The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps program emphasizes the leadership and management skills required for success in military or civilian careers. Students find that their interaction with faculty improves self- confidence and overall academic performance. Army ROTC prepares students to serve as officers in the U.S. Army, Kansas Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Reserve.
The courses are open to all students. Students, both undergraduate and graduate, with two years remaining at K-State are eligible to pursue an officer commission through Army ROTC. Military science courses are credit-awarding courses and fulfill elective credit requirements in any degree program. Cadets may pursue any curriculum offered by the university.
The military science curriculum consists of the basic course, normally completed during the freshman and sophomore years, and the advanced course, oriented toward the junior and senior years. Texts and other materials required in ROTC courses are provided without cost.

Otis, of the Twentieth United States infantry, was assigned to the command of the post and charged with the work of organizing the school, under a code of regulations similar to that in use at Fortress Monroe. General Orders No. 8, series of 1882, announced the organization of the school, issued certain regulations for its government, prescribed a course of instruction covering organization of troops, tactics, discipline and theoretical instruction. The Spanish-American war caused a suspension of the school for four years, during which time there was a large increase in the army. Elihu Root, secretary of war, in his report for 1901, said: "In the reorganization of the enlarged army about 1,000 new officers have been added from the volunteer force, so that more than one-third of all the officers in the army have been without any opportunity whatever for systematic study of the science of war." He spoke highly of the work accomplished by the school before the war, and recommended its renewal. As a result of his recommendations, General Orders No. 155, of the war department for 1901, directed that "The infantry and cavalry school

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Edith A. Aynes, an Army nurse with roots in Kansas, made a significant contribution to nursing when she wrote a book about the history of military nursing and her wartime experiences. The book From Nightingale to Eagle was written by Aynes and published by Prentice-Hall in 1973. There were 56,000 nurses who volunteered to serve in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) during World War II and Aynes was one of these nurses. Aynes grew up in Rawlins County, Kansas, the granddaughter of a pioneer physician. She graduated from Atwood High School in 1928 and received a diploma from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. With nursing jobs in short supply, Aynes applied to the Army and was ordered to report for duty as a "reserve" nurse at Fitzsimons General Hospital, in Denver, Colorado.
