The migration from the Nile Valley
The Maasai are the southernmost of the Nilotic-speaking peoples, and are linguistically and well as physically related to the Samburu, Turkana and Kalenjin, among others.
Their distant history is unknown beyond a wealth of unsubstantiated conjecture and dreams proposed by often romantically-minded Western scholars. Some say that they are one of the lost tribes of Israel. Others that they came from North Africa. Still others believe that they are the living remnants of Egyptian civilisation, primarily, it seems, on account of their warriors' braided hairstyles. Suffice to say that if any of these theories have any truth, it would be just as likely that the ancient cultures of Egypt and Israel were influenced by the Maasai's ancestors, rather than the other way around.
What is
The Maasai eventually entered Kenya to the west of Lake Turkana, and quickly spread south through the Rift Valley, whose fertile grasslands were ideal for their cattle. They reached their present-day territories in Kenya and Tanzania around the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries.

Jomo Kenyatta:
The Kenya Africa Union is Not the Mau Mau
Speech at the Kenya African Union Meeting at Nyeri, July 26, 1952 Mau Mau is not truthful. We do not know this thing Mau Mau. We want to prosper as a nation, and as a nation we demand equality, that is equal pay for equal work. Whether it is a chief, headman or labourer be needs in these days increased salary. He needs a salary that compares with a salary of a European who does equal work. We will never get our freedom unless we succeed in this issue. We do not want equal pay for equal work tomorrow-we want it right now. Those who profess to be just must realize that this is the foundation of justice. It has never been known in history that a country prospers without equality. We despise bribery and corruption, those two words that the European repeatedly refers to. Bribery and corruption is prevalent in this country, but I am not surprised. As long as a people are held down, corruption is sure to rise and the only answer to this is a policy of equality. If we work together as one, we must succeed. Our country today is in a bad state for its land is full of fools-and fools in a country delay the independence of its people. K.A.U. seeks to remedy this situation and I tell you now it despises thieving, robbery and murder for these practices ruin our country. I say this because if one man steals, or two men steal, there are people sitting close by lapping up information, who say the whole tribe is bad because a theft has been committed. Those people are wrecking our chances of advancement. They will prevent us getting freedom. If I have my own way, let me tell you I would butcher the criminal, and there are more criminals than one in more senses than one. The policeman must arrest an offender, a man who is purely an offender, but lie must not go about picking up people with a small horn of liquor in their hands and march them in procession with his fellow policemen to Government and say he has got a

Hundreds of armed men surrounded a primary school and nearby houses and opened fire as children were making their way to school early on Tuesday. Security forces say 76 people - including 22 children - died in the revenge attack by raiders feuding over water and pastures. One mother watched as gunmen killed her two children and beheaded her husband. "I appeal for calm as the government embarks on a security operation to track down the perpetrators of the attack," Mr Kibaki said. The situation is very sad on the ground, everybody is mourning the dead

Tuesday's raid in Turbi village - populated by the Gabra clan - is blamed on the rival Borana from Ethiopia. The two groups have feuded over water and pasture in the semi-arid region.

Kenya: a political history

Thousands of Kikuyu were killed by the British in the 1950s Basic Facts
  • Population: 29 million
  • Capital: Nairobi
  • Language: The official language is Kiswahili, and English, Kikuyu and Luo are also widely spoken
  • Religion: Most of the population follow traditional beliefs. There is a fairly large Christian community, and a smaller Muslim community.
Recent History Kenya was a British colony until 12 December 1963. In 1944 the first national African organistion was formed, the Kenya African Union (KAU). This gained the support of the Kikuyu, which is the largest ethnic group in Kenya. The Mau Mau was a mainly Kikuyu secret society, headed by Jomo Kenyatta. It launched a terrorist campaign aimed at expelling European influence from the country in 1952. The British authorities reacted brutally, killing an estimated 13,500 Africans and herding a further 100,000 into detention camps. Britain declared a state of emergency in October 1952 and banned the KAU in 1953. The terrorist attacks ended in 1956 and the state of emergency was ended in 1960. A new African elite replaces the colonialists General Elections were held in May 1963, and in June 1963 Kenya was granted internal self government. Kenya gained independence on 12 December 1963. It became a Republic on 12 December 1964.

Background:
Revered president and liberation struggle icon Jomo KENYATTA led Kenya from independence until his death in 1978, when 2nd President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession.
The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. MOI acceded to internal and external pressure for political liberalization in late 1991. The ethnically fractured opposition failed to dislodge KANU from power in elections in 1992 and 1997, which were marred by violence and fraud, but are viewed as having generally reflected the will of the Kenyan people. President MOI stepped down in December of 2002 following fair and peaceful elections. Mwai KIBAKI, running as the candidate of the multiethnic, united opposition group, the National Rainbow Coalition, defeated KANU candidate Uhuru KENYATTA and assumed the presidency following a campaign centered on an anticorruption platform.

Danes muzzle Kenya over land policies

afrol News
- Denmark's aid to Kenya worth euro 20 million is being withheld as the Nairobi government is accusing a Danish organisation of undermining its land policy and fuelling violence. In Denmark, the press and organisations focus on Kenya's ruling elite and their large properties as the relations between Copenhagen and Nairobi are getting sour. Read more "2 million Kenyans at risk of starvation" afrol News - According to the World Food Programme (WFP), chronic drought now "places 2 million Kenyans at risk of starvation." Even though parts of Kenya have seen patchy rainfall in recent months, a devastating, years-long drought means that there is still a chance that 2 million people may starve without food assistance through August, WFP said. Mount Kenya, at 5199 m, is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at 5895 m is the highest. The central twin peaks, Batian (5199 m) and Nelion (5188 m) can only be accessed by climbing, whereas the third highest peak, Point Lenana (4985 m) can usually be ascended by a suitably equipped walker. The mountain was gazetted a National Park in 1949.
When you visit Mount Kenya, you visit an absolutely unique environment. It is actually so unique that it has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The high altitude equatorial environment has led to the evolution of several specially adapted species of plants, animals and birds. In the 700 square kilometre park are 81 plant species found only on Mt. Kenya, as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
GEOLOGY
Mount Kenya is an extinct volcano, 50 km in diameter at the base, that was built up by intermittent volcanic eruptions 3.1 to 2.6 million years ago. What remains now as the central peaks was the core of the volcano, all the crater rim having been eroded away. Originally the summit of Mount Kenya must have reached well over 6,500 metres.
Lying only 20 km from the equator, there are nevertheless numerous glaciers because of the high altitude climate, although these all have receded significantly in the past two decades
