Mathematics Standards for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2. ERIC Digest.
Concern about the mathematics achievement of America's youth has reached a new level. It is clear in this increasingly technological and global society that achievement in mathematics will have a major impact on students' "career aspirations, their role in society, and even their sense of personal fulfillment" (Malcom, 1999). This high level of concern has resulted in a growing appreciation for the impact that early mathematics learning could have on the life course of young children. Traditionally, mathematics has received little attention in preschools and in many K-2 classrooms (Johnson, 1999). This situation is changing as mathematics learning is recognized as critical to school success. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 2000) recently published Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, building on its 1989 Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. The current version includes pre-kindergarten standards for the first time and outlines the mathematics that children should learn as they progress through school. While some observers question the appropriateness of any standards for this age group, other critics argue that the current standards may be less develop-mentally appropriate than the previous standards, moving in the direction of content knowledge and product orientation. This Digest discusses the latest mathematics standards for young children and how teachers can use developmentally appropriate practices to help children meet these standards.

    Escalating Kindergarten Curriculum. ERIC Digest.
The practice of kindergarten retention is increasing dramatically. In some districts, as many as 60% of kindergartners are judged to be unready for first grade. These children are provided with alternative programming: developmental kindergarten (followed by regular kindergarten), transition or pre-first grade, or the repeating of kindergarten. An extra year before first grade is intended to protect unready children from entering too soon into a demanding academic environment where, it is thought, they will almost surely experience failure. The extra year is meant to be a time when immature children can grow and develop learning readiness skills, and children with deficient prereading skills can strengthen them. When parents are asked to agree to retention or transition placement, they are often told that with an extra year to grow, their children will move to the top of their classes and become leaders. Advocates of kindergarten retention are undoubtedly well-intentioned. They see retention as a way for the school to respond to children's enormous differences in background, developmental stages, and aptitude. They view retention as a means of preventing failure before it occurs.

In 1998 I created the first one "Early Literacy", inspired by my friend and colleague, Terry Starko, and by the 2learn team. • The foundation of education is built in the Kindergarten. The Kindergarten has children aged 3 to 7, corresponding to preschool, Junior and Senior Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2. The group sizes have a maximum of 8 to 12 children (depending on age). All Kindergarten groups are in one large room to facilitate regular interaction among the children including: Opening Circle, Games Circle, choir, Partner Play and outdoor recess. The Froebel Gifts and Occupations are used in many ways. Guided play is used to draw out the child's creative self-activity. Children take initiative and pursue their dreams with creativity and self-discipline. Older kindergarten children are enthusiastic readers, have solid mathematic capabilities and take pleasure in their spelling words and science experiments.
