ROBINA SUWOL, 25.07.2005 20:41 AB 405 California law allows pesticide products that do not have full registration and outstanding data requirements to be applied on school sites. This glaring oversight in the law may expose school children, teachers and other members of the public to unknown health risks. Pesticides contain toxic substances, many of which have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment and, in particular, have a developmental effect on children. Nestled among giant oak trees on the corner of 52nd and Oak streets, in the center of Kansas City and at the center of the nation, is the home of the UMKC School of Law, part of an urban university in a dynamic and diverse metropolitan area. The School was founded in 1895 by three young lawyers with the assistance of leading members of the Bench and Bar. It merged with the University of Kansas City in 1938 and became part of the University of Missouri in 1963. UMKC is the only law school located in Kansas City, the key city of the metroplex and takes advantage of its urban setting through active involvement with the legal, civic and social community surrounding it. Through a cooperative arrangement with the Bloch School of Business Administration, students may simultaneously pursue the J.D. and M.B.A. or M.P.A. degrees. Students interested in taxation may earn both the J.D. and the LL.M. in Taxation on an accelerated basis, generally requiring only one additional semester (or two summer sessions) beyond that required for the J.D. degree. Similarly, students interested in Estate Planning have an accelerated J.D./LL.M. program with an estate planning emphasis. The School's Interdisciplinary urban legal affairs program leading to a Master of Laws in Urban Affairs prepares lawyers for specializing in practice, public service and corporate and financial institutions dealing with metropolitan area problems.

    Not (Just) In Kansas Anymore
    by Eugenie C. Scott
In August of 1999, after months of wrangling, the Kansas State Board of Education passed its state science education standards. Against the recommendations of a committee of 27 scientists and teachers, the board voted to strip from the standards all mention of the Big Bang, the age of the Earth, and any reference to organisms having descended with modification from common ancestors: in other words, evolutionary astronomy, geology, and biology. Teachers were informed that evolution would not be included in the state high-school assessment exams, greatly decreasing the likelihood that the subject would be taught.
The New York Times , the Washington Post , Associated Press, and other national media covered the story widely. Nature The Economist
The degree of public acceptance of evolution is differs sharply from that within the scientific community. In a 1996 survey of a sample selected from American Men and Women of Science , Witham and Larson asked scientists the same Gallup poll questions regularly asked of the general public.1 Whereas in 1997, 47% of Americans answered "agree" to Gallup's question about the special creation of humans in their present form 10,000 years ago, only 5% of scientists did. (I for one was surprised it was that high!) To Gallup's question on agreement whether evolution occurred without God's involvement, 45% of scientists answered affirmatively, but only 9% of nonscientists. Disproving the idea that all evolutionists are atheists, scientists and nonscientists had the same response to the "theistic evolution" question (evolution occurred, but was guided by God): 40% agreed. So while less than half of Americans accept evolution, an overwhelming majority of scientists do.

The First Visit to the Library

    Teachers and Librarians Working Together

    Research Projects

    Introduction
The most wonderful thing about young children is their absolute enthusiasm to learn about everything, everybody, and everywhere. The libraries of the Blue Valley School District in Overland Park, Kansas, strive to foster and continue that love of learning. By providing fascinating enriched environments, the libraries encourage children to continue that enthusiasm and want to learn always. The First Visit to the Library
It starts with the kindergartners on the very first day of school. They are welcomed into the library with a great story and maybe a puppet or someone in costume to pique their interest. A favorite first visit story is I Took My Frog to the Library by Eric Kimmel. The children are allowed to take home books that very first time, always. Often, they are amazed that the books are free, asking how to "rent" them, attesting to their early visits to video stores and sadly, not to public libraries. The library media specialist talks to them about what a library is and asks them what questions they might have. Of course, they have thousands and are told that libraries are the place where they will be able to find answers to most of those questions once they learn to read and use all of the libraries resources. They are always amazed.
