Exploring Kenya
Africa Homepage Geographia Homepage K enya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya. Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most outdoor acitivities (including safari and mountain climbing) is during the dry season (June-September).

    The GA International Committee Study Tour to Kenya from 24 July to 15 August 2004 was led by Dr Kevin Cook from St Mary’s College, Twickenham.
    Aim
    To introduce geographical educators to key aspects of the contemporary geography of Kenya with a view to encouraging and enhancing their teaching of geographical themes and issues at all levels in schools and colleges.
    Methodology
    The Tour had an ethnographic flavour and developmental theme and involved observation, interpretation and discussion with Kenyan specialists. It is hoped that teaching materials will be produced by party members for use as regional, thematic or case studies.
    Itinerary
    The Tour took in the following locations and activities:
    A tour of Mombasa included a visit to streetchildren project as guests of Oxfam and to hotels as part of an investigation of tourism development. After lunch we toured Mombasa Island.
    At Machakos we looked at post-colonial agricultural transformation, i.e. ‘more people-less erosion’, as well as at sustainable development issues, the role of women in development. This included a trip to to Machakos agricultural research station where we discussed green revolution and genetically modified crops.

    Bombolulu Workshops and Craft Centre, Bamburi, Mombasa

    Here 150 people with a variety of physical disabilities are trained and employed in handicraft production. Their bags beads, woodcrafts and other items are sold locally to tourists and exported to 'fair trade' organisations including Oxfam. We were encouraged to chat to the workers who were very skilled, producing high quality goods. An inspiring visit.
    After a lunch of local dishes we toured Mombasa Island.
    Wednesday 28 July 2004
    Haller Park, Bamburi

    Today some of the party took a boat out to the coral reef while others headed for Haller Park. This is part of the reclamation project of the quarries of the Bamburi cement works – so we can tell David Waugh how it has progressed. Established only 33 years ago the wildlife park looks as it if it has been there forever. We would like to bring home the giant tortoise, which is such an efficient lawn mower.
    Thursday 29 July 2004
    Machakos
    Geographers ‘help’ the Women’s Group make the ditches and banks to help water retention in this semi-arid area. But we could not compete with their singing. We visited a family farm (shamba) in the Machakos Hills, an area where ‘bottom up development’ has succeeded despite increasing population. Groups of women move from farm to farm to share the labour. The hospitality we received from the extended family was wonderful and we ate a local meal, which included a goat slaughtered (previously) for the occasion.

    Established in 1980, the ISK Intercultural Program gives every student from Kindergarten through grade twelve the opportunity to know an important part of the great African continent. The educational objectives of the Intercultural Program expeditions include:
    • developing an increased understanding of the cultures and people of Kenya;
    • gaining familiarity with Kenya's geography and ecosystems;
    • meeting physical challenges.
    The program provides an Intercultural experience for all students K-12. It is an opportunity for all to experience the rich variety of culture, geography, history, and wildlife relationships with the people of Kenya, through personal interaction with the indigenous environment. The program is designed in collaboration with classroom teachers to make it relevant to the topics being covered within the curriculum. Overnight trips begin in Grade 3, with one night camping at Lake Naivasha, in the shadow of a dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. This coincides with the Grade 3 unit on rocks, so the students focus on the geological features of the area and examine local igneous and sedimentary rocks. Other examples: Grade 5
    The students:
    • study the Mau Mau freedom fighters' history;

    Kenya lies on the equator and is bordered on the north by Sudan, Somalia and Ethopia; Uganda and Lake Victoria lie to the west; Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro are to the south while the Indian Ocean lies to the east. Kenya has twenty mountains, six of which rise to over 3,000 meters (9,900 feet). The Tana River, largest in the country, supports river traffic in its lower regions. Most of Kenya's rivers and small lakes dry up during the dry season making perennial water shortages an ongoing problem. Before the formation of the Rift Valley, Kenya's climate and vegetation could best be characterized as tropical. The great geological changes that created the Rift triggered extreme climatic changes as well. After millions of years of evolution, Kenya's climates now range from semi-arid to tropical, temperate to alpine, and also include artic. The country has three main geographic regions, each characterized by its own unique climate and vegetation.
