Background:
Revered president and liberation struggle icon Jomo KENYATTA led Kenya from independence until his death in 1978, when 2nd President Daniel Toroitich arap MOI took power in a constitutional succession.
The country was a de facto one-party state from 1969 until 1982 when the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) made itself the sole legal party in Kenya. MOI acceded to internal and external pressure for political liberalization in late 1991. The ethnically fractured opposition failed to dislodge KANU from power in elections in 1992 and 1997, which were marred by violence and fraud, but are viewed as having generally reflected the will of the Kenyan people. President MOI stepped down in December of 2002 following fair and peaceful elections. Mwai KIBAKI, running as the candidate of the multiethnic, united opposition group, the National Rainbow Coalition, defeated KANU candidate Uhuru KENYATTA and assumed the presidency following a campaign centered on an anticorruption platform.

BellaOnline's African Culture Editor Keeping Safe In Kenya When traveling to Kenya there are a few things you need to be aware of. Kenya is a patriarchal society. The man comes first and the women come last. Rape is not a crime in Kenya. If a women is raped she must have done something to provoke the man. Not all Kenyans feel this way but it is the general consensus. There may be a law on the books about rape, however it is not or very difficult to enforce. Here are some ways to keep yourself safe in Kenya: Clothing - I highly recommend skirts for women. You want your skirts to be at least knee length and of the gathered variety. You don't want a tight or snug fitting skirts or skirts with slits up to your thigh. Also, wear a slip. It is considered very sensual or erotic if a man can see the shape of your thighs. As for shirts, they should not be snug and have short or long sleeves. I don't recommend sleeveless tops. If you are in an urban area like Nairobi or Mombasa, shorts and trousers will do. However, you will find that you are treated better when you have a skirt on. For men, trousers and shirts. Shirts can be short or long-sleeved. Shorts are fine for urban areas, but like the women you will find you are treated better when you dress as the Kenyan culture dresses.

88. Kenya - Field Experience In Eldoret, Kenya
Special emphasis is placed on understanding Kenyan culture and appreciating localcustoms, communities, and daily life. The program is open to all majors.
http://www.central.edu/abroad/kenya/summerkenya.html
Due to continued travel warnings in Kenya, the Summer 2005 Kenya program has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope the program will be offered in 2006. Located on the equator on the eastern coast of Africa, Kenya is a land of striking physical and social diversity. It is a country with deserts and forests, mountains and lowlands, freshwater lakes and miles of ocean coastline. Kenya is well known for its wildlife and game reserves, a home to the "big five" - cape buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos, and more species of birds than anywhere else in the world. The population of Kenya is approximately 30 million people, consisting of 42 tribes and more than 70 ethnic groups. To take advantage of such a rich learning environment, Central College offers a summer field course concentrating on the natural sciences at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. During the five-week program, students earn 3 credits in cross-cultural studies and 3 natural science credits. The program is open to all majors. Lake Victoria, the Great Rift Valley, and the Masai Mara Reserve provide outstanding opportunities for students to observe flora and fauna in a wonderful variety of exosystems.

quotes about culture and customs key testimonies featuring culture and customs Concern with the circumcision ritual, and its wider meaning, is a major theme of the testimonies, and attitudes towards it vary. Many Sabaot see it as central to their culture and defend it fiercely against opposition from the Church, health organisations and some individuals in the community. Indeed, the Bukusu, and the Teso who emigrated to Mount Elgon, say that they now practice male circumcision due to Sabaot influence. Several narrators, however, say they have not circumcised their children because its importance has declined. And attitudes to female circumcision - the practice that has been subject to most external opposition - are particularly ambiguous, with several women speaking out against it. The most widespread argument for circumcision is that it is a necessary ritual for transition into adulthood, through which young people learn of their forthcoming roles and responsibilities. Only a few give other explanations, ranging from the belief "that if one wasn't circumcised, he or she will not bear children", to circumcision among women being necessary as a means of "eradicating [female desire and therefore] prostitution"

Life Onboard LAST UPDATE July 12, 2005 site design imagesparkle.com February 27, 2005 Peter Orwa Awour (photo by Todd Frank) Peter Orwa Awour was born in a small Western Kenyan village on the shores of Lake Victoria. Naturally, while growing up he formed a deep love for the nature, wildlife, and culture of his country. After working as a prison officer and boxing for the Kenyan Prison team, Mr. Orwa joined the Trans African Cultural Group in order to share the riches of Kenya with the world. He made his first trip to Japan on a cultural exchange and his life was changed forever. Peter Band member Eric Mwangi Wakanyi (photo by Todd Frank) He immediately felt a connection with the culture and music of Japan, and began to learn more, including the language, which he now speaks fluently. During his five year stay in Japan in the late 1970s, he reached the rank of first middleweight contender under the Japan Boxing Commission, made numerous television appearances, and even recorded a hit television theme song. He returned to Kenya in 1980 and founded his first tour company, catering to Japanese tourists to Kenya.

Farming, Sanitation, and Nutrition in Kenya
This interview is with an American health student who worked in Kenya with women farmers. She worked for a summer with women in the rural suburbs of Kenya, who are more Westernized than women in more remote rural areas. She worked with two non-governmental organizations (NGO's): Life Water International and Farming Systems Kenya. She also worked at a local hospital with a clinical nutritionist. In Kenya, women are the farmers, as well as the mothers, caretakers, and salespeople: Women in Kenya wear a lot of hats. In fact, they wear pretty much all the hats that can be worn. They are the mothers, the sole people that are going to be taking care of their children. They are the farmers, they are the ones that are in the marketplace. Often they are the ones that are handling much of the financial situations even, although they don't necessarily have control over it, they are asked to handle it. Pretty much any area of life, the needs of the family or an individual, a woman would have to handle or balance.
    Health Problems: Sanitation and Nutrition
As farmers and caregivers, women in Kenya have control over nutrition, through water gathering, cooking, and crop choice.

Choose a Topic for Your Essay
Topic is Assigned Topic is Not Assigned
    Topic Has Been Assigned
You may have no choice as to your topic. If this is the case, you still may not be ready to jump to the next step. Think about the type of paper you are expected to produce. Should it be a general overview, or a specific analysis of the topic? If it should be an overview, then you are probably ready to move to the next step. If it should be a specific analysis, make sure your topic is fairly specific. If it is too general, you must choose a narrower subtopic to discuss. For example, the topic "KENYA" is a general one. If your objective is to write an overview, this topic is suitable. If your objective is to write a specific analysis, this topic is too general. You must narrow it to something like "Politics in Kenya" or "Kenya's Culture." Once you have determined that your topic will be suitable, you can move on. Go on to the next step. Return to the essay home page.
    Topic Has Not Been Assigned
If you have not been assigned a topic, then the whole world lies before you. Sometimes that seems to make the task of starting even more intimidating. Actually, this means that you are free to choose a topic of interest to you, which will often make your essay a stronger one.

In Kenya, Population Services International's (PSI) malaria prevention project has averted an estimated 16,000 child deaths in less than three years through provision of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs). PSI/Kenya's intensive five-year effort and creative communications campaigns have put it on track to achieve the Roll Back Malaria target of 60% ITN coverage of pregnant women and children under five by 2005. Household ownership of nets increased from 22% in 2000 to 31% in 2003, and awareness of ITNs as an effective malaria prevention strategy increased from 3% in 2001 to 44% in 2003.
