Chemical Overview
History
Since Kazakhstan did not have an independent history of chemical weapon production, chemical weapon developments on its territory can be considered only one part of the entire history of the Soviet CW program. However, Kazakhstani territory housed the only known CW facility, the Pavlodar plant, which was under construction when the Soviet Union committed itself to abandon its CW program in 1987. However, some unconfirmed reports suggest that Kazakhstan also housed two other former soviet CW-related facilities: a production plant in the city of Zhambul and storage barracks on the Ili River, though complete information on these facilities is not available.
Status
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Kazakhstani government committed itself to convert the Pavlodar plant to a civilian production facility. Since 1994, the facility has been operating under the status of a joint-stock company, in which 90 percent of shares belong to the state, and 10 percent to plant employees. However, due to economic problems the plant has not been successful in producing commercial chemicals. The plant also faces some problems related to final elimination of dual-purpose equipment at the facility.
As of 1999, most of the buildings and infrastructure at the facility were inherited by the Khimprom Joint Venture (a spin-off of the Pavlodar plant), which assumed responsibility to repay the plant's debts and to sell excess equipment and facilities at the site. There is also a significant mercury pollution problem at Pavlodar, which is caused by the mercury catalyst that has been used since 1975 for the production of chlorine and sodium. For the purposes of cleaning up mercury pollution, Kazakhstan received an $8.5 million loan from the French government. Using those funds, as of November 2001, a French company was supposed to conduct a feasibility study and environmental monitoring in the Pavlodar region, and a tender was supposed to be announced for a contractor to implement the work. It is unclear what, if any, action has actually taken place.

Kazakhstan joined most of its Central Asian neighbors in 2001 in offering its support for the U.S.-declared war on terrorism following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. However, in contrast to some of the other so-called frontline states, Kazakhstan was less directly affected by the military operation against the Taliban because of factors including its relative distance from Afghanistan and the absence of a significant militant Islamist presence on its territory. On the economic front, the Tengiz-Novorossisk oil pipeline, which extends from one of the world's largest oil fields in Kazakhstan to a Black Sea port in Russia, was finally operational by the middle of the year.

A prominent opposition leader remained in prison, while another was released under an amnesty widely believed to have been granted in exchange for his renouncing future political activities. Meanwhile, new developments in the so-called Kazakhgate corruption scandal, involving alleged illegal payments from Western oil firms to senior Kazakh officials, including Nazarbayev, took place during the year.

What is happening in Kazakhstan?
By Rob Jones, A-Infos News Service, 22 January 1998. The opposition to the regime is in a very weak position. Notwithstanding an almost blanket ban on strikes and demonstrations, there have been many protests in the last year but with the communication difficulties and general repressive atmosphere most parties and organisations are disorganised and geographically isolated.

Aboriginal peoples are thought to have arrived from Asia thousands of years ago by way of a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. Scottish and Newcastle defending its Russian beer market
The Scotsman reports (26 April 2005) that S&N shareholders will cheer once again on news that, where growth in beer sales is sluggish throughout Western Europe, in Russia, the Ukraine, the Baltic states and Kazakhstan the trend remains sharply upward. Leading the charge is BBH, the S&N joint venture with Carlsberg, described by one City analyst as "the only sexy part of their beer business." Baltic Beverages Holdings holds three of the top six brands in Russia, amounting to 34 per cent of total market share. Since its foundation in 1991, the Baltika brand has intertwined itself with Russia’s newly prosperous lifestyle. Find the full story here Posted by Matthew McKean on April 28, 2005 at 04:56 PM in

A short history of Kazakhstan
In the early days, Kazakhstan was not much more than a number of nomadic empires. Because of the trade along the Silk Road to China, wealth and civilization were established in the south but the northern part remained mainly nomadic until the Russian involvement in the 18 th century. The known history of Kazakhstan starts 6 centuries BC when the power of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia reached beyond the Amu-Darya river (currently the border between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan). While expanding his empire to Central Asia, Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 330 BC. This was the start of increased contact and trade between Europe and this part of Asia. The exact date when silk reached the west from China remains unknown, but the caravan routes through this territoria between the two main civilization centers of the world at that moment became the main routes for trade of this admired fabric and are now known as the Silk Road. In the centuries after the birth of Christ, Turkic and Mongol tribes settled in the area. Islam was introduced by Arabs in the 8 th century. The Mongol tribes led by Genghis Khan invaded the area between 1219 and 1224 and the country became part of his great empire.

The History of the Greek Catholic Church in Kazakhstan
With the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine in 1946 all the bishops and many priests were arrested and sent to concentration camps. After Stalin's death many priests were freed. The majority decided to work in the underground all across the Soviet Union, serving exiled Catholics who had been forbidden to return to Ukraine. This in fact was the beginning of the Greek Catholic Church in Kazakhstan, where thousands of Ukrainians from western Ukraine had been deported since 1939. In the late 1950s many priests ministered on a regular basis, mostly in Karaganda, which had the largest community of exiled Ukrainians. Among those who served were Bishop Oleksandr Khyra, Fr. Oleksey Zarytskyi, Fr. Nikolay Shaban and Fr. Stepan Pryshliak, to mention but a few. At first they had to meet in huts or at parishioners' homes. This did not, however, prevent the priests from serving mass, hearing confessions, baptizing and performing weddings. In 1979 Catholics in Karaganda received permission to build a church. Therefore from 1979 Greek Catholic priests had the opportunity to conduct masses in the Roman Catholic church. In the early 1990s priests from Ukraine started to come to Karaganda. In 1996 the German charitable foundation Renovabis erected a little wooden church at the request of the Greek Catholics. At the end of that same year the Pope appointed Bishop Basil Medvit, of the Order of St. Basil the Great [OSBM], the apostolic visitator for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic communities in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. On Christmas Day 1997 Bishop Medvit conducted his first visitation of the Kazakh communities.
