Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Kazakhstan Background: Native Kazakhs, a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes who migrated into the region in the 13th century, were rarely united as a single nation. The area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century and Kazakhstan became a Soviet Republic in 1936. During the 1950s and 1960s agricultural "Virgin Lands" program, Soviet citizens were encouraged to help cultivate Kazakhstan's northern pastures. This influx of immigrants (mostly Russians, but also some other deported nationalities) skewed the ethnic mixture and enabled non-Kazakhs to outnumber natives. Independence has caused many of these newcomers to emigrate. Current issues include: developing a cohesive national identity; expanding the development of the country's vast energy resources and exporting them to world markets; achieving a sustainable economic growth outside the oil, gas, and mining sectors; and strengthening relations with neighboring states and other foreign powers. Geography Kazakhstan Location: Central Asia, northwest of China; a small portion west of the Ural River in eastern-most Europe

85. Saudi Aramco World : The Soul Of Kazakhstan
The dominant theme in kazakhstan s geography is not the soaring mountains or plunging valleys, not its rich forests or dappled lakes, not its broad rivers
http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/200303/the.soul.of.kazakhstan.htm
May/June 2003 Volume 54, Number 3 May/June 2003
Volume 54, Number 3 The Soul of Kazakhstan Written by Alma Kunanbay
Photographed by Wayne Eastep National independence begins with the reawakening of ethnic self-awareness within the framework of both local and world culture. Kazakhs, as bearers of the knowledge of their own heritage, are once again entering the arena of world history, and they are worthy of the interest and attention of the world's mainstream cultures. Kazakhs can enter the modern, global cultural conversation as equals. The art and culture of a nomadic society are more than art and culture in their contemporary meanings. Rather, they are the means that assure preservation of the fabric of the society. This sprawling landscape is fantastically diverse. It includes almost every geographic feature known to humankind except an exit to the open sea. Most importantly, this diverse geography determines the country's natural conditions and thereby its economy and culture. The dominant theme in Kazakhstan's geography is not the soaring mountains or plunging valleys, not its rich forests or dappled lakes, not its broad rivers or arid deserts; it is the all-important, all-encompassing steppe. The steppe zone stretches more than 2200 kilometers (1375 mi) from the northern part of the Caspian depression to the foothills of the Altai Mountains. The steppe is at times dusty and dry, at times snow- and ice-covered, then suddenly fragrant and full of the enchanting sounds and colors of spring. The steppe, which at a fleeting glance seems empty, constitutes a truly unique symbiosis of plant, animal and human life. The steppe demands contemplation, feeling and acclimation; then it opens up to you and gives you strength, and does not let you go.

Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Kazakhstan Political Map (1999)
Kazakhstan is one of the 5 Central Asian Republics who gained their independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991. Kazakhstan is the westernmost of these republics and the largest. It is bordered on the North and West by Russia and in the South by Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It shares a border with China in the East and has over 1,000 miles of coastline on the Caspian Sea but no access to the ocean. The climate is similarly diverse, with heavy snow and cold winters in the Eastern mountain area and extremely dry and desert-like conditions in the South and West of the country. Some central areas have a more temperate climate and thus good agricultural land. The country suffers from the effects of the Soviet Era's "Virgin Lands" program, in which land more suitable for grazing was irrigated and forced to produce cotton, wheat and rice. To compensate for the lack of rainfall, huge irrigation projects were built; these have resulted in the drying up of the Aral Sea, and the salinization of much of the land.
