A 'Brief' History of Taekwondo Taekwondo is 42 years old or 2000 years old, depending on which way you look at it. Specifically, the name and the rules were born in 1957. In reality, the makings of the sport date back to ancient times, with murals of men engaged in unarmed combat found in the ruins of royal Korean tombs almost 2000 years old. The martial arts have remained part of Korean culture throughout the succeeding millennia. They soared to a high point 800 years ago, when a self-defence art called su-bak gained a large following. Evidence even suggests it became a sport in the truest sense, entertaining spectators. Su-bak eventually faded from the public scene, but the martial arts survived as recreation. In the first half of the 20th century, Japanese occupation led to an attempt to wipe out Korean culture, including the country's martial arts, yet they still survived. Then, after World War II ended and Korea was liberated, interest surged again. A group of leading Korean martial artists joined together in the 1950s and tried to unify their various art forms under a single style of hands-and-feet fighting. In 1957, they succeeded and named the unified style Taekwondo, which means "the way of hands and feet". By the early 1960s, Korean soldiers and police were learning the art, and interest was spreading overseas.

history of tae kwon do...
Literally translated, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of kicking and punching." Tae means "to kick" or "to strike with the foot", Kwon means "to punch" or "to strike with the fist", and Do means "art" or "way of life", creative rather than destructive in ones life. Tae Kwon Do is a very effective means of self defense and a great cardiovascular workout for in Tae Kwon Do the legs and its very powerful kicking techniques sets it apart from all other martial arts. However, Tae Kwon Do is more than a physical art but also a philosophical art and a state of mind. Over 2,000 years ago, Tae Kwon Do's earliest records first appeared in the Koguryo kingdom as mural paintings back in about 50 B.C. on the ceilings of the Muyongchong, a royal tomb. These paintings show various unarmed techniques similar to modern day Tae Kwon Do. At the time, Korea was divided into three kingdoms: Silla, which was founded on the Kyongju plain in 57 B.C.; Koguryo, founded in the Yalu River Valley in 37 B.C.; and Paekche, founded in the southwestern area of the Korean peninsula in 18 B.C. In the capital of Silla, Kyongju, carved in the tower wall are two giants facing each other in Tae Kwon Do stances. This indicates that Tae Kwon Do was practiced before these tombs were built in the years A.D. 3 and A.D. 427. The earliest known form of Tae Kwon Do was known as Taek Kyon.

Tuesday, September 26 Drug fight spurs on Russian star
Craig Lord From Craig Lord in Sydney How do you solve a problem like Maria Kisseleva, suspended Russian queen of aquatic ballet? You sue the pharmaceutical company that made a meal out of a banned substance, lobby for leniency and then progress from being stripped of a European title in July to serving a one-month ban in August before becoming Olympic champion in September. Kisseleva tackled the weighty question of her drugs ban with the dexterity she had shown in the water alongside her duet partner Olga Brusnikina as the pair became the first Russians to win an Olympic medal of any hue, let alone the gold, in synchronised swimming. “It was a great shock, a real tragedy,” she said of the moment she was told that ephedrine had been found in the urine sample she produced for drugs testers in Helsinki in July. Drugs among the nose-clip loving ladies of the lake? Unthinkable. "A food supplement was recommended to me by the National Olympic Committee and the pharamaceutical company because they said it would help me to control my weight,” said Kisseleva, not a hint of fat about her. “They did not tell me that it contained a banned substance. We just could not believe it when I was told about the drugs test. We are now going through the courts against this company.”

The history can be as ancient as a thousand or more years ago or something that happened last week. While it will be primarily focused on the arts derived from the Asian countries, we will certainly explore arts from other regions. The central area will be on the history and description of the many arts. We want to share the information each of us has learned to those interested in the terms and origins of styles other then our own and to compare our experiences.

Taekwondo History
The origin of Taekwondo traces back to the three kingdoms of Koguryo (37 BC-668 AD), Paekche (18 BC-600 AD), and Silla (57 BC-936 AD). Archaeological findings (mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagadas of temples of the Silla period, and documents written in the Paekche dynasty) showed fighting stances, skills, and formalized movements similar to today's Tae Kwon Do styles and forms.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the liberation of Korea in 1945 after World War II. Korea wanted to eliminate Japanese influences (in martial arts) and began to unite the various martial arts schools (Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. In 1965, the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen to represent this unified style of Korean martial arts.

The history of Korean martial arts is as old as the land itself and can be traced as far back as the prehistoric era, where primitive weapons made of wood and stone were used for hunting and fighting. As early as 2707 BC, the Korean warlord Chi-Woo, also known as Jaoji, reigned as the ¡°god of war¡± in what is now Mainland China.
Since then, the majority of Koreans migrated and settled in the region of the Korean Peninsula, where there have been more than a thousand recorded instances of foreign invasions. Consequently, the Korean people developed unique martial arts and military strategies in order to defend themselves and their territory.
Most of these Korean martial arts fall into three main groups or branches, namely tribal, Buddhist, and royal court martial arts.

Taekwondo as a Martial Art Taekwondo is a "hard style" of martial arts, meaning it focuses on punches, kicks, and blocks instead of joint locks, grabs, and throws. It is distinctive among hard styles because of its high, powerful, elegant kicks. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and has a long and intricate history.
The first evidence of regularly practiced martial arts in Korea date back to 3 BC. Mural paintings from the Koguryo dynasty show people sparring. In the Silla kingdom during roughly the same time period, Taekkyon (an ancestor of Taekwondo) was a part of Hwarangdo, the education of the male youth of the nobility. During the Koryo period (starting in 918 AD), Subak (another ancestor of Taekwondo) was very popular and was a spectator sport in addition to being a martial art. Subak reached the zenith of its popularity during the reign of King Uijong (1147-1170 AD).
During the Japanese occupation in the first half of the 20th century, martial arts training was forbidden in Korea. Practitioners still continued training in secret, though, preserving the distinctive style of Korean martial arts.
In the years following the liberation of Korea at the end of WWII, a schism developed that would eventually lead to the two major Taekwondo organizations we now see in the world: the International Taekwondo Federation and the World Taekwondo Federation.

Perhaps due to this complex context, Taekwondo's founding organizations have been embroiled in controversy since its postwar consolidation. The first large association formed was called the Korea Taekwondo Association (1961), headed by General Choi, who also instituted the practice of the art in the military, training soldiers as well as members of the air force. As the head of the KTA, Choi was in the process of establishing the International Taekwondo Federation (eventually consolidated in 1966), when he was forced to leave the country for political reasons. In 1973, the first world Taekwondo competition was held in Seoul, South Korea, in the wake of Choiâs absence. At this event, the World Taekwondo Federation was created, with headquarters in Seoul. At present, after numerous attempts, Choiâs ITF (based in Canada) and the WTF, the two most widely recognized Taekwondo organizations, have no plans to unite. The adoption of Taekwondo by the national school curriculum (from elementary to post-secondary levels) as well as by the militaryâs training programs attests to its prominent status in the history of postwar South Korea. The creation of the World Taekwondo Federation and the International Taekwondo Federation has resulted in the dissemination of constitutional rules and regulations to affiliates in various countries. Consequently, the discipline's growth worldwide has resulted in its inclusion in several Olympic games, first as a demonstration sport in 1988 (24th Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea) and as an official Olympic sport in 2000 (27th Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia).

The forms of self-defence are as old as mankind itself, and it would be impossible to trace hand and foot fighting of today back to any single beginning. This is especially so in the case of Tae Kwon Do. Korea is a country with a much varied history, being at the cross roads of Asia. She was periodically invaded by the Mongols, the Manchurians, the Chinese and the Japanese but the indigenous people of what is now known as the Korean Peninsula hung on to their own identity. Background During the fourth century AD there arose three distinct and strong kingdoms in Korea, Koguryo in the north with Silla and Paekche in the south. The small Kaya league nested between the two southern states having strong ties with the Wa State of Japan. Koguryo was to continue its expansion through an elite military class called the Kyondang, at the expense of its southern and northern neighbours until it reached its peak in the 5th Century AD, covering half of the Korean Peninsula and much of Manchuria. Some tomb paintings indicate a form of hand and foot fighting from this period separate in style to the Chinese martial art of kwonbop, introduced around 520AD and made popular in Korea between 1147 and 1170.

Origins of Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do
and MK Tae Kwon Do

Development in the Early Years The arts of Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do can be traced back to the period when Korea was divided into three kingdoms. The Silla Dynasty was founded in 57 BC in the southeast peninsula.
The Koguryo Dynasty was founded in 37 BC in northern Korea.
The Paekche Dynasty , the third kingdom, was founded in 18 BC.
In 668 AD the Silla Dynasty united the three kingdoms. Evidence of the use of martial arts in warfare is found in the many mural paintings, ruins, and remains which deict the battles of the era. One of the most powerful forces behind the development of Tang Soo Do was a group of young aristocrats called "Hwa Rang Dan" (means 'Flower Hand'). These warriors were instrumental in unifying the Korean peninsula for the Silla Dynasty and in spreading the positive influence of the disciplined life of the martial artist. Most Korean martial arts trace their spiritual and technical heritage to this group. The names of some martial arts such as Hwa Rang Do or Hwa Soo Do, still reflect their origin. Medieval Development The warlord Wang Kun ultimately overthrew the united Silla Dynasty in 918 AD. The new Dynasty, "Koryo", lasted for 475 years (918 AD - 1392 AD). In 1392, the Yi Dynasty succeeded the Koryo Dynasty. The Yi Dynasty remained intact for 500 years. During the thousand-year period of the Koryo and the Yi Dynasties, Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do was practiced with increasing popularity in the military and among the general public. During this period, Korean martial arts were refered to by several names, including Kwon Bop, Tae Kyun, Soo Bahk and Tang Soo.
