Besides serving as independent learning centers, many centers have programs that are directly integrated into the school curriculum. Some examples:
    • The DeKalb County (Ga.) School System provides digital editing and multimedia equipment to all 118 of its library media centers and utilizes a “Curriculum Design Blueprint” that integrates resource-based teaching and information literacy skills into the curriculum.

It opened on Main Street in 1928. The present facility on Fontaine Road was opened in 1970. It is one of five high schools in Fayette County, serving approximately 2000 students in grades 9-12. Approximately seventy-four percent of Henry Clay's graduates go on to enroll in a four year college and ten percent continue in a two year school. The curriculum encouraged at Henry Clay includes academics, career-oriented programs, fine arts enrichment, athletics, and other extracurricular activities. One of the National Education Goals is for all Americans to be literate and to possess the knowledge and skills to compete in a global economy. This emphasis on information literacy, as referenced in the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Information Literacy Standards , increases the importance of library media center and the library media specialist within the school curriculum. The Kentucky Benchmarks for the Information Literacy Standards provide links to resources which the LMS can easily incorporate (or adapt) within his/her own school media program. Kentucky's Core Content for assessment has been identified as the content essential for all students to know. Kentucky educators have delineated many academic expectations that require students to access and synthesize information in multiple formats. Beyond Proficiency: Essentials of a Distinguished Library Media Program (p. 6) lists examples of specific academic expectations supported by the school Library Media Program.

    • What are the possible effects of the new Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) on school districts?
    SUMMARY:
    • Health information in student records covered under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is not subject to HIPAA requirements. School-based health centers may be subject to HIPAA requirements if they are sponsored by HIPAA-compliant health organizations. School nurses may be subject to HIPAA requirements if they engage in electronic billing. Medicaid billing may not be subject to HIPAA requirements if the information is not submitted electronically. Communications between schools and health care providers may be affected by HIPAA. Health care coverage for district employees is not affected by HIPAA, but flexible spending accounts may be.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA") mandates actions that "covered entities" must take to protect the privacy of an individual's health information. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ("HHS") has issued rules to implement and enforce these privacy requirements. Generally, entities covered by HIPAA may release or receive "protected health information" about an individual only if that individual gives permission or the Act expressly permits its release.
