US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements , loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. Applications of assistive technology in the classroom open a new world of possibilities in the education of the student with a disability. By adapting a student's environment, such as augmentative communication, adapted computers assisted pointing, writing devices and daily living tools, a student is able to take full advantage of the educational environment in ways that were never before imagined. Increasing awareness of these new tools and their potential by educators, reinforced by informed parents and federal legislation, is paving the way for the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) goal of self-sufficiency for every student. By federal law, every student with a disability is entitled to "a free and appropriate education "in the least restrictive environment." In addition, special education and related services must meet the individual needs of each identified student. To determine a student's needs and ensure that they are met, a team develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which includes the special education teacher, the regular education teacher parents and often the student. Services listed in the IEP are to be provided by the school at no cost to the parents. The IEP process is the means for providing the assistive technology students may need to receive an appropriate education. The Education for the Handicapped Act (EHA) was reauthorized in 1990 as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, P.L. 101-476, as amended) which now specifically addresses the inclusion of assistive technology in the IEP. The regulations stipulate that:

State Department of Education Requirements Although all states must comply with the federal provision of No Child Left Behind, many states have programs for mid-career changers individuals who already have a bachelor's degree—that are alternatives to the traditional route to teacher certification. Just as teacher certification requirements differ from state to state, so do alternative certification program offerings. In the State Departments of Education directory, RNT provides resources developed by the National Center for Alternative Certification: a coded list of alternative certification programs offered in each state, and an alternative licensure key that describes details about the types of programs offered by each state.
As this information about alternative certification is subject to change, you will still want to call for the most up-to-date information. Some states offer this information online and others will mail you a packet about state-approved alternative certification programs and requirements.

COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Teachers are needed in the field of special education.
Teaching special education is a challenging and rewarding career. This web site provides you with a road map to becoming a teacher in special education. What is special education?
Special education is instruction that is designed especially to meet the unique needs of a child who has a disability. Special education can be provided in the classroom, at home, in hospitals or institutions, or in other settings. Over five million children receive special education and related services each year in the United States. Each child receives instruction that is specially designed to meet the child's unique needs (that result from having a disability) and to help the child learn information and skills that other children are learning.

NCH Fact Sheet #10

Published by the National Coalition for the Homeless, July 2001 This fact sheet examines the barriers to public education faced by homeless children and youth, the progress states have made in removing those barriers, and current policy issues. A list of resources for further study is also provided.
BACKGROUND
Homeless children are by most accounts among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population. Families with children constitute approximately 40% of people who become homeless (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2001). These proportions are likely to be higher in rural areas; research indicates that families, single mothers, and children make up the largest group of people who are homeless in rural areas (Vissing, 1996).
REMOVING BARRIERS TO HOMELESS CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
Recent evaluations of the EHCY program reveal that while much progress has been made in ensuring homeless children's access to education, many barriers remain (see
