2004 Neuroscience for Kids
Writing Contest The results of the Neuroscience for Kids Writing Contest are in! We received 615 poems from students in kindergarten though grade 12. These poems came from 31 states and seven countries. From the United States, poems arrived from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. From outside the United States, students sent poems from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Pakistan and Germany. To judge the contest, Dr. Eric Chudler read all 615 poems and selected finalists from each grade category (Kindergarten-Grade 2; Grade 3-Grade 5; Grade 6-Grade 8; Grade 9-12). Fourteen judges (neuroscientists, teachers, University of Washington staff) read these selected poems and chose up to 10 of their favorites. The judges' scores were then tallied and the poems that received the most votes were declared winners. Below is a list of the winners and a few samples of their poems. Winners were awarded a book or poster related to neuroscience.

God Made Our World Teacher's Guide - this is just one possible lesson plan. Visit the Creation Section for further ideas (including a snack recipe) to supplement this or purchased plans.
Introduction:
Why is the sky blue? Where do babies come from? Why do dogs bark? These are all questions that every young child asks. Preschool thru Grade School children are constantly discovering God's creations as they explore the natural world. And we can help them discover the loving creator God who made it all. In the beginning, there were no blue skies, no cuddly babies or barking dogs. There was nothing at all. But then God began to create. God spoke and out of nothing came the sun, the moon, the earth, the mountains, the valleys, the plants and the animals. God's loving hands created everything around us.
The message: God made our world.
Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. Send the Creation Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to reiterate the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator. Suggestion: One viewer suggested creating a small 8 1/2 x 11 inch frame using a piece of construction paper as matting. Cut 2 inch strips of cardboard (old cereal boxes work well!). Glue the strips around the outside of the construction paper as a frame. Allow the children to paint, rubber stamp or use stickers to cover the frame. Put two brass tabs through the construction paper. Each week, when the children bring home and complete their Take Home sheet they can add it to their frame. The brass tacks allow you to pile the sheets together to look at over and over again (and they save fridge space!)

Kindergarten or 'kindergrind'? School getting tougher for kids
Critics say pressure is too much; backers say preparation needed
By Helen Gao
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER April 11, 2005 Kindergarten is no longer about doing kid stuff. While the blocks, crayons and puzzles remain part of school, these childhood staples are a side dish on a full menu of academic activities that take youngsters far beyond the ABCs. The emphasis on reading, writing and arithmetic is seen countywide, from San Diego to Poway, and nationwide, from Seattle to Detroit. As kindergarten evolved from a cocoon for social and emotional development to a rigorous classroom environment, a national debate has emerged: How much should children be expected to learn when they are 4, 5 and 6 years old?
RONI GALGANO / Union-Tribune Leslie Falconer said she wants her students to have fun while they learn about reading and writing. Falconer, a member of the Kindergarten Leadership Committee, read to her class last month at Ericson Elementary School in Mira Mesa.

http://www.cfc-efc.ca/docs/mnet/00001141.htm
An activity guide for children, 5 to 11 years of age. Objective To introduce children to the ways in which packaging is designed to attract kids. Children will learn:
  • awareness of the techniques used by advertisers to sell food products. beginning awareness of how they are affected by these techniques. an understanding that products may be similar, despite differences in packaging. an understanding of nutritional labelling on packages.
  • Preparation and Materials
  • Have the children each bring in empty food packages. Create "mystery products" by covering the brand names on several well-known food packages. Bring in a few sets of similar products, some name-brands, and one that is either a "store" brand product or from the "bulk foods" department.
  • The Lesson Guided Discussion: Packaging Explain to the children that advertisements are just one way to get a customer's attention. Another way is the packaging.
  • A good strategy in helping the children understand the importance of packaging is to have them imagine (or act out) a grocery store shelf with each product vying for the customer's attention. Have them imagine what they might do to make the customer choose them, and not the "product" next to them. Manufacturers might feature cartoon characters or famous people on the front of the package.
