Kenya History and Culture
History Kenya's present population of more than 27 million is the result of incursions and migrations of differing groups over the past 1,500 years. For visitors, this striking cultural mix is one of the pleasures of visiting the country. For Kenyans, it has, in the past, presented some problems as various groups vied for power and territory. Culture There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average African may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, tribe is still the most important part of a person's identity.

Before the coming of the white man, land was the most important possession in Kenya - " . . . the land is the source of all livelihood" (Oginga Odinga, former Kenyan vice president). Land meant freedom, and land became the focal point of the struggle between white settlers and indigenous Africans. Kenya, the second program in the three-part series No Easy Walk, traces the sociopolitical history of that East African nation from the arrival of the first colonialists in the late 19th century through independence in 1963. While not as vibrant as the other programs, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, the production nevertheless succeeds at portraying the evolution of resistance from peaceful protest to armed confrontation.

Kenya From independence in 1963 until elections in 2002 Kenya had two Presidents, Jomo Kenyatta (Kikuyu tribe) and Daniel arap Moi (Kalenjin). President Moi held office from when Kenyatta died in 1978 until December 2002. Kenya became a one-party state dominated by KANU from 1978. In 1992 multi party democracy was restored but the Kenyan political environment remained turbulent. KANU won the 1992 and 1997 general elections against a divided opposition. At the December 1997 elections, President Moi won with 41% of the presidential vote. KANU were returned with a reduced majority, taking 113 of the 222 parliamentary seats. Election observers noted shortcomings in the electoral process and some irregularities, but concluded that on the whole the results did reflect the wishes of Kenyan voters. The opposition parties accepted the parliamentary results, with reservations. On 6 September 1999, a Cabinet reshuffle resulted in the number of Ministries being reduced from 27 to 15, although there was no reduction in the size of the Cabinet.

Nature Kenya and EANHS - A history The Beginning A small group of scientists and amateur scientists met in Nairobi in 1909 and formed the "East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society". The Society's objective was to promote the study of natural history animals, plants and their environment. In those days, the study of natural history often meant collecting animals and plants. From the collections, species could be identified and distribution mapped. In 1910, the members of the EANHS rented a room to store their collections; this was the first Museum. As EANHS members gathered information, there was need to disseminate it. In 1910 the first Journal of the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society was published. As the Journal of East African Natural History, published jointly by the Museum and the Society, it is now distributed all over the world.

Kenya was the location of some of the earliest human settlements. Sites such as Koobi Fora, near Lake Turkana, indicate hominid habitation dating back 2.5 million years. This process of migration occurred through small population movements and interactions and stretched over a period of centuries. From this process emerged the various social formations that existed in Kenya at the beginning of colonial rule in the late 19th century ad. These groupings were fluid, representing a process of ongoing social change. For example, in the 17th century the ancestors of the Bantu-speaking Kikuyu settled in the forested hills and ridges south and west of Mount Kenya; as they did so, they borrowed customs from some peoples, absorbed other peoples, and competed with various groups for resources. Most of Kenya’s peoples combined livestock raising with agriculture, although some, like the Nilotic-speaking Masai, were nomadic herders. Unlike nearby regions such as Ethiopia and Uganda, Kenya did not experience the emergence of large, centralized states or empires. deeper links

A Brief History of Kenya About 2.5 million years ago Homo habilis lived in the rich fertile rift valley. By 50,000 BC Homo erectus had emerged and Stone age cultures spread over this area. The forefathers of Homo sapiens became hunter gatherers. Cushitic- speaking agro-pastoral people from the north, Ethiopia, and pastoral Nolites followed from the Nile valley moved across during 3000 to 1500 BC.
Bantu speaking cattle herders and cultivators came from Sudan and West Africa between 500 BC and 500 AD. By about 800 AD Omani-Arab traders operated down the east African coast, under the Sultan of Zanzibar, and intermarried with the Bantu creating the Swahili culture.
In the 16th and 17th Centuries the Portuguese gained control of coastal trade, but Arab resistance saw their power restored
During 1780 and 1850 Britain, France Germany and America established trading concessions with Zanzibar, but by 1895 Kenya had become a British protectorate. During the late 1890s and early 1900s the Kenya- Uganda railway was built and a white settler community was established.
When Kenya became a British colony in 1919, organized African political activity developed. By 1944 KANU (Kenya African National Union) had formed, and

History: Excavations in Kenya suggest that the region is the cradle of humanity, the home some 3.25 million years ago of Homo habilis , from whom Homo sapiens descended. What is certain is that, in more recent times, Kenya was the settling place of a huge number of tribes from all over Africa, with a long history of migration, settlement and conflict. During the following centuries, the region became prosperous on the profits of trade, and also as an entrepôt for commerce from the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century, and having wrested control of the area’s trade from the Arabs, absorbed Kenya into their commercial empire. By 1720 they had been driven out by the Arabs, and for the next two centuries the region was largely ruled by Omani Dynasties from Arabia. During the 1820s, a local power struggle led to the British being invited into the region by the Mazrui Dynasty, and, by the middle of the century, both the British and the Germans were competing for control of the coast and its hinterland during the second great colonial period. By the 1890s the threat of the Masai tribesmen had, by a mixture of diplomacy and war, largely been neutralised, and the British were able to penetrate into the highlands. The Mombasa to Uganda railway line was constructed at this time, and Nairobi owes its present importance to the fact that it was a convenient staging point on the edge of the highlands. It soon became the headquarters of the British administration.

        Abstract:
Inspired by Eastern European precedents, Zanzibar's revolutionary regime in the 1960s and 1970s established the Young Pioneers as an institution through which to inculcate the sort of discipline perceived as necessary for nation building. I argue that through an emphasis on Pioneer parades, revolutionary elites allowed themselves to be persuaded by forms and appearances. They prized marching bodies of young men and women more for their visual effect than for the discipline they produced. Parades provided periodic evidence of good citizenship and conformity; they functioned as a strategy of display and a ritual of citizenship, more than as a discipline in the Foucauldian sense. This distinction explains how a rare accumulation of power on the part of a postcolonial elite in Africa could be both spectacular and ephemeral at the sametime. Moyer, Eileen.

      Abstract:
This article uses three case studies from rural Senegalese communal organizations to examine the dynamic nature of citizenship and participation. Citizenship reflects a set of expectations about rights and responsibilities that a par-ticular community and its members have for one another. The work illustrates two conditions under which those expectations can change. First, when the community does not incorporate inclusive decision-making institutions that value the involvement of all participants, individuals may question their citizenship rights and exit the community. Second, when the community cannot live up to the material expectations that members have for it, people may question why they must responsibly give time, energy, or resources to the community. The article demonstrates how state actors, macroeconomic forces, and power relations shape the nature of decision-making processes and the ability of the com-munity to meet its social contract.
