    Alternative forms of exercise such as martial arts becoming popular.
    Punching. Kicking. Leaping. Shouting.
    These are things typically associated with events sponsored by the World Wrestling Federation.
    But they are also keys to staying physically fit if you are a martial artist.
    While martial artists are often portrayed in the movies as lean, mean fighting machines, the study of martial arts is more than being able to fight and defend yourself. Most martial arts studies require students to stretch and condition their bodies before any techniques or sparring (fighting) is done in a class. "You use all the parts of your body. Learning the mechanics of martial arts involves using all of your body. I think that is what people don't understand," said Alan Chinowsky, a third degree black belt in Okinawan karate and owner of East-West Karate in Tahoe City. Nancy Bouffiou, a first degree blackbelt and owner of Universal Taekwondo Federation in Truckee agrees.

For some, lifting weights at the gym is the thing. For others, it's group exercises. If you're one of those who like kickboxing, there's a program with a new twist that could be just what you're looking for. It's called Turbo Kick. "This is a level that's different from the old kickboxing," said Romane Roman, a fan of Turbo Kick. "For people who come to the gym all the time like I do, it's different from spinning, it's different from yoga. It's just something different." The class Roman is so excited about is offered at The Fitness Experience Health Club in Scottsdale. In one hour, the Turbo Kick class combines kickboxing with choreographed dance moves and a tai chi-like cool down. "When they come in, we go over basic format and technique, the terminology, punches and jabs and what not," explained Turbo Kick master trainer Geeny Hull. "Then we go through the sequence of punches, jabs, kicks and everything, and then we'll just take them through the exercise.

    Although the range of benefits is impressive, cardio kickboxing also poses considerable risk of injury, particularly for new exercisers or participants who don't know how to protect themselves from the potential dangers. Even very fit exercisers can be challenged by their first class. Cardio kickboxing is a complicated form of exercise because the range and planes of motion differ from what most people are used to, says Los Angeles, California, instructor Keli Roberts, who recently choreographed Kathy Smith's kickboxing video. Roberts notes that traditional martial arts training builds progressively; students learn each new move gradually, giving their bodies time to develop the ability to perform all moves safely and correctly. Moves are not done repetitively to fast music, as they generally are in cardio kickboxing classes. In your first cardio kickboxing class, you could find yourself performing advanced moves, such as fan and hook kicks, even though you wouldn't do these in a martial arts class until you had progressed through several belt colors, says Roberts. Kicks like these produce explosive forces on the lower back and other joints. The punches and jabs taught in these classes can cause problems for the elbows, neck and shoulders. Unless you progressively develop the necessary strength and stability to perform these moves with good form, you will be at risk for injury.
