with Milenna Russell Safety Tips For Cooking With Kids Kids love to help mom with everything, including cooking and baking. The kitchen can be dangerous with children underfoot if you are not paying attention or taking the proper safety precautions. Letting your children help you make treats or cook a meal can be fun for both of you, if you follow proper procedures. But, if you do not, then the cooking experience can turn into a disaster. Some things you need to remember when cooking with small children are:
  • Keep children away from hot surfaces-don't let children around the oven or stove
Turn the handles of pots and pans away from the edge-keeping them away from little hands reaching up to grab
Use stove shields and other safety equipment for your kitchen appliances
Never leave your child unattended in the kitchen
Don't let them stand on chairs unless you are supervising them and they are helping you make something
Do not let children handle sharp objects-if there is cutting involved make sure an adult prepares that part of the meal
Have kids wash hands and pull back hair-teach them proper sanitary procedures
Children love to be "mommy's helper." You can teach your children the proper way to cook and the right kitchen etiquette by being a good example and doing things right. If you make the kitchen a safe place then you can create a fun atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.

Cut a corner of the bag to pour batter out. Think beyond sprinkles. Let your child place gummy bears, animal crackers, peanut brittle, and other fanciful treats on the cake. Use food coloring to teach about colors. If making orange, let your child add the yellow and red drops to the bowl, then stir until the mixture becomes the desired color. Cut fun shapes out of a sheet cake using cookie cutters. Turn zip-sealed plastic bags into a pastry bag. Cut a tiny corner off to let just enough icing flow so kids can write on their cakes

Necessary equipment: Bowls and spoons of assorted sizes to see which pair make the most comfortable fit for each little chef. Tips and tricks:
  • Stirring seems simple but how you hold a mixing spoon or a whisk will either make it easy or make a mess. Ask your kids to try different holds and see which way feels steadiest for them.
Culinary goal: To be able to successfully combine ingredients together in a bowl or pot using a spoon or other utensil. 1.The basics: Although it seems like second nature to adults in a kitchen, many kids find even the simple act of combining different ingredients in a bowl fun and exciting. It's one of the easiest ways to "cook" something in the kitchen and still be rewarded with delicious results. Why not try tossing together a simple fruit salad to start? Recipe to try: Fruit Salad 2. "Combining well": Recipe to try: Signature Homemade Carrot Cake 3. Step-by-step combining: Sometimes you need to combine different sets of ingredients at different times because some items mix better than others, i.e., liquids with liquids and dry ingredients with dry ingredients. Try out the principle by making a green salad with lots of different veggies and a creamy ranch dressing. Toss everything together and imagine what would happen if you started with everything in one bowl!

BellaOnline's Cooking for Kids Editor Cooking with Kids OK, I'll admit it. I really struggle with trying to things done in the kitchen and get dinner on the table. And having little helpers under feet can be even more of a challenge—especially when faced with a deadline or when everyone in the family is running this way and that.
I’ve found a few tips which have helped me and thought I’d pass them along to you. Let me know what you think and if you’ve discovered additional ways to keep our little kitchen helpers happy…and busy!

Jul. 25, 2005 12:00 AM The Volunteer Center of Maricopa County is "Cooking up Happiness" at area homeless shelters.
Nearly 30 kids from La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter in Mesa have participated in the weeklong nutrition project, which included touring a farm, planting seeds, cooking meals and compiling recipe books.
The project was the brainchild of the volunteer center's Youth Volunteer Corps. The group spent the week mentoring La Mesita's kids as they learned how to chop vegetables, set the table and cook nutritious meals. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
"Our whole idea was to give kids the opportunity to learn about nutrition and how to cook delicious food without much difficulty and expense," said Melinda Wing, the corps' team leader.
La Mesita's children learned about healthy food from the ground up, beginning with a day at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek. After watching seed-planting activity at the farm, the youths and their teen mentors planted their own vegetable seeds. The rest of the week included a day in the classroom learning about nutrition, two days cooking and the final day making recipe books.
