The course will look north to Canada, our largest trading partner, as it looks south at us: a country ten times its population whose culture exercises an hydraulic effect on its way of life. To explore these two distinct, but intimately-related nations which share the North American continent, this course will focus on the context of their politics, the nature of their constitutions, participation in their political lives, the structure of their governments, and the leading domestic and international issues in the life of these two post-industrial democratic republics. North American Politics will originate from Morehead State University, use the MSU Blackboard server, and be taught by William Green, Professor of Government at MSU. This course will answer this question by exploring four interrelated debates over North American urban life. First, do U.S. and Canadian cities have a similar character, regardless of the border separating them. Second, are Canadian cities uniform from region to region, unlike the distinctions we notice in United States between rust and sun belt cities. Third, if there are differences within Canada, can they be defined in regional and linguistic terms. Fourth, are the internal urban variations based on class, ethnicity, income and life-style one each side of the border? Leadership States During the first two years, the initiative focus was to provide assistance to 5 states. The ICMA, LGC, and NGA worked in partnership to support active living leadership strategies in California, Kentucky, Michigan, Colorado, and Washington. In August 2003, three new organizations joined the partnership – NACo, NCSL, and USCM – and Active Living Leadership activities were expanded to serve local and state leaders across the nation. While Active Living Leadership will continue to support some activities specific to particular regions or states, the Active Living Leadership Project will primarily focus on providing education and resources for local and state officials to foster sustainable active living policies, programs and places in communities across the country. Kentucky ICMA is currently working with several local communities to assist them in engaging in active living strategies. Nelson, Editor Ten years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Directories have been published for various Kentucky cities and counties since the early 1800s, though they may not exist for every year. Some directories focus on the businesses or occupations of an area, while others include heads of households, landowners, and voters. City and county directories are similar to present-day telephone books and are useful records for locating people. They were often published annually, listing heads of households and employed household members, their occupations, and their addresses. They can be used with census records or as substitutes for them. Directories are particularly helpful for research in large cities, where a high percentage of the people were renters, new arrivals, or temporary residents. In fact, a directory may be the only source to list an ancestor if he or she was not registered to vote and did not own property. Most households were included because the directories were created for salesmen, merchants, and others interested in contacting residents of an area. Directories have other clues that may require careful study to discover. For example, people in similar or related occupations were often relatives, in-laws, or friends. A year-by-year study of directories may reveal the movements of ancestors and relatives within the city and sometimes to or from other cities.
