Bellwether Gallery of St. Louis Artists
Phillip Hampton, Moodside Horizons, 1985, watercolor and acrylic on Arches paper. Courtesy of Brenda and James Rivers. A Celebration of Vision: The Art of Phillip Hampton
September 24 – December 3, 2005 A passionate experimentalist, African American artist Phillip J. Hampton has investigated aesthetic problems and explored the effects and conditions of a variety of media for over 60 years. The exhibition celebrates Phillip Hampton’s career with a selection of over 35 drawings and paintings from the 1950s to today. With roots in social realism, Hampton moved into abstraction in the 1970s. Informed by his studies of art history, he has applied a variety of aesthetic philosophies to his works including techniques of European Old Master painters, traditional African art, and the unique spatial qualities of Asian art. Utilizing a complex palette of media including watercolor, acrylic, oils, pastel and collage, Hampton experiments with techniques and ideas from the history of art, while elucidating African and African American histories and culture through abstraction and symbol-making. In his early years, Hampton's concerns centered on the urban landscape and the human form. These paintings were a fusion of realism and expressionism. While deeply rooted in the realist approaches that artists like Henry Ossawa Tanner, Thomas Hart Benton and Hale Woodruff, among others, applied in their works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hampton's paintings also exhibited an affinity with German Expressionist and Fauve artists like Karl Schmidt-Rottluff or Maurice de Vlaminck in their angular formal arrangements and dynamic compositions.

Artworks: Launch of a national debate
Tate Modern, Thursday 30 June 2005
Newsflash - information only
The event is being organised in association with NESTA, Tate and Demos, and with media partners The Times Educational Supplement and Channel 4.
Since Artworks was launched in 2000, a number of questions have arisen - or have resurfaced - relating to the status of children's art: how it is taught; how it is influenced by artists and galleries; how it has itself influenced artists; and why it is so rarely displayed outside of schools. The 30 June event will address these and other related issues, with presentations by a number of eminent speakers, and with attendance (by invitation only) by a select group of artists, educators, curators, gallery directors and academics. Guests will be active participants in the day, and will be given an opportunity to see just how good children's art can be.
The event will be filmed, and the findings will appear in a Demos/Artworks publication. If you would be interested in receiving a copy or copies of this publication - or if you have any queries, or would like further information about the event - please contact Artworks by email: artworks@cloreduffield.org.uk

Janet Turner Print Museum at
California State University, Chico
Where are we : The museum gallery is located on the mezzanine floor of the historic Laxson Auditorium, 1st and Salem Streets. Additional prints are also on display in the Ayres Hall first floor cases, which is located directly behind the auditorium.
About the museum
The museum was established in 1981 with an initial generous gift of over 2,000 prints from the late CSU, Chico faculty member Dr. Janet Turner. Turner, an internationally known printmaker and educator, felt students should have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by original art.
The Print Museum is a program in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and has strong links to the Department of Art and Art History. Additional support come from its university/community based Board of Directors. A summer Children's Art Academy is one of the newer institutional program collaborations. Donations are tax deductible and gratefully received.
The museum's curated exhibitions from the collection serve the campus and surrounding communities and are open at no charge. In addition to collection exhibitions the Friends of the Turner sponsor a national biennial print competition and exhibition and current student work is celebrated in a juried exhibition at the end of the spring semester
