Baseball, softball axed from 2012 Olympics
WebPosted Fri, 08 Jul 2005 01:40:30 EDT CBC Sports The International Olympic Committee has slashed baseball and softball from the London 2012 Olympic program. Baseball will not be part of the 2012 London Olympic program. (CP File Photo) Both sports were dropped from the Games following an IOC vote Friday in Singapore. The other current 26 Olympic disciplines will remain part of the London 2012 roster. No new sports were added. Baseball and softball, which remain full medal events at the 2008 Beijing Games, are the first sports to be trimmed from the Olympic roster since polo was cut in 1936. The move chops 16 teams and more than 300 athletes from the Olympics.

Elliotte Friedman says modern penathlon is irrelevant and should be dumped from the Olympics. The Olympic sports menu is in flux.
Each of the 28 sports contested at the Athens Olympics last summer are busy justifying their existence to the International Olympic Committee in anticipation of a July vote, which could determine their appearance at future Games.
Any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics. Golf, rugby, karate, squash and roller sports are waiting to get in, but no sport will be added unless one is voted out.
No sport has been cut from the Summer Olympics since polo in 1936.
Weird sports have almost weaseled their way into the Olympic spotlight (remember suggestions of adding ballroom dancing?). And extreme sports have made a case for future consideration (BMX will debut at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games). What should stay and what should go? Contributors:

Related Category: Sports martial arts, various forms of self-defense, usually weaponless, based on techniques developed in ancient China, India, and Tibet. In modern times they have come into wide use for self-protection, as competitive sports, and for exercise. Jujitsu teaches skills that enable one to overcome a bigger, stronger opponent. A popular style of jujitsu is aikido, which uses wrist, elbow, and shoulder twists and graceful falls; it is noncompetitive and incorporates various spiritual concepts. Judo , a Japanese sport created in 1882, makes use of jujitsu principles. Other popular forms of martial arts include kung fu, karate, and taekwondo, all of which emphasize blows with the feet and the side of the hand, and kendo, in which leather-covered bamboo "swords" are used. Judo and taekwondo are Olympic sports. Capoeira, a dancelike Brazilian discipline whose movements are performed to rhythmic music, is gaining in popularity. The traditional Asian martial arts emphasize allowing ki (cosmic energy; also known as chi) to flow through one's body. This belief in ki connects the martial arts with t'ai chi ch'uan, a meditationlike discipline that emphasizes slow, graceful body movements. The most popular form of individual exercise in China, t'ai chi is often performed publicly in large groups; it has been claimed to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

For 22 minutes, Jahangir Khan and Antonio Espinos were elated. Squash and karate seemed certain additions to the 2012 Olympic Games. There were two vacancies on the London 2012 program after baseball and softball were voted out. Squash and karate had been nominated - above rugby, roller sports and golf - as the replacements. But in an Olympic-size twist, IOC members on Friday handed down a "No" vote to any new sports after 10 rounds of voting. First, all existing 28 Olympic sports were put to a simple "in or out" vote, and only baseball and softball failed to win a majority of support to remain on the program.

Rumors Circulate of Taekwondo Olympic Exclusion
The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it was considering the inclusion of golf, rugby, squash, karate, and inline sports as new Olympic events from 2012. The IOC sent out questionnaires to the 28 Olympic sports federations. It also sent questionnaires to the federations of the five sports under consideration. The questionnaire is known to consist of 33 criteria. The status of the candidates will be decided at the 117th IOC Session, to be held next July in Singapore. With talk of the Japanese traditional martial art of karate being included as an Olympic sport, the international sports world forecasts that the chances of taekwondo being hit with a stray bullet have increased. Currently, the only martial arts included as Olympic sports are judo and taekwondo. Judo, which has been an Olympic sport since the 1964 Tokyo games, stands absolutely no chance of being dropped as an Olympic sport. On the other hand, taekwondo, which was introduced as an Olympic sport for the 2000 Sydney games, has suffered from endless judgment disputes and numerous rumors of being dropped. In fact, China, which hosts the games in 2008, has been lobbying hard to get the Chinese martial art of wushu recognized as an Olympic sport instead of taekwondo. Golf, about which there have been persistent rumors of an Olympic rebirth, is the strongest candidate. Initially, it was the IOC's intention to adopt golf as an Olympic event from 2008, but with top-ranked pros from the PGA tour showing reluctance to participate, the dream experienced a setback. Nations like the U.S. and South Africa that have expressed a desire to hold the 2012 summer games, however, are strongly pushing for golf's inclusion, so the chances have grown greater that golf would rejoin the Olympic family after a 100-year absence since the 1904 St. Loius games. In eight years, we may get a chance to watch our female golf warriors who are dominating the LPGA tour make their way across the Olympic field with Korean flags pinned to their chests.

Karate and squash were briefly chosen to replace baseball and softball before being rejected, meaning the earliest they can now compete is 2016. "For our athletes, it's an insult to talk about 11 years from now. "The whole career of the karate athlete is eight to 10 years, I can't tell my athletes to keep going until 2016 due to five minutes of what happened here." He added: "I can tell you it's very, very bad, so disappointing - how can I explain what happened to my members?" Squash legend Jahangir Khan said: "As a player, one never gives up. We'll try again for 2016. We'll get in one day," he said. "Obviously, I'd have liked to see my game there. But we'll never give up." The claims of rugby sevens, golf and roller skating to be included were also rejected.
