People of Kenya According to the 1989 Census, there were 42 tribes living in Kenya, as well as all of the non-African people groups. Therefore there are 42 ethnic languages spoken in Kenya apart from English and Swahili. The average life expectancy at birth in Kenya is 45 years. The low life expectancy and years of high birth rates have combined to give Kenya a young population: 41 percent of the people were younger than age 15 in 2003. Some 66 percent of Kenya's population lives in rural areas, most concentrated in the fertile southern half of the country. Flag of Kenya The Kenyan Flag contains three equal horizontal bands of black (top), red, and green; the red band is edged in white; a large warrior's shield covering crossed spears is superimposed at the center. Black represents the people of Kenya. Red represents the blood shed in the fight for independence. Green represents the fertility of the land. White represents peace. The shield of the warrior represents Kenya's pride and tradition.

Economy of Kenya Kenyan economy has been traditionally based on agriculture. Although during the past decades the growth of industry and tourism has decreased agriculture's dominance, farming activity still accounts for the major part of the country's economy.

24. Islam In Africa-Kenya History
The colonial history of Kenya dates from the Berlin Conference of 1885, when the European powers first partitioned East Africa into spheres of influence.
http://www.islaminafrica.org/kenya-h.htm
HISTORY
Fossils found in East Africa suggest that proto- humans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago. Recent finds near Kenya's Lake Turkana indicate that the Homo genus of humans lived in the area 2.6 million years ago. Cushitic-speaking people, who occupied the area from about 1000 BC, received Arab traders by the first century AD. Kenya's proximity to the Arabian Peninsula invited colonization, and Arab and Persian settlements were founded along the coast by the eighth century AD. By then, Bantu and Nilotic peoples had moved into the area.
The Swahili language, a mixture of Bantu and Arabic, developed as a lingua franca for trade between the different peoples. Arab dominance was eclipsed by the arrival in 1498 of the Portuguese, who gave way in turn to Islamic control under the Imam of Oman in the 1600s. Britain established its influence in the 19th century. The colonial history of Kenya dates from the Berlin Conference of 1885, when the European powers first par-titioned East Africa into spheres of influence. In 1895, the British Gov- ernment established the East African Protectorate and, soon after, opened the fertile highlands to white settlers. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before it was officially made a British colony in 1920, but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944.

25. Improved Fallows In Kenya: History, Farmer Practice, And Impacts
IFPRIEnvironment and Production Technology Division Discussion Paper 115 Abstract.

IFPRI Home Research Research Divisions Environment and Production Technology Division ... Discussion Papers Discussion Paper No. 115 Abstract Improved Fallows in Kenya: History, Farmer Practice, and Impacts Frank Place, Steve Franzel, Qureish Noordin, and Bashir Jama February 2004
Abstract Empirical results suggest that improved fallows almost always double on-farm maize yields. In addition, the data indicates that poor households use improved fallows at much greater rate (about 30 percent) than they do fertilizer (8 percent), though, on average, the size of fallow plots remains small, at 440m2. As a result, despite these promising signs, the improved fallow systems were not found to be linked to improved household level food security or poverty indicators primarily, primarily because the size of the fields under the agroforestry systems was on average, quite small. Conclusion To conclude, improved fallows represent a technically effective and financially profitable technology that is attractive to poor households with little cash available for investment. They are being used and adopted by a significant proportion of households in areas of western Kenya where they had been disseminated in the late 1990s. On the other hand, farm sizes are small and the ability of farmers to set aside land, even for a season is limited. Hence, the average size improved fallow is small among adopting farmers. Looking to the future, it is best to view improved fallows as a component of a broader integrated soil fertility management strategy for farmers. Farmers will also use manure, compost, and to some degree, fertilizer. Improved fallows have a comparative advantage in that they are relatively labor saving over manure or compost, they have a low risk of failure in supplying nutrients on the farm (because of extensive rooting systems), and they offer some by-products. Our evidence suggests that they may serve as an entry point for improved soil fertility management for farmers who had previously not invested in soil fertility management.

Kenya Time and Date Kenya History Back to Top Fossils found in East Africa suggest that protohumans roamed the area more than 20 million years ago. Recent finds near Kenya's Lake Turkana suggest that hominids lived in the area 2.6 million years ago.A small but remarkable leftist opposition party, the Kenya People's Union (KPU), was formed in 1966, led by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, a former vice president and Luo elder. The KPU was banned and its leader detained after political unrest related to Kenyatta's visit to Nyanza Province. No new opposition parties were formed after 1969, and KANU became the sole political party. At Kenyatta's death in August 1978, Vice President Daniel arap Moi became interim President. On October 14, Moi became President formally after he was elected head of KANU and designated its sole nominee. Moi was reelected for another 5-year term. Opposition parties won about 45% of the parliamentary seats, but Moi's KANU Party retained a majority of the legislature. Parliamentary reforms in November 1997 expanded political rights in Kenya, and the number of political parties grew rapidly. Moi won re-election as President in the December 1997 elections, and his KANU Party narrowly retained its parliamentary majority, with 109 out of 122 seats. In December 2002, the people of Kenya elected Mwai Kibaki as the nation’s third president. President Kibaki received 62 % of the vote, and his 15-party group, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), also won 59 % of the parliamentary seats.

... Useful travel links Kenya History On Dec. 12, 1963, Kenya became independent. In 1964 the country became a republic, with Kenyatta as president. More than 70% of the country was affected by the sub-Saharan drought of the early 1970s. After Kenyatta's death in 1978, Vice President Daniel arap Moi succeeded him as president. In 1992, Moi was re-elected president in Kenya's first multiparty election in 26 years. Opponents denounced the election as rigged. Under the constitution Moi who was forced to retire nominated Uhuru Kenyatta, son of Kenya's first leader, as the Kenya African National Union (KANU) candidate for president. Mwai Kibaki, who ran against Moi in 1992 and 1997 and once was his vice president, was the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) candidate and the most popular of all the candidates. Kibaki was elected president with 62% of the vote, and NARC won a majority of seats in the national assembly.

Kenya (06/05) Read More Kenya There are frequent outbreaks of cholera, and malaria is endemic in Kenya outside Nairobi. Travelers to Kenya should take malaria prophylaxis. P. falciparum malaria, the serious and sometimes fatal strain in Kenya, is resistant to the anti-malarial drug chloroquine. Because travelers to Kenya are at high risk for contracting malaria, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that travelers should take one of the following antimalarial drugs: mefloquine (LariamTM), doxycycline, or atovaquone/proguanil (MalaroneTM). The CDC has determined that a traveler who is on an appropriate antimalarial drug has a greatly reduced chance of contracting the disease. In addition, other personal protective measures, such as the use of insect repellents, help to reduce malaria ris ... [ Read More U.S. Embassy Nairobi - Press Releases

    http://www.world-odyssey.com/kenya/kenya-history.htm
Essential Info Highlights Itineraries History For hundreds of years Kenya's coastal regions have been staging posts for different peoples and cultures, especially the Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula who came to trade and ultimately settle. The Arab grip on the economy was temporarily lost to the Portuguese who fought the Arabs in a series of naval bombardments and street battles between the 15th to 17th Centuries. However, with the Portuguese colonies stretching as far India, maintaining a forceful presence was a constant struggle and the Arabs wrestled back control of this coastal area. The Sultans of Oman then enjoyed a period of stability and economic expansion until the European colonialists, namely Britain and Germany, started to take an interest in the area. The Omani Sultan moved his power base to Zanzibar in 1832 and the British had made the coastal region a Protectorate by the end of the 19th Century. Meanwhile a number of European explorers arrived to explore the interior which became famous for its proud and fierce warrior tribes, in particular the Masai. After the construction of the famous 'Lunatic Express' railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria the British based their colonial headquarters in Nairobi and so began the white settlement of the rich, fertile highlands.

The Portuguese remained on the East African coast for 200 years with well established trading posts. These newest immigrants spent their time trading gold from the interior and exporting slaves to work on the plantations in North America and East Indies. Portuguese rule was harsh, unpopular, and economically debilitating for the local people. Throughout the 17th century, the Arabs attempted to reestablish links with their East African outposts. This led to an ongoing series of confrontations with the Portuguese to establish dominance. The Omani ships prevailed and by the early 1700s, the Portuguese had been routed completely. By 1720, the last remaining Portuguese left for good, leaving the East African coast again under Arab control. Other than a cross overlooking the sea near Mombasa, virtually no other trace of the hated Portuguese rule remains today. Kenya gained independence from England in 1963, following a so-called Mau Mau rebellion (even though there is no tribe of that name.) Jomo Kenyatta was Kenya's first president. Like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Kenyatta was elected after being released from jail. In 1975 many of the names of places in Kenya changed, resorting to their original, by presidential decree. Lake Rudolf, for example, was renamed Lake Turkana. With Kenyatta's death in 1978 came Daniel Arap Moi, a member of the Tugen tribe. Moi's rule was characterized by nepotism, rifts and dissension. He took criticism badly and as a result oversaw the disbanding of tribal societies, disrupted universities and harassed opposition politicians. A coup attempt by the Kenyan Air Force in 1982 was put down by forces loyal to Moi. With the winds of democratic pluralism sweeping Africa in the late 1980s and early 1990s, international aid for Moi's Kenya was suspended.

For me, the book also is evocative of other, larger issues assimilation and culture and human interaction and environment.
Zesch, a lawyer who abandoned the practice of law to write, became determined to understand how a timid farm boy like his great- great-great uncle became Indianized in such a short time, even fighting alongside the Comanches against the encroaching settlers.
His research took him to Washington, D.C., Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas as well as to several descendants of children who had grown up in tribes. He also talked to Comanche elders.
In the 1850s and 1870s many children were captured. Two were from Reedsburg and were taken when their parents, who had been close to the Winnebago Indians while they lived in Wisconsin, moved to the Texas frontier. Zesch found that after these children were released they generally disliked staying indoors, wandered off into the woods for a few days, moved around a lot and, as adults, had trouble holding on to regular jobs.
