History of the WSC
In 1997 the Blue Valley School District received 33 acres of land along the Blue River through a donation by Clay Blair. As our area of the state becomes more populated, there is less land that can truly be considered a natural wildlife area. This is unfortunate, because there are fewer places where natural plant and animal life are found, and fewer places for students and adults in our community to observe and learn about Kansas wildlife and nature. This problem is being addressed by this property which includes old and new growth forest, prairie, small wetland, wetland forest, wet meadow, multiple streams and riparian corridor. Mr. Blair specified that this land be used for environmental education purposes and for conservation of the area. The Carolyn Ball Blair Wilderness Science Center (WSC), named in memory of Mr. Blair's mother, provides an exciting opportunity for the Blue Valley School District. For the first time we have a place designated for the environmental education for our K-12 students, staff and community. This center will directly impact literally every student in the Blue Valley School District over the course of their education. In the 1999-2000 school year, the WSC's first year of operation, over 2,200 students visited and learned at the WSC.

“School decision-makers should carefully compare their premium costs against the extent of coverage in the areas of greatest liability,” he said. “Some policies lack provisions for paying defense costs for defending non-pecuniary claims, or they exclude defense payment in addition to liability limits. Policies also may not cover outside directors, volunteers, PTAs, PTOs and Booster Clubs.”
Smith said FTJ actively works to keep insurance rates low. Our experts in school law normally settle a high percentage of claims within the first year, thereby lowering costs and incurring less negative publicity for school boards and their respective districts.

by Charlene K. Haar, EPI President Hardly a week goes by without another article encouraging parental involvement in education accompanied by a poll showing the benefits of having parents active in their child's education. Busy parents have long been engaged in volunteer work within classrooms, extra-curricular activities, on school playgrounds, and at home. Today, however, parents who are contributing more time and money feel like they are resources to be tapped rather than major stakeholders in the system. Parents are turning to traditional parent-teacher groups for help. The question is: What kind of help can they expect? The century old National Congress of Parents and Teachers (PTA), has been a long-time proponent of parental involvement. The PTA has local affiliates in slightly over one-fifth of the K-12 schools in the United States. In Florida, about 26 percent of the schools have PTAs. However, all is not well with the PTA. At the PTA's national convention in Kansas City, Missouri, last June, most states reported no membership increases, while many states reported membership losses. Some states, like Indiana, have seen significant dropout rates. In 1994, the Indiana PTA lost 3,384 members and at least 9,000 members quit in 1996. In my opinion, there are several reasons for this decline.

Study: Charter Schools Not Cheaper
They received more funds than traditional public schools in '03
08:01 AM CDT on Friday, June 3, 2005
By KENT FISCHER / The Dallas Morning News
Charter school advocates for years have said their schools survive on less money per student than regular public schools. Charter leaders have proclaimed the funding gap for so long that it is accepted as fact among educators.
But it's not true, according to a new report commissioned by the Texas Education Agency.
Charter schools receive more money – not less – than traditional public schools on a per-student basis, according to the Texas Center for Educational Research, a nonprofit group that recently released its seventh evaluation of Texas charter schools.
According to the report, the average charter school received $8,045 for each child it enrolled in 2003. Regular public schools received $8,028. The figures include state and federal aid, grants, donations and local taxes.

The power of the niche: His company's expanding thanks to success in its marketing strategy. Photo: W. Marc Bernsau Fast-growing parent-group publisher/service provider expands focus Sean McFadden Journal Staff WRENTHAM Tim Sullivan set out to establish a company focusing on an overlooked segment of the parent-group population, and wound up with a lesson in the power of niche marketing. In 1999, the former teacher and fund-raising consultant launched PTO Today Inc., a Wrentham-based magazine and service provider, in an attempt to give voice to a community that he says has often flown under the radar screen PTOs (the umbrella term for parent-teacher organizations), which he says account for about 75 percent of all parent groups nationally, but lack the brand recognition of the 100-year-old PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

There are more AIE policy committees and task forces than ever before. This is also an exciting time, with new resources and increased attention to the arts as a catalyst for improving the country's schools. Doug Herbert, Director of the Arts In Education Program at the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), begins this Monograph with a guided tour of the national arts education scene. He describes the initiatives and partnerships that are shaping the policy and agenda for the arts in our children's education. He brings into focus the current momentum for supporting the arts as essential to education reform. Monograph profiles five communities that are making the arts central in their local schools. Schools, together with local arts agencies and arts organizations, are transforming teaching and learning, and redefining the role of the arts community in education, with a variety of funding and partnership strategies. These local initiatives are described in the second part of the
