'Jesus Prom' offers a 'blessing' to disabled
By Stacy Springer Published: Monday, November 22, 2004 A "Jesus Prom" is more than a typical high school prom.
Two hundred volunteers came together at Calvary Christian Church in Winchester Friday night to host a formal dinner and dance specially designed for 80 guests with special needs.
The first Jesus Prom was held at Southland Christian Church in Lexington a few years ago. The event was based on the Bible verses Luke 14:12-14: "Jesus said to his host, 'When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.'"
After learning of the event during a church service at Southland, co-chairwoman and telecommunications senior Alison Matthews brought the idea to her youth minister at Calvary Christian Church.

But the 540-student school in the Frankfort Independent School District learned this week it met 100 percent of its reading and math goals. Primary principal Rich Crowe yesterday attributed the school's gains to reinforcing concepts with struggling readers in small groups. "I guess that was the magic bullet," he said.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the 1992 Americans with Disabilities Act may seem puzzling to the non-lawyer. Myths and half-truths abound. Some consultants and lawyers advise that schools and church buildings must be made totally accessible. Many board members and administrators fear that the cost of accommodations will be so high as to force schools and parish programs out of existence. Some school personnel continue to question accepting students with special needs. Can the average Catholic school provide the program adjustments needed by these students? This question should not be answered without a clear understanding of legal requirements.
