Good practice with decimals and fractions, and good training in remembering what's behind the covered squares. Don't overlook those hardy survivors growing right outside the door, in roadside meadows, and other wild places. They are integral to a healthy ecosystem! After all, butterflies, birds, and a host of other wildlife thrive in partnership with native plants (those that were here long before Europeans arrived). In fact, they depend on them for survival, and so do we. Many of our foods, medicines, and even products such as shampoo and baseball bats, are derived from indigenous plants. Why Go Wild?

Kids Gardening Resources
There is a growing (no pun intended) number of web sites especially for kids, and of particular interest are sites dedicated to gardening with children. Gardeners and horticulturists have intuitively known for a long time that kids love to garden, and gardening develops children in many different ways. They learn the rhythms of nature, the character-building virtues of patience, responsibility, sharing, acceptance of loss, experience the joys of seeing planted seeds and bulbs sprout and eventually bloom, and many others. Gardening offers a vehicle to teach many things including: science, botany, ethnobotany, language, history, recycling (composting), math (calculating volumes, numbers of plants or seeds, weights, areas, etc.), agriculture, entomology, plant pathology, soils, and lots more. As any gardener knows, cultivating plants is relaxing, exciting, and interesting! Recently, studies have been undertaken to scientifically verify what we have known all along - that gardening is good for you. This area of Gardening in the East Texas Piney Woods is dedicated to helping folks and kids tap into resources on the web to make the most of gardening experiences for kids.

September 22, 2005 - Understanding Evolution - your one-stop choice for information on evolution
The University of California Museum of Paleontology has created this dynamic site on evolution. With newspaper-style format, the site contains living examples of selection that underscore the predictive value of evolutionary theory, for example antibiotic resistance in bacteria, selection in everyday life and modern thought about the relationships of all organisms. It is an excellent resource for "K-16 teachers, with lesson plans, nuts-and-bolts knowledge, classroom strategies and more." Without using evolution ideas, response to disease spread and epidemics would be severely impaired. This is not a site of belief or non-belief but science. (****) -SR
