Having presented these conditions to us, Mr. president, you have thrown down thegauntlet. Mr. john F. kennedy president of the United States of America

Khrushchev to John F. Kennedy
Dear Mr. President, Imagine, Mr. President, what if we were to present to you such an ultimatum as you have presented to us by your actions. How would you react to it? I think you would be outraged at such a move on our part. And this we would understand. Having presented these conditions to us, Mr. President, you have thrown down the gauntlet. Who asked you to do this? By what right have you done this? Our ties with the Republic of Cuba, as well as our relations with other nations, regardless of their political system, concern only the two countries between which these relations exist. And, if it were a matter of quarantine as mentioned in your letter, then, as is customary in international practice, it can be established only by states agreeing between themselves, and not by some third party. Quarantines exist, for example, on agricultural goods and products. However, in this case we are not talking about quarantines, but rather about much more serious matters, and you yourself understand this. His Excellency Mr. John F. Kennedy President of the United States of America

Office: President of the United States
Age: 46
Time in Office: 1961-1963
Born: 1917
Died: 1963
John Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 29, 1917, a descendent of Irish Catholics who had immigrated to America in the previous century. His father Joseph Kennedy was a combative businessman who became a multimillionaire, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and ambassador to Great Britain under Franklin Roosevelt. In 1936, Kennedy entered Harvard University and graduated four years later. In 1941, shortly before the U.S. entered World War II, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy. While on active duty in the Pacific in 1943, PT-109, the boat he commanded, was rammed by a Japanese destroyer off the Solomon Islands. Kennedy performed heroically in rescuing several of his crew, but he aggravated an old back injury and contracted malaria. After recovering Kennedy was discharged from the Navy in early 1945. In 1946, Kennedy ran successfully for a Boston-based seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was then reelected in 1948 and 1950. As a congressman Kennedy backed social legislation that benefited his working-class constituents. Although generally supporting President Truman's foreign policies, he criticized what he considered the administration's weak stand against Communist China. Kennedy continued to advocate a strong, anti-communist foreign policy throughout his career. In 1952, Kennedy ran and won a seat in the Senate. Kennedy was a relatively ineffectual senator. During parts of 1954 and 1955 he was seriously ill with back ailments and was therefore unable to play an important role in government. During his illness Kennedy worked on a book of biographical studies of American political heroes. Published in 1956 under the title Profiles in Courage, it won a Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1957.

"When Kennedy ran for and won the presidency, he was essentially gambling that his health problems would not prevent him from handling the job. By hiding the extent of his ailments he denied voters the chance to decide whether they wanted to share this gamble. It is hard to believe that he could have been nominated, much less elected, if the public had known what we now know about his health." [

For example, there is the simple fact that Kennedy was hospitalized more than three dozen times in his life and given the last rights three times (see below). It will take Dr. Zebra awhile to organize and respond to the information that recently became available in The Atlantic Monthly in late 2002 [ ] and Professor Dallek's book [ ]. It is already clear to me, however, that Professor Dallek has not fully analyzed the implications of Kennedy's illnesses and medications.

Vice President Johnson, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, President Truman, Reverend Clergy, fellow citizens: We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedomsymbolizing an end as well as a beginningsignifying renewal as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forbears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago. The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globethe belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americansborn in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritageand unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

JFK is the subject of one of the most controvercial assasinations of all time, conspiracy therories, motivation and mystery still remain. He stood up to communism, Castro, the Russians, and the American Mafia. The Cuban missile crisis caused him a very stressful 2 weeks as the world watched for possible World War III. John F. Kennedy was the youngest US President ever to take office, as well as the youngest to die when on November 22, 1963 he was killed by an assassin's bullets as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas. Even today, many believe it was a consipracy and there was not just one gunman that killed him. Lee Harve Oswald was due to stand trial when a man by the name of Jack Ruby shot him to death on the way to the court room. Many say this was a coverup as well. Address by President Kennedy at a White House Reception for Latin American Diplomats and Members of Congress, March 13, 1961 PRELIMINARY FORMULATIONS OF THE ALLIANCE FOR PROGRESS' Address by President Kennedy at a White House Reception for Latin American Diplomats and Members of Congress, March 13, 1961 We meet together as firm and ancient friends, united by history and experience and by our determination to advance the values of American civilization. For this new world of ours is not merely an accident of geography. Our continents arc bound together by a common history-the endless exploration of new frontiers. Our nations are the product of a common struggle -the revolt from colonial rule. And our people share a common heritage - the quest for the dignity and the freedom of man. . . . As a citizen of the United States let me be the first to admit that we North Americans have not always grasped the significance of this common mission, just as it is also true that many in your own countries have not fully understood the urgency of the need to lift people from poverty and ignorance and despair. But we must turn from these mistakes-from the failures and the misunderstandings of the past-to a future full of peril but bright with hope. Throughout Latin America-a continent rich in resources and I n the spiritual and cultural achievements of its pecple-millions of men and women suffer the daily degradations of hunger and poverty. They lack decent shelter or protection from disease. Their children are deprived of the education or the jobs which arc the gateway to a better life. .

America's leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality and the plausible with the possible will gain the popular ascendancy with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every world problem. President John F. Kennedy, Remarks Prepared for Delivery at the Trade Mart in Dallas, November 22, 1963 (Never Delivered) On Friday, November 22 President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. During that short time, Kennedy and his young wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy , became immensely popular both at home and abroad.

For many observers, his presidency came to represent the ascendance of youthful idealism in the aftermath of World War II. The promise of this energetic and telegenic leader was not to be fulfilled, as he was assassinated near the end of his third year in office. For many Americans, the public murder of President Kennedy remains one of the most traumatic events in memory countless Americans can remember exactly where they were when they heard that President Kennedy had been shot.
