Einstein’s Miracle Year (February 18, 2005, Hour Two) Program Summary Guests Books/Articles Related Links and Resources ... show information Program Summary In the world of physics, 1905 is called the “Miracle Year” because that’s when Albert Einstein published his breakthrough theory special relativity and other ideas that pushed our understanding of the universe forward by leaps and bounds.  The next ten years of his life saw a continuous flow of startling new concepts of time, space, and gravity that defined the structure and mechanics of the cosmos – the speed of light, curved space, black holes, gravitational waves, atomic energy – and led to some of the most amazing inventions and technologies of the 20 th century. 2005 has been declared the World Year of Physics; to kick it off, Ira and his guests discuss those remarkable ten years and the 100 years since then – predictions that proved accurate, the gap between relativity and quantum mechanics, the countless attempts to prove Einstein wrong, and the latest efforts to test more of  hypotheses. Guests Rolf Sinclair, retired program officer in the division of physics of the National Science Foundation; senior scientific advisor for the Centro de Estudios Científicos in Valdivia, Chile

Ehrenfest) taught me for the first time to distrust complicated mathematics and formalisms that were then very popular in Göttingen. He loved to ask, and encourage others to ask, 'stupid' questions; he refused to admit that something is understood if one understands only the mathematical derivation. He showed me how to get at the real physics, how to distinguish between physics and formalism, how to get at the depth of things: 'Physics is simple, but subtle,' he used to say. The older I get, the more aware I am of his influences."
