Travel Phonecard Jump to Other Countries Kenya Morocco South Africa Tanzania Kenya Newsletter - June 2004 Featured Country: Kenya The Kenyan government has done a great job of selling Kenya to travelers, with companies like McDonald's and the game show Survivor , using their marketing power to promote Kenya as Africa's number one safari country. Some critics have said that travelers are almost convinced that the Serengeti and Mt. Kilimanjaro are in Kenya, when in fact, they are in the neighboring country of Tanzania. Kenya still remains the entrance to spectacular wildlife, such as the Masai Mara, with glorious mountain ranges and cultures, and old thriving Swahili cities like Mombasa and Lamu. Sadly, though, Kenya's economy has decayed, the government corruption has increased, crime has become more commonplace, and the security situation has destabilized in the north (and in a few other parts). You can however - and thousands of people do each year - visit Kenya and have no problem. If you're a bit attentive, and don't mind a little bit of chaos, especially in Nairobi, Kenya is an excellent place to explore.

Wildebeest are the most numerous large animal in East Africa, and the annual migrations of these ungainly animals through Tanzania and Kenya is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The fossil evidence suggests that the wildebeest emerged at about the same time that our hominid ancestors began to walk upright - when the savannah grasslands developed about 3.5 million years ago. Kenya's ecology is balanced on a knife's edge. The population is rising at a rate of 3.8 percent per year - the highest growth rate in the world - and the majority of the population is under the age of fifteen. Polygamous families with three or four wives and as many as twelve children are not uncommon. The evidence accumulated over the last few decades points increasingly to Kenya and Ethiopia as having been the "Cradle of Mankind." Kenya is also a cultural microcosm of Africa, with three major language groups binding together the cultural tapestry of more than forty distinct ethnic groups. Kenya Book and Video Selections

June 17, 2003 The devastating impact that terrorism has on tourism and the economies of developing countries became strikingly obvious to me during lunch recently at the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya. The landmark eatery, which borders a game park, serves every barbecued meat imaginable: wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, even giraffe and crocodile. Normally it's teeming with European and American tourists. But Kenya's tourism business has fallen on hard times after several Western countries urged their citizens not to travel here because of the risk of terrorist attacks. British Airways has suspended flights to Kenya. As I looked around the restaurant, there was no hiding the effect of the travel warnings. The place was dead. "Business is just terrible," Martin Dunford, chairman of the Tamarind Group, which owns the Carnivore, groaned as he walked around the empty tables. Tourism is crucial to Kenya's economy, bringing in U.S. $500 million in annual revenue, according to the Kenya Tourism Federation. Kenyan tourism officials have estimated that Kenya is now losing at least $1 million every day because of the decline in tourism.
