    How the Democrats Lost Kansas
    By Thomas Frank
Mr. Frank was born and raised in the suburbs of Kansas City. He is editor of The Baffler magazine and the author of One Market Under God , a study of "New Economy" thinking, and The Conquest of Cool , an examination of the roots of corporate hipsterism. This piece is adapted from his new book, What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America That our politics have been shifting rightward for more than thirty years is a generally acknowledged fact of American life. That this rightward movement has largely been accomplished by working-class voters whose lives have been materially worsened by the conservative policies they have supported is a less comfortable fact, one we have trouble talking about in a straightforward manner. And yet the backlash is there, whenever we care to look, from the "hardhats" of the 1960s to the "Reagan Democrats" of the 1980s to today's mad-as-hell "red states." You can see the paradox first-hand on nearly any Main Street in middle America "going out of business" signs side by side with placards supporting George W. Bush.

Wednesday, April 20, 2005 :: infoZine Staff page views KU Alumnus Gives $2 Million for Political Science Professorship Top British political commentator and market research pioneer Sir Robert Worcester has committed a gift of $2 million to establish a distinguished professorship in the University of Kansas Department of Political Science. Lawrence, Kan. - infoZine - Sir Robert's gift to the Kansas University Endowment Association will endow the Sir Robert Worcester Distinguished Professorship in Public Opinion and Survey Research. A portion of the interest earned on the professorship fund will fund a salary stipend and may provide support for professional travel, graduate student researchers, public lectures, equipment or other materials for the faculty member awarded the professorship. Worcester committed the gift to KU Endowment during KU First: Invest in Excellence, but the details of the professorship were only recently finalized. "The changing global scene and increasing public involvement in issues both international and local requires in-depth knowledge of public opinion and the means to harness survey research to inform effective public policy," KU Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway said. "The University of Kansas is uniquely suited to prepare its students for those challenges, and the Worcester distinguished professor will make a significant contribution to that mission."

    MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS
American printers had been circulating news for a century when George Washington took office as president, but the new nation's provincial press faced an uncertain future. "The expectation of failure is connected with the very name of a Magazine," Noah Webster said in the first days of the Republic. Of the more than two hundred papers in 1800, only about a dozen had published during the American Revolution, and not one of the twenty-four dailies was that old. These diverse papers, with names such as Porcupine's Gazette, Huntress, and Live Giraffe, were charged with many sins, but never dullness. The drama of politics was the center of almost every newspaper, but readers expected to be informed about wonders and horrors, too. In 1843, the Illinois Statesman tried to avoid this, saying "If our readers will for the present just have the goodness to imagine a certain due proportion of fires, tornadoes, murders, thefts, robberies and bully fights, from week to week, it will do just as well, for we can assure them they actually take place." The paper lasted less than a year, a lesson ignored by later publishers at their peril. Mass circulation did not become the key to political influence until the middle of the nineteenth century. In the age of Andrew Jackson, powerful editors such as Amos Kendall, Thurlow Weed, and Thomas Ritchie owed their power to their parties, not their subscription lists. It was local editors who inspired voters and made electoral politics work.
