Africanet Country by Country Information Kenya Capsule History * Kenya was first populated by a number of small dispersed tribal groups, the main groups were the Kikuyu, Kamba, Luo and Masai. These tribes shared the same area of land although they all had different origins. * It wasn't until the 19th century that outsiders entered the interior of the country and as a result Kenya escaped the worst of the Arab slavers who concentrated more further to the south. * The coast however helped to form an important part of a chain of Omani Arab trading posts. These strings of trading posts dealt mainly in ivory and slaves and were under the control of the Sultan of Zanzibar. * The overshadowing of the Sultan's powers started in the late 19th century when both British and German personnel obtained trading concessions along the coast. * Britain was allotted what is now Uganda and Kenya; Germany was allotted what is now mainland Tanzania. * In 1893 Uganda became a British protectorate closely followed by Kenya - 1895. The British were just interested in controlling the rich resources of Uganda and to facilitate this they built a railway between Mombasa and Kampala using labourers from India, many of whom remained and have become todays merchant class. * At the turn of the century British attention was drawn away from Uganda and settled upon Kenya. White farmers went in and set up plantations producing export crops. During this process many Africans lost their land; they were then forced onto inferior land or onto the labour market as a result of hut taxes imposed by the colonial administration.

A number of people seem to get quite irate with some of the claims made in here, and want me to alter them. If you can direct me to a more authoritative source, I'd be glad to update it. KENYATTA Taa ya Kenya or Swahili for the 'Light of Kenya' was the man who brought the light of independence to Kenya. Indeed, he was a beacon, a rallying point for suffering Kenyans to fight for their rights, justice and freedom. His brilliance gave strength and aspiration to people beyond the boundaries of Kenya, indeed beyond the shores of Africa. Just as one light shines in total darkness and provides a raliying point, so did Ken-yatta become the focus of the freedom fight for Kenya over half a century to dispell the darkness and injustice of colonialism. Before matter can become light, it has to suffer the rigours of heat. So did Kenyatta suffer the rigorous of imprisonment to bring independence to Kenya. As the founding father of Kenya, and its undisputed leader, he came to be known as Mzee, Swahili for a respected eider. No chronology can adequately reflect the many sided achievements of Mzee Kenyatta. His life is the life of the free Kenya nation chronicled here.

We may start selling some carvings, baskets, and other miscellaneous Kenyan stuff that my family brought back over the years. If we do this, we will set up a page with pictures and descriptions. The Kenya quizzes are still some of the most popular pages on the site. Future of the site This site was one of the first Kenya sites on the web. As far as we know, only RC Bowen's page was up before ours, although a couple of others came online around the same time as ours. We built the majority of this site in 1996 and 1997, when we had much more time than we have now. We get a lot of email about Kenya and about linking to this site. We try to respond to as many as possible, but simply don't have time any more to do so. Also, we get a lot of questions about where to stay in Kenya, what it is like there, whether it is safe, etc. We haven't been to Kenya since 1989 and don't feel like we can honestly answer these questions anymore. History of Kenya Written records and archeological evidence are the two primary sources of historical information about Kenya. The written records focus on the coastal region primarily because of its rich history of trade with the southern Arab nations. The Kenyan interior, however, remained mostly undocumented prior to the 19th century. The arrival of the Europeans brought an end to the mystery of this diverse region of the world. Archeology reveals the secrets of the development of civilization in the Kenyan heartland. The Rift Valley, which runs through the center of Kenya, has long been regarded as the cradle of civilization. Charles Darwin perpetuated this theory in his work On The Origin of Species . Darwin's theory that humans and the higher apes probably had a common ancestor led to the conclusion that humankind originated where the apes were found: East Africa. Early archeological discoveries at Lake Turkana in Kenya, at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and along the Kagera River in Uganda support Darwin's guesswork with hard evidence. Ancient hominoid, or human-like skulls dating back 21/2 million years were discovered at these sites. Although archeologists believe there were originally at least three different species of hominid roaming the plains of Kenya, evidence suggests only one species evolved and developed into Homo sapiens. The Rift Valley region, therefore, earns the distinction in most archeological circles as the area where man first stood upright and began his life-long quest for food and water.

A massive truck bomb exploded outside the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi on August 7, 1998. Simultaneously, another bomb went off outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attacks killed 224 people and injured thousands. The United States brought four men accused of having links to Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network to trial for the attacks. They were jailed for life without parole. U.S. prosecutors indicted bin Laden in connection with the embassy bombings. Washington also blamed him and his al Qaeda group for the September 11 attacks on the United States last year.

Kenya - History By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman The early dates of prehistoric sites in Africa support the belief that this continent was the cradle of early man. An amazing discovery made by Kenyan anthropologist Richard Leakey at Koobi Fora along the shore of Lake Rudolf in Kenya confirmed that belief. Leakey and his fellow workers uncovered some 400 hominid remains, representing perhaps 230 individuals, making Koobi Fora the site of the richest and most varied collection of early human remains found in the world. Here, apparently, was the cradle of man-the-toolmaker; deliberately shaped flints found beside the lake have been dated as 2.5 millions years old. In 1972 a dramatic new discovery was made on the eastern shore of the lake: the skull and leg bones of one of the creatures who made the tools, and probably man's earliest known ancestor. Known as "1470 Man" (as he was coded by the anthropologists as "Skull 1470"), he was a hunter. He used a simple pebble-toola small natural stone from which flakes were chipped to leave a sharp cutting edge. The remains found at Lake Rudolf indicate that "1470 Man" could stand and walk upright, and is believed to be the direct ancestor of modern man.

He was joined two years later by Rev. Johann Rebman. The two CMS intended to link a CMS station was established at Rabai in the coastal region at the same time. The missionaries had to study and learn African languages in order to communicate and spread Christianity. This resulted in Krapf translated genesis 1-3 in Kiswahili. In 1847, Krapf translated genesis 1-3 in Kiswahili and visited Ukambani in an evangelistic exploration while Rebman visited Taita. In 1848, Krapf translated St. Luke’s gospel into Nyika (Rabai) and in 1850, St. Mark’s gospel into Kamba (some local languages). Three years later, Mringe a dying cripple became the first Anglican convert to be baptized. Later a colony was set up by CMS at free town for freed slaves. This became the venue for the baptism of the first giriama coverts.

The Omani Hegemony [General Background] The history of Kenya as a political entity began with the region's inclusion in the British sphere of influence in the late nineteenth century and the subsequent establishment of a British protectorate and colony there. The British brought together the country's diverse elements under a unified administration and bestowed on it the name Kenya after the 5,200-meter peak in the central highlands that the Kikuyu called kere nyaga, the "mountain of whiteness." Improvement in the lot of the average African was limited until after World War II when political movements, like that among the Kikuyu led by Jomo Kenyatta, demanded a role for the black majority in Kenya's government. The determination of the European community to retain exclusive control in a "White Man's Country" and the continued denial of African rights set off a violent reaction during the Mau Mau emergency in the 1950s. The Kikuyu-led insurrection was suppressed, and the lengthy imprisonment of Kenyatta and other African leaders suspected of complicity in it caused a hiatus in organized African political activity until 1960, when the campaign for majority rule within the framework of the colonial regime succeeded in submerging ethnic differences among Africans and in winning the recognition of British authorities.
