Region / Country specific information - Kazakhstan
Introduction Geography People Government ... Transnational Issues
Kazakhstan Introduction Top of Page Background: Native Kazakhs, a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated into the region in the 13th century, were rarely united as a single nation. The area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century and Kazakhstan became a Soviet Republic in 1936. During the 1950s and 1960s agricultural "Virgin Lands" program, Soviet citizens were encouraged to help cultivate Kazakhstan's northern pastures. This influx of immigrants (mostly Russians, but also some other deported nationalities) skewed the ethnic mixture and enabled non-Kazakhs to outnumber natives. Independence has caused many of these newcomers to emigrate. Current issues include: developing a cohesive national identity; expanding the development of the country's vast energy resources and exporting them to world markets; and continuing to strengthen relations with neighboring states and other foreign powers.

    School In Bed
Uralsk, Kazakhstan Biology, chemistry, English, geography, Kazakh, literature, mathematics, physics and Russian. Six students of various ages successfully studied many or all of these subjects while battling illnesses including immobilizing headaches, epilepsy, and severe flu. They accomplished the school year with the aid of dedicated tutors and Operation Blessing's Bless-A-Child program.
Depressed, Sana sat in her bed wondering what her fourth grade class was doing. Much had happened in ten weeks since she last attended school. What begun as the flu, had escalated into the 10-year-old girl developing severe complications with her kidneys. Now out of danger, Sana had been released from the hospital to complete the recovery process. Doctors said she could return to school next term, but until then there was allot to catch up on!
After the hospital bills, Zhanna and her husband didn't have any extra money for a teacher to tutor Sana. To add to the problem, School #17's funding recently had been significantly reduced cutting out any hope of adequate tutoring. Even with the cut funding, the school was required by law to provide education for Sana and five other homebound children. Hearing about School #17 dilemma, Operation Blessing's outreach center Emmanuel Mission was able to support this tutoring program through the Bless-A-Child program! Through this help, teachers were able to spend more quality time on the important subjects with the students.

  • HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
From the IVth century to the beginning of the XIIIth century, the territory of Kazakhstan was the seat of the West-Turkic, Tyurgesh, Karluk and Kaganates kingdoms. There were also states formed by the Oquzes, the Karakhanides, the Kimeks and the Kypchaks. These states successively replaced one another until the Mongol invasion. There were prosperous towns, such ancient towns as Taraz, Otrar, Ispijab and Talkhir. They were situated right on the way of the Grand Silk Road which served as a reliable link between the West and the East. The Silk Road connected Japan, Korea and China with Central Asia, Iran, the State of the Selkdzhuks, Rus (ancient Russia), Byzantium, France and Italy. It was through the Grand Silk Road that dancing, painting, architecture and music made their way from one people to another in ancient times. Incidentally, it was the way along which various religions such as Buddhism, Christianity and Islam were propagated. From the VIIIth century, Islam became the predominant religion in the area and subsequently the only faith of the Kazakhtanis. The Kazakh Khanate was shaped out in the middle of the XVth century. Extension of estates, consolidation of statehood and active external policy were pursued by the First Khans, particularly by Kasymkhan in the early XVIth century. However, political discontent between the Hordes, Khans, Sultans and other chieftains weakened the Khanate. As a result, raids by the neighboring Jungar tribes into Kazakh lands became ever more frequent in the early XVIIth century. The major battles of the war with the Jungars occurred between 1723 and 1727.

Kazakhstan lies at the crossroads of ancient civilizations, the intersection of major transportation routes, cultural, economic, social and ideological links between Europe and Asia, between the East and the West. Kazakhstan
Larger than all Western Europe, Kazakhstan is a vast country of steppes and mountains rich in natural beauty. For thousands of years it was also a natural bridge between East and West, with a northern spur of The Silk Road running through parts of southern Kazakhstan. Authorities are now aggressively marketing the country's tourism attractions. These range from winter sports such as skiing and snowmobiling, to warm weather activities like hiking, fishing and hunting, or more relaxed pastimes such as visiting a health spa. Travel to Kazakhstan
People and mountains have always been connected. Mountains bring out people's deepest and strongest feelings. Whether mountains drew people toward them, or were the very cradle of humanity, it is difficult to say. But the fact that mountains are the most nourishing environment for the human soul is indisputable. Having gotten to know them once, the human heart constantly yearns for them...
