Media tools - computers, digital cameras and sound recorders - can help your child discover that, as great as it is to be entertained and enjoy somebody else's version of fun, it's even better to enjoy fun that is entirely of her making.
Through the process of making her own productions, your child will begin to appreciate that TV shows, video games and movies do not simply appear. People make them. As a result, her hands-on production experience will influence the way she sees, listens to and plays with media made by other people, allowing her to ask questions about how they were made and why. It also will help her discover that she can be more than a consumer: she can be a Web developer, a digital artist, an online storyteller, a game designer, a composer, a filmmaker or just about any other kind of creator she wants to be.

The Problem
Reports indicate that children as young as 5 years old are becoming concerned, even obsessed, with their weight and shape. Indeed, eating disorders and significantly disordered eating attitudes and behaviors are appearing in pre-teens and teens at an increasing rate. At the same time obesity rates for these age-groups are up. An estimated 1 in 5 children is considered overweight, with obesity being the No 1. health problem among America's kids. What are the causes of increased eating disorders and obesity?
Technically, we don't know, although some of the contributory causes seem pretty obvious.
  • Increased exposure to TV commercials
Children are exposed to more commercials for junk food and more 'super-thin' images and characters. They are being encouraged to eat high fat food and be thin - both at the same time!

KIDS' DAY...
KIDS' DAY by Deborah Claire . While camping in the mountains with her parents and three brothers Diana meets a witch who grants her wish that adults stop working and start playing. At first, it’s great! Mom and Dad are off their cell phones and totally involved with their kids. Okay, so there’s no TV, but is that really a problem when videos can be had for the taking? In fact, anything can be had for the taking; that green stuff is just play money! The trouble begins when people start fighting over toys and ice cream in the mall, and escalates to a complete shutdown of electricity, water, medical care, and food supplies. The kids finally decide that people really do have to work, and head out to the mountains to set things right. But when it does happen, the results are unexpected. While adults play, all the services provided by the community fall apart. Kids might think that it would be fun to get rid of money and never have a bedtime, to use school books as building blocks, and dance in the hallways, but the actual experience is a mind-opener. Especially when Penny's grandma gets sick and there's no one to care for her, and when smaller kids are being chased by bullies and there's no protection anywhere.

It must be August. Parents are with their kids shopping for school supplies. The National Retail Federation says families will spend about $450 on back to school shopping. Department stores now have lists that tell parents everything their kids need to fill up their backpacks. That list includes notebooks. Kids also need their pencils. But believe it or not, some parents are including phones, although Shannan Cassidy from Iowa City is not one of them. She said, "It's an accessory like 50 lip glosses and 10 necklaces." Cassidy will not buy a phone for her 9-year-old. Neither will Ann Garmager from Coralville who has an 11-year-old daughter. Garmager said, "I think 11 is a little too young to have a cell phone." But companies see nine- to 13-year-olds as an untapped market for cell phone use. How else do you explain the Firefly Mobile phone? Target electronics employee Jordan Matzger said, "It's geared more toward the tweens." The phone has only five buttons and no numbers. Target manager Amy McFarlane said, "Parents program the phone book using a pin and can add up to 20 numbers."

Because Life Goes On...Helping Children and Youth Live With Separation and Divorce
Introduction
"How will this affect the kids?" is one of the first questions that goes through the mind of every parent facing the end of a relationship. The answers are as diverse as children themselves. Every child reacts to separation or divorce in his or her own way. But even though every child is unique, there are needs and feelings that most children share. This booklet will help you understand those common reactions. With this knowledge, you will be better prepared to help your children cope, adapt and move forward. We all know that divorce is tough on kids, both during and afterwards. But how you handle the separation and divorce can make a huge difference in how well your children adapt. Studies in child development and psychology show that children and youth adapt better if you:
  • try to anticipate and understand your children's feelings, and do your best to help them feel safe, loved and secure

AboutOurKids Related Articles Introduction Your summer plans for your children are probably already in place. Your kids may be scheduled to participate in recreational activities sponsored by your school or town, you may have them enrolled in day camp programs or educational activities, and some of you are sending the children away for camp or teen tours. Although it appears that everything is all set, it's a good idea to take a few more steps to help prepare your children for their experiences. Summer usually means more freedom for children and usually less adult supervision than that encountered during the school year. It also sometimes means a lot less contact with you, so you need to make sure that your voice and support have been provided to make your child's experience fun, rewarding, safe, and healthy. The Cellar Main Parenting PDA View Full Version : Books for kids 01-03-2005, 11:18 PM I was reminded of the Henry and Mudge books in another thread which got me to thinking about kids books in general. One that I really liked reading to the kids was Heckedy Peg. It has the charm of a very old story, but it's recent. The illustrations are wonderful. Very fun to read aloud. Beestie 01-04-2005, 12:56 PM I just read up on this book and it looks like my kids (4 and 5) would really like it. I'm going to get a copy from the library and read it to them. I've been looking for a book like this to read to them. They are not 100% ready for Harry Potter besides, this book has, apparently, some great illustrations whereas Harry Potter doesn't have any. Kitsune 01-04-2005, 12:57 PM I recommend the classic A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein, How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell, and Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman and Diana Souza.
What's in common with these? :) elf 01-04-2005, 01:17 PM That looks like a good one. . . sometimes I wish for those story-reading days again... but then I come to my senses. I read Where the Wild Things Are about four thousand times. Oh. My. God, my boy-child loved this book.
I can still (and it's been some five years or so...) recite the damned thing word-for-word...

Kids like to be empowered when choosing the foods and beverages they consume. Kids today want more out of everything, including food. More for most kids is not necessarily quantity or even quality. It’s visual and emotional appeal. Kids are drawn to products that are attractively packaged and aggressively marketed. Because today’s on-the-go lifestyles allow kids early, and many times unguided, access to more convenient foods and beverages, kids do not always make the most nutritious choices. Healthful foods have historically been under-marketed to kids, or simply not marketed. It’s not just at school, but also at home and everywhere in between, especially for kids with pocket money. This eating and drinking environment is one of the factors contributing to the epidemic of overweight and obese children in the United States.

TALKING WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT SEXUALITY We live in a very sexual world. Messages about sex abound on radio and TV, in movies, magazines, and music. Sex is used to sell everything from soap to sports cars. Political and religious leaders have a lot to say about sex, too -so do people in locker rooms, in malls, and in our own homes. Our kids hear it all, and a lot of it is not useful. Many kids become confused and may be pressured into sexual intercourse before they are ready. Too often their lives are shaped by sexual abuse, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancy. We know how important it is for our children to have healthy sexual values and boundaries and we all know that if we want them to have good information we need to give it to them. But for many of us it's hard to talk about sex especially with our own children. There are a few key points to remember: 1. There is no such thing as giving your teen too much information. Kids make better decisions about their sexuality when they have all the information they need and when they feel free to talk about sex at home. Remember, information does not encourage kids to be sexually active. Teens who understand their sexuality are better able to be sexually responsible and have loving relationships.

Monday :: January 10, 2005 Ten Pre-Teens Strip-Searched in Texas Ok, this is carrying the law and order thing way too far. Charter school officials in Texas strip-searched ten 11 and 12 year olds , "down to their underwear," looking for a ten dollar bill another student reported missing. Can you imagine if it were drugs they were looking for? Cavity searches, for sure. This wasn't even in a backwater town. It was 40 miles from Houston. [link via Last One Speaks Civil Liberties

South African Children Learning about Disability: Media Review of SOUL Buddyz
    By Barbara Kolucki ( bakoluck@aol.com
SOUL Buddyz is a very popular radio and television programme for South African children. It is designed to help children, pre-teens and adolescents, their parents and other caregivers, to deal with everyday problems. It has involved the target audience from the onset - asking children from around the country what their problems are, what they wanted information about and their specific requests regarding what they could do together to help solve some of these problems.
I have heard about this series for some time now and recently read that the program had great success with one particular feature about a child who is disabled. Following is a review of some of the "gems" in the package of sample programs and a resource guide I received.
One of the regular cast members is David Meyer who plays Jerome in the television series. He uses a wheelchair, is a great basketball player and simply one of the fabulous team of 9 kids. These kids range from poor to rich, black to white or brown and living in a variety of "home" situations. In the print material for children and parents, "Jerome" introduces the topic of disability.
    Resource Guide
I absolutely love the print material. It is very user-friendly, interactive and like a popular magazine for older children. I received a copy of the resource guide for Grade 7 - I assume this means that there is a Guide for several Classes, but an overview brochure was not included in the package.
