In Central City, KY, Muhlenberg County library officials voted 4-1 March 26 against posting a donated display containing the Ten Commandments. The library was offered the Ten Commandments, along with other American "founding documents" like the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence, by a local group that promotes their display. However, the library board resisted, citing concern about exposing the library to a lawsuit over the separation between church and state.

News about Kentucky archivists and archives Update on the A*Census The following is from Vicki Walch at COSHRC:
We are happy to report that the first official invitations to participate in the A*CENSUS went in the mail last Friday, April 30, to the nearly 12,000 individual names we had collected from archival associations, education providers, and other sources. Everyone on our mailing list should expect to receive the letter this week. It will include your own personal ID number and instructions for logging onto the online survey form. At the end of this week (May 7-8), everyone on our list for whom we have an email address (about 80% of the total) can expect to receive a follow-up, personalized email from MSI, the survey firm that is managing the data collection for us, with the same ID number and log-on instructions. At the end of May, we plan to mail a paper version of the A*CENSUS survey to those individuals for whom we did NOT have an email address. We are encouraging everyone to complete the A*CENSUS on the Web if at all possible. You will be helping us make the A*CENSUS comprehensive and truly representative of the entire archival community if you respond EARLY via the Web. That way we can focus our expenditures on an effort to reach underserved communities instead of using them to send you the paper version and multiple reminders to respond.

ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES
Many archives and libraries have maps, gazetteers, and other place-finding aids about Kentucky. They frequently have collections of previous research such as family and local histories and biographies. Many have record-finding aids such as guides to their own collections or inventories of records housed elsewhere in the state. Archives and libraries located near state boundaries usually collect records relating to the adjacent states. The following archives, libraries, and societies have collections and services useful to genealogical researchers:
Archives •Department for Libraries and Archives Public Records Division
300 Coffee Tree Road Frankfort, KY Telephone: 1-502-564-8300 Fax: 1-502-564-5773 Internet: www.kdla.net The mailing address is: P.O. Box 537 Frankfort, KY 40601-0537 The Department for Libraries and Archives is the central repository for city-, county-, and state-level records. It has two facilities of particular interest to genealogists. The state library has printed materials, and the state archives maintains original Kentucky government records and other historical documents. Many of these repositories’ records are being microfilmed, and copies are being sent to the Family History Library. The Department of Libraries and Archives responds to genealogical requests but prefers that requests be sent on a form available on its Internet site or through the mail.
