Shh!), but these frames invite kids to draw, paint and create whenever inspiration strikes. This setup is best for kids who have learned to draw within the space allotted to them and know how to use different materialsgenerally kids ages five and up. The drawing-, cork- and marker boards below are mounted on corrugated cardboard and hung on the wall, but for a more permanent installation (say, in a child's bedroom), you could attach the materials and paint the frames directly on the wall. Ironically, this is one of the simplest designs for the artistically uninclined to execute. All you need to make are squares. CHALKBOARD Paint a chalkboard rectangle onto the wall, then tape or glue on a corrugated cardboard frame. For an even simpler display, you can also just hang a store-bought chalkboard onto the wall.

Theoretically, kids’ minds should be open to anything you introduce them to; you’d expect a preschooler, with no background in art criticism, to be uncritical and generally turned on by all new things. But in practice, a child of four or older will say, "Yucky," or "Ug-ly," or "I hate it," to paintings and sculptures, just as he does to the new foods he tasted. We continue to make these same judgments throughout our lives, sometimes because they are in fact Yucky. Some types of art are more immediately appealing to preschoolers than others.
