History of Kazakhstan
Information about Kazakhstan is a large and diverse one. This short introduction briefs you on the history of Kazakhstan, its culture and politics.
Kazakhstan is the largest country of central Asia, stretching from Siberia to the deserts of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and from China to the Caspian Sea. The country covers two time zones and five climatic zones. Its size defines the character of the nation: everything is large in scale, from the wealth of its resources, to the scale of the travel across the country which presents a formidable problem of bringing the Kazakh goods to the main exports markets. Kazakhstan has a rich and long history. The early nomad civilization was registered as early as in the first millennium BC. The rich vast steppe land had been a valuable prize for many invaders, including Atilla the Hun, Genghis Khan and Timur the Lame (Tamerlane) who conquered and ruled the region. It was the Turkic-speaking tribes that developed trade routes including the Silk Road flowing east to west and the Sable Road connecting central Kazakhstan to the Altai and south-west Siberia. Islam was gradually introduced starting from the 11th century. It was only in the late 15th century that the first Kazakh states were formed and a Kazakh people emerged divided into hordes ruled by khans. Russian expansion reached Kazakh lands in the beginning of the 18th century. By the 1850s the entire region was incorporated into the Tsarist Empire and Russian settlers began arriving in large numbers.

Since 1993, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History has been collaborating with the University of North Kazakhstan and the North Kazakhstan History Museum in the investigation of an eneolithic (3600-2300 B.C.) settlement known as Botai. The Botai culture is known by three large sites, the eponymous settlement of Botai, Krasnyi Yar, and Vasilkovka. The site of Botai is located on the Iman-Burluk River, a tributary of the Ishim, in Kokshetav Oblast. The settlement has at least 153 pithouses, but part of the site has been cut away by the steeply eroding river bank. The Carnegie Museum has been involved in excavating one pithouse and one large midden and their surrounds. Dog burial in a small pit adjacent to the house excavated by our team. The economy of the Botai people depended almost solely on horses. Most were probably the wild species

An ancient land of the Kazakhs.
In 1991, new country - the Republic of Kazakhstan - appeared on the geopolitical map of the world. Kazakhstan has a multi-millennia history and culture. One of the central question is the origin of it's native people, Kazakhs, and the development of their statehood, culture, traditions, and relations with other civilisations. If written sourses are examined, it can be concluded that the Kazakh statehood was completely formed by 1470 when sultans Janibek and Girey organised numerous tribes in the south-eastern areas and combined them into a single 'Kazakh' tribe. In the beginning ot the 16th century, when Kasymkhan ruled over these lands, the Kazakh khanate strengthened: its borders were expanded and the khanate included the cities of Turkestan, Otrar, Sairam, Sauran, Sygnak, Suzak and Chimkent which were located on the Syr Darya river. Kazakhs became well-known both in Europe and Asia. The 16th century is a milestone in the Muslim world history. This was the time when a new age began. V. Bartold, an outstanding orientalist, wrote: "In the new history of Islam, the pace of changing dynasties, the general instability of power, and small states where no patriotism could exist came to there opposite - uniting of states which took place there. We see the Muslim empire of Great Mogul in India, then Turkey, Persia...". That was the approximate time when the Kazakh, Bukhar, and Yarken khanates were established in Central Asia. Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Kyrgyzes, and Karakalpaks, all speaking Turkic languages, claimed their rights in the historic arena.

Chronology of significant events
Humans have inhabited the territory of present-day Kazakhstan since the earliest Stone Age.
The early history of Kazakhstan is a shadowy procession of nomad empires, mostly moving in from the east and hedging around with much uncertainty, since they had left few written records or other traces. Around 500 BC the territory of present-day southern Kazakhstan was inhabited by the Saka, nomadic people considered as a part of the vast network of Scythian cultures. One southern Saka tribe, the Massagetes, succeeded in repelling Alexander the Great in the 4 th century BC.

Central Asia's recorded history begins in the 6th century BC, when the Achaemenid Empire of Persia held sway beyond the Amu-Darya River. In 330BC Alexander the Great led his army to victory over the last Achaemenid emperor and by 328 had reached Kabul and the Hindu Kush. The aftermath of Alexander's short-lived Central Asian empire saw an increase in cultural exchange between Europe and Asia. Hellenistic successor states disseminated the aesthetic values of the classical world deep into Asia, while trade bought such goods as the walnut to Europe. No one knows for sure when the miraculously fine, sensuous fabric spun from the cocoon of the Bombyx caterpillar first reached the west from China.
k a z a k h s t a n Even after the secret of sericulture arrived in the Mediterranean world, Chinese silk producers consistently exercised the advantage of centuries of know-how. The demand for this thread saw unprecedented trade upon what became known as the Silk Road - a shifting web of caravan tracks rather than a single road.
For a thousand years after the birth of Christ, Central Asia was the scene of pendulum-like shifts of power between nomadic hordes and the sedentary civilisations of Eurasia's periphery. Horses, rather than silk, had the greatest influence over regional events, since the vast grasslands fed millions of them. Mounted archers were the most potent military force in the region. The Huns, the Western Turks, Arabs and the Chinese all ventured into the region during this period.

Lessons from the Classrooms of Kazakhstan Teaching Reconciliation and Understanding in a Time of Transition Researcher: Carolyn Kissane about Read Mid-term report (PDF, 133 Kb) Project description The project focuses on educational reforms in Kazakhstan - in particular, how Kazakhstan's educational institutions represent the nation's difficult past with the former Soviet Union and now Russia. Kazakhstan's history with Russia has not been easy; there are numerous issues that could foster hostility and further ethnic division within its highly diverse population. At independence, the Kazaks, the dominant ethnic group in Kazakhstan, were for the first time in a position to explore a history that had formerly been denied to them. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, there was concern over the very real possibility that Kazakhstan would become a nationalist state promoting Kazakh identity over ethnic diversity. Potentially this could threaten peace and stability in a country with so many minorities, including a very large Russian community. The project will examine what role history teachers in Kazakhstan can play in ensuring that young people learn history in a reconciliatory rather than divisive manner. It will examine changes in the teaching of history with the implementation of a national educational policy in 1991, at three levels: 1) national discourse; 2) education policy; and 3) the micro-level of the classroom.

Kazakhstan 1945-1991

After World War II, Kazakhstan was the testing ground for Russia's nucleare program, the first nuclear device being exploded at SEMIPALATINSK in 1949. Soon after, BAIKONUR in Kazakhstan became the launching site for Russia's satellite and space program. In a massive program to economically develop unused lands, between 1954 and 1962 an estimated 2 million settlers, mostly ethnic Russians, were settled in Kazakhstan (mainly in the north of the country). In 1962, Kazakhs living on the Chinese side of the border, fleeing drastic reforms, crossed into Kazakhstan.
In 1989 NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV became head of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan; Kazakh was declared national language.
