Country Info Kazakhstan Introduction Kazakhstan General Data Kazakhstan Maps Kazakhstan Culture ... Kazakhstan Time and Date Kazakhstan Culture Back to Top Before the Russian conquest, the Kazaks had a well-articulated culture based on their nomadic pastoral economy. Although Islam was introduced to most of the Kazaks in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the religion was not fully assimilated until much later. As a result, it coexisted with earlier elements of shamanistic and animistic beliefs. orthodox Kazak belief held that separate spirits colonised and animated the earth, sky, water, and fire, as well as domestic animals. To this day, particularly honored guests in rural settings are treated to a feast of freshly killed lamb. Such guests are sometimes asked to bless the lamb and to ask its spirit for permission to partake of its flesh. Besides lamb, many other orthodox foods retain symbolic value in Kazak culture. The Russian conquest wreaked havoc on Kazak orthodox culture by making impossible the nomadic pastoralism upon which the culture was based. many individual elements survived the loss of the lifestyle as a whole. Many practices that lost their original meanings are assuming value as symbols of post-Soviet national identity. The collapse of the Soviet system with which so many of the Kazak cultural figures were identified left most of them in awkward positions. Even more damaging has been the total collapse of public interest in most forms of higher culture. Most of the books that Kazakstanis buy are about business, astrology, or sex; the movies they see are nearly all American, Chinese, or Turkish adventure and action films; most concerts feature rock music, not inoften accompanied by erotic dancing; and television provides a diet of old Soviet films and dubbed Mexican soap operas. Kazakstan's cultural elite is suffering the same decline affecting the elites of all the former Soviet republics. Thus, cultural norms are determined predominantly by Kazakstan's increasing access to global mass culture.

The biggest name in Kazak cultural history is Abay Qunanbaev, a 19th century poet and man of letters who launched Kazak as a literary language and translated Russian works into Kazak. Before Abay, Kazakstan literature consisted chiefly of long oral poems. Recitals by bards (aqins) and contests between them known as aitys are still important and popular. Kazakstan's most impressive textiles originate in the country's north-east, near the 'four corners' region of Kazakstan, Russia, China and Mongolia. The mix of influences is apparent in wall carpets and rugs unmatched in their striking colour combinations and the intricacy of their geometric designs. Though Kazaks are Muslim (Sunni) they are not, by and large, strictly so, and Islam is not a major political force. Reasons for this include the Kazakstan's location on the fringe of the Muslim world, and their traditionally nomadic lifestyle, unsuited to central religious authority. Kazak women appear Central Asia's most confident and least restricted, despite the lingering custom of wife-stealing, whereby a man may simply kidnap a woman he wants to marry (often with some collusion, it must be said), leaving her parents with no option but to negotiate the bride-price. Many Kazaks maintain a seminomadic existence, moving with herds, flocks and yurts from their collective farms to summer pastures every year. An affinity with the horse is shown in sports like kökpar, the wild free-for-all ancestor of polo (with a headless goat's carcass instead of a ball) and qyz quu, a boy-girl horse chase - if a boy catches a girl he kisses her, if a girl catches a boy she beats him with her riding whip, all the while both of them riding hell for leather.

The population was approximately 14.8 million. The economy was mainly driven by revenue from the country's vast energy and mineral resources. Agriculture, which represented approximately 10 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), was slower to reform because the Government had not established a legal basis for private ownership of agricultural land. The average monthly wage in the second quarter of the year was $131. During the year, about 29.4 percent of the population lived below the minimum subsistence level, compared with 32 percent in 2001. The official language in Kazakstan is Kazak. It is a turkic-based dialect. Russian is still used in many parts of Kazakstan. In fact, most business transactions take place in Russian. Part of this is because Kazak was outlawed as a language during the Soviet Era. Kazak is missing many up to date technological terms because of this. adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; Archaeological excavations indicate that the south of Kazakhstan was inhabited by man as early as the Palaeolithic Era and tribes were breeding cattle and producing bronzeware by the middle of the second millennium BC. By the beginning of the first millennium BC, the Saks tribe occupied the territory of the steppes, the Savromat tribe the north and west of Kazakhstan, the Kangues the Syr-Daria River area and the Usuns (whose writing, weapons and jewelry have been preserved) the south. Later, the Huns, who bred cattle, made handicrafts and possessed a well-organized army, occupied Kazakhstan. By the fourth century AD, most of the Saks and Usuns had moved west and new individual states began to appear, such as Westturkic Khanate, which was established by Turkish tribes trading on the Silk Road. During the eighth and ninth centuries, the Syr-Daria region and lands around the Aral Mountains were settled by Kimak tribes; the largest and strongest were the Kipchaks, considered the primary ancestors of the present-day Kazakhs. The 10th century was a time of considerable economic, social and cultural progress. Islam was declared the state religion and some outstanding works of literature in the Turkic language were written. The Mongols invaded in the 13th century and Genghis Khan and his army completely destroyed most of the towns and settlements and portioned the land out between his sons. However, by the 15th century, the Kazakh Khanate state was formed, consisting of the remaining descendants of the Saks, Usuns and Kangues of the West Turkic Khanate, and a gradual revival of agriculture, urban culture and trade relations was taking place.

Because animal husbandry was central to the Kazaks' traditional lifestyle, most of their nomadic practices and customs relate in some way to livestock. Traditional curses and blessings invoked disease or fecundity among animals, and good manners required that a person ask first about the health of a man's livestock when greeting him and only afterward inquire about the human aspects of his life.
