Yurt
The Yurt is the oldest nomadic dwelling that has survived to our modern time. This masterpiece of design and functionality is still used by Kazakh people and is easily transportable by horse or camel. It is fast to set up and dismantle and its outer felt covering does not let rain in but still keeps the home cool summer and warm in winter. Kazakh women set it up in 15 minutes,  but pople who see it the first time can not set yurt even in several hours af hard work.Today, livestock breeders put up Yurts on summer pastures and they can also be seen in many cities during local festivities.
Traditional clothes
Kazakh national clothes have survived almost without change to the present time. Like any folk clothes, they were heavily influenced by the environment of the land around them. In Kazakhstan this was especially the case with the nomadic lifestyle. With extreme weather such as high wind, summer heat and bitter frosts and snow in winter clothing had to be functional. Times have changed however, and you will now see Kazakhs wearing traditional clothes only on national holidays.
Food
Traditional Kazakh food revolves around mutton and horse meat as well as sour-milk products. These foods are closely associated with the nomadic way of life. The main dishes of Kazakh cuisine are cooked mutton and horse (beshbarmak), ku yrdak (fried mutton), horse delicacies (chuzhuk, kazy, zhal, zhaya), sheep's milk and its products (aimak, katyk, kurt, irimshik) and mare's milk (kumys). The introduction of flour to the Kazakh kitchen brought about dishes such as kuimak, kattama and oima - flat puff cakes fried in oil then covered in cream. No Kazakh feast is considered complete without strong and tasty tea.

Thoughts before the restart
Johan Bruyneel, the Discovery Channel sports director, had some interesting thoughts about Armstrong today. Among them (some of which will be in tomorrow's story) is that he wonders how Lance will satisfy his natural competitive instinct next year. It's a good question. Only Michael Jordan, among athletes I've encountered, has wanted not only to win but to compete as much as Lance. Denis, I disagree a little about it being a European thing about being satisfied to finish second. Vinokourov seems very dissatisfied with not besting Lance. He seemed angry about it today. Ullrich, on the other hand, said he would just be happy to finish on the podium. Jan's yearly routine of gaining lots of weight in the winter and trying to race himself into shape each July seems more a personal laissez-faire attitude than a cultural one. We met three English guys tonight in the nearly-deserted downtown Pau (which seems strange because you can't get a hotel room anywhere). They were camping outside of town and riding their bikes to the stage finishes. Sunday they could only get within a couple of kilometers of the finish. They were here, they said, to see Lance's retirement tour and also said they felt badly that the fans weren't warmer towards Lance. They also noticed, as have I, many, many groups of fans holding both British and American flags and rooting for Lance. Maybe because there are no Brits in the field this year. "Our last rider was a drug cheat," one grumbled, referring to David Millar who was suspended before last year's Tour.

Working Papers on Central Asia and Iran Prepared by Professor Iraj Bashiri
e-mail: bashi001@umn.edu
web: bashiris.com Central Asia Iran Tajikistan Update ... Tajikistan in the 20th Century
Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."

Kazakhstan or Kazakstan
Kazakstan Culture Before the Russian conquest, the Kazaks had a well-articulated culture based on their nomadic pastoral economy. Although Islam was introduced to most of the Kazaks in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the religion was not fully assimilated until much later. As a result, it coexisted with earlier elements of shamanistic and animistic beliefs. Traditional Kazak belief held that separate spirits inhabited and animated the earth, sky, water, and fire, as well as domestic animals. To this day, particularly honored guests in rural settings are treated to a feast of freshly killed lamb. Such guests are sometimes asked to bless the lamb and to ask its spirit for permission to partake of its flesh. Besides lamb, many other traditional foods retain symbolic value in Kazak culture. Because animal husbandry was central to the Kazaks' traditional lifestyle, most of their nomadic practices and customs relate in some way to livestock. Traditional curses and blessings invoked disease or fecundity among animals, and good manners required that a person ask first about the health of a man's livestock when greeting him and only afterward inquire about the human aspects of his life. The traditional Kazak dwelling is the yurt, a tent consisting of a flexible framework of willow wood covered with varying thicknesses of felt. The open top permits smoke from the central hearth to escape; temperature and draft can be controlled by a flap that increases or decreases the size of the opening. A properly constructed yurt can be cooled in summer and warmed in winter, and it can be disassembled or set up in less than an hour. The interior of the yurt has ritual significance; the right side generally is reserved for men and the left for women.

Kazakhstan, Culture
The cultural traditions that are distinctively Kazakh in orientation are grounded in the Kazakhs’ nomadic past. The culture of Kazakhstan also reflects strong Russian and Islamic influences. Due to settlement patterns, Russian culture is predominant in the cities. A significant cultural development occurred during the Soviet period, when a government-mandated genre called socialist realism transformed art and literature into a form of Communist propaganda. Socialist realism directly contradicted Islamic tradition, which prohibits the representation of living things in art. deeper links
