Nishiyama's Calling Goes Beyond Olympic Dreams
By Diane Pucin Hidetaka Nishiyama took his first karate class when he was a 17-year-old college student in Tokyo. The son of a lawyer and a member of a family that had lived in Japan's signature city for 300 years, Nishiyama expected to have a life filled with academic pursuits and business successes. He is 72 now and Nishiyama entertains visitors on a Friday afternoon not in some monstrous Tokyo office tower but in a small storefront Dojo on Olympic Boulevard. A Dojo is a place to learn karate. Nishiyama is described as "one of the great souls of our city," by one of his pupils, Michael Elias. This Dojo, in a neighborhood cluttered with abandoned stores and decorated by graffiti, is a spartan space. There are no trophies on display or gaudy tributes to Sensei Nishiyama, which is the respectful way his students refer to their teacher. On the white wall are two crossed flags, of the United States and Japan, and a drawing of Gichin Funakoshi, who was Nishiyama's Sensei years ago. In the back, Nishiyama's has a tiny office filled with books and unpacked boxes. The boxes have been here for seven years but interior decorating is not of great importance to him.

Unification Update
The previous meeting held on June 18 had ended with an impasse on a number of issues. The meeting of the 6th August was an attempt to negotiate a workable solution that would recognise the valid concerns and wishes of
the greater majority of practitioners that were being expressed by their representative organisations. Inflexibility and an unwillingness to negotiate or recognise certain valid issues by certain members at this meeting resulted in a motion being put forward to dissolve the committee and to pass the issue of unification back to the NZOC.

Think the Ryder Cup was exciting? Golf might have a competition including golfers from all nations in 2012: the Olympics.
LONDON - Golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports are in the running for possible inclusion at the 2012 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be "studied further" as part of a review of the Summer Games' competition schedule. The IOC is assessing the 28 sports on the program of last month's Athens Olympics to determine whether changes should be made. The list of sports will remain the same for the 2008 Beijing Games, with any modifications taking effect in 2012. The IOC will decide on the sports program - and select the 2012 host city - at its session in Singapore in July. IOC president Jacques Rogge repeatedly has said that sports only will be added if others are dropped. The maximum will stay at 28 sports, with around 10,500 athletes.

DanceSport in the Olympics
The state of affairs before 2000
On Sept. 8, 1997 IOC granted the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) status as a recognized federation and a member of the IOC. This does not mean that dancing has been recognzed as a medal sport. It simply means that the IOC has recognized an international body for governing dance-sport. This recognition is granted under Chapter 29 of the IOC Charter. Chapters 30 and 57 of the IOC Charter grant the international federation for a given sport the right to set the technical rules for competitions in that sport. So IDSF gets to set all the rules for DanceSport including styling and technique. The reasons for having an international federation recognized by IOC, even though the sport is not included in the Olympics, are 1) because it is a requirement for ultimately becoming a medal sport and 2) IOC believes strongly in furthering sports on the international level. DanceSport will NOT be a medal sport in Sydney in 2000 or in Athens in 2004. Under chapter 52 of the IOC Charter, sports must receive medal programme inclusion at least 7 years before the games begin, which means the deadline for the IOC Session (members) to vote on inclusion in the 2008 Olympics is September 2001. IDSF is planning on submitting an application for inclusion in 2008. It appears that the biggest hurdle that DanceSport faces is the sport versus art distinction. The IOC recently held a roundtable forum on Sports and Culture. One of the general themes was that art was used to celebrate the sports - and that both art and sport form part of the Olympic Culture. Also, the panel members seemed to say that sports are inherently artisitic, but that which is artistic is not necessarily sporting. A number of commentators tried to define art versus sport, but they seem to have generally failed, and resigned themselves to "I know sport (or art) when I see it."
