Children practicing kendo, Japanese fencing using bamboo swords (Tokyo Metropolitan Government) Many different sports are played in Japan. Traditional martial arts like judo and kendo are popular, as are sports imported from overseas, such as baseball and soccer (football). Many Japanese go to the sea for surfing and scuba diving in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pursuits. MAJOR SPORTS
Baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in Japan. There are 12 professional baseball teams, six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The teams in each league play about 140 games each during the season, at the end of which the two league winners meet in the Japan Series. In recent years, more and more Japanese players have been moving to the United States to play in Major League Baseball. Two of the most famous are Suzuki Ichiro and Matsui Hideki. Amateur baseball is also popular, and many schoolchildren play the game through local Little Leagues or school baseball clubs. The National High-School Baseball Championship, which is held twice a year, is fought out among schools that have survived tough qualifying rounds to represent their prefectures.

Squash Hopes dashed:
The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games.
Unfortunately for us, the IOC Executive Board also decided that as the numbers would be kept to 26, none of the five candidate sports (Squash, Roller Sports, Golf, Karate or Rugby) would be added to the programme of the 2012 Games Damn! Below is the full text of the World Squash press release on the issue: Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment
Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment Ted Wallbutton, Chief Executive of the WSF for fourteen years until his retirement at the beginning of this year, added: "Squash has come from nowhere in Olympic terms to become the first placed sport outside of the programme. It is an amazing achievement and far from failing we should be proud that we won the race, but failed to collect the prize."

But in an Olympic-size twist, IOC members on Friday handed down a "No" vote to any new sports after 10 rounds of voting. First, all existing 28 Olympic sports were put to a simple "in or out" vote, and only baseball and softball failed to win a majority of support to remain on the program. Olympic Inclusion: Roller Sports Gets Mixed Review in Olympic Sports Report Report Cites Low Worldwide Distribution; Lack of Coordination With "TV-Friendly" Teen Skating By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson The Olympic Programme Commission gave roller sports a mixed review in its report of the 28 current and five prospective sports for the 2012 Summer Games. The report, released today by the International Olympic Committee, cites roller sports' relatively low worldwide reach, small media draw and small revenues. It also notes that "teenage skating activities" by which it means aggressive skating or skateboarding "are outside the control of" roller sports' governing body. Another Sports Also Get Dinged But while the report notes the sports' shortcomings, it also points out problems with the other four Olympic contenders: golf, karate, rugby and squash. It notes that some of the best golfers in the world might choose to skip the Olympics. Why? Because the Olympics would interfere with their lucrative PGA tour.

Squash Hopes Raised
By IOC Report
WSF press release
Squash's hopes of making its debut in the 2012 Olympic Games have been given a boost by the publication of the final report from the IOC Olympic Programme Commission that summarises the technical evaluation of the 28 existing Olympic summer sports and the five 'new' sports under consideration. The report is the culmination of intense work by the IOC since the World Squash Federation (WSF) received news in September 2004 that Squash - alongside golf, roller sports, rugby and karate - would be "studied further" with a view to inclusion in the Olympic Games programme for 2012. The report has been distributed to all IOC Members that will vote on the sports programme of the 2012 Olympic Games at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore from 6-9 July. Jacques Rogge, IOC President, has urged all IOC Members to vote "based on the technical merits of a sport as analysed by the experts and noted in this report".
