Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit "Working for a healthier tomorrow" Smoking and Tobacco New! Take the Tobacco Why Test Have you ever thought about what is in a puff of cigarette smoke, or what it does to your mind and body? If you are a smoker, or are thinking about starting, you should consider the following facts. It takes just seven seconds for inhaled cigarette smoke to travel into the lungs and bloodstream and then directly to the brain. Once there, nicotine from the smoke triggers many responses in the body. It affects mood, alertness, concentration and performance. Inhaling just one cigarette speeds up the heartbeat, increases blood pressure, upsets the flow of blood and air in the lungs and causes a drop in the temperature of fingers and toes. Smokers become addicted to nicotine and crave the "buzz" effect they get from it. Smokers also develop a tolerance to nicotine, which means they need more of it to get the same effect. Eventually, they reach the number of cigarettes they need to smoke to keep them satisfied. This is how smokers get hooked. It becomes a vicious cycle. They need more cigarettes to give them that good feeling. They think smoking helps relieve stress when really it is the desire for cigarettes that creates most of the stress. Smoking is also stressful on the body. In fact, it is such a strain that every cigarette smoked shortens a person's life by five minutes!

A girl carrying buckets of water in Myanmar. Water, sanitation and health
Poor sanitation, unsafe water and unhygienic environments cause millions of children in the developing world to suffer needlessly from disease. Water- and sanitation-related disease, despite being preventable, remains one of the most significant child health problems worldwide. Diarrhoeal diseases are amongst the most serious of these diseases, alone killing 1.8 million children every year. Children in developing countries typically have four to five bouts of diarrhoea a year. Even when they don’t kill, these diarrhoea episodes can physically and mentally stunt children, affecting them for the rest of their lives. By lowering immunity levels, diarrhoea increases mortality rates from other opportunistic diseases, especially respiratory infections. "Sanitation is more important than independence." — Gandhi
