SALINE COUNTY
SALINE COUNTY (by Judge O.P. Hamilton) In August of 1862, Salina was but a small village of some 10 or 12 houses, constructed mostly of cottonwood poles, and clapboards made from native timber (oak) used for siding, with the exception of a two-story frame building, constructed by Colonel Phillips, on the corner of Santa Fe and Iron avenues. The southwest corner room was at that time and sometime afterwards used as a common hall for various purposes, viz.: Church, Sabbath school, county elections, dancing hall, public lectures, and district or common schools. This term of school had no interruption in its progress, except on the morning of the 16th of September, when the town of Salina was raided quite early in the morning by a band of Texas rangers and horse thieves, who had things pretty much their own way for a few hours. The teacher and a few of the scholars fled to the country for assistance, but were overtaken, and informed they should not in any manner be harmed. This term and two others, with short intervals, were taught by the same teacher, and attended by about the same number of scholars.

SHAWNEE COUNTY
SHAWNEE COUNTY (by Josiah Jordan, county superintendent) The early history of education in Shawnee county cannot be made up from official records; in fact, very little of the early work in the schools of Shawnee county was recorded in any manner, and it is only by a diligent search through old letters, newspapers and miscellaneous documents in possession of old settlers, and owing to the fact that the writer is somewhat of an antediluvian himself, that some information has been gleaned that may be found of interest to the student of educational progress. There is no doubt that the unwritten history of the early 50's would make what Jim Lane used to call "mighty interesting reading." In 1858 and 1859, the tide of immigration to Kansas and Shawnee county swelled proportionately as the echoes of the border war died away. Men came with their families and their goods, and settled down to stay. Shawnee county was soon fairly well settled with a most desirable class of citizens. The schools began to assume a more systematic condition.

37. Governor’s Column:  Keeping Kansas’ Military Presence
first day of office, I have made and kept my commitment to kansas schools . Strong schools are the foundation of any longterm job-creation strategy.
http://www.ksgovernor.org/news/docs/col031204.html
Governor’s Column: Business Leaders Join Education Battle The following is a column by Governor Kathleen Sebelius: Since the first day of office, I have made and kept my commitment to Kansas schools. This year I put forth a strong, viable plan to improve education for every Kansas child, and a reasonable funding plan to support it. I strongly believe that education is intricately tied to increasing jobs and strengthening our economy. I called on the Legislature to take action and step up to support education and the Kansas economy. I have traveled across the state meeting with education supporters—teachers, school, administrators, and parents. Support does not stop there. It reaches past the classroom and into the boardroom. To harness this very important support from the business community, I have formed a Business Education Partnership. I am very encouraged with the members of this group who each bring unique business experience and knowledge. This partnership is a nonpartisan group of business leaders dedicated to strengthening the Kansas economy through continuous improvement in public education. This group is charged with serving as advocates for excellence in our education system and the investments needed to achieve that excellence; educating Kansans about the link between strong schools and a strong economy; developing accountability measures for school district audits; forging stronger connections between education and workforce development; evaluating the economic cost of the performance gap in public schools; and advising me on initiatives to make Kansas schools the best in the nation.

http://www.ksu.edu/history/militaryhistory.htm
T he doctoral program at Kansas State University including a specialization in military history was approved by the state Board of Regents in May 1965. Together with a longer standing and vigorous Master's, the doctoral program has grown deliberately and soundly during the ensuing years, following the faculty's belief that it should not turn out more graduates than there are appropriate positions for them to fill. Regarding all forms of professional historical work as equally valuablemuseum work, official history programs, publishing, as well as university and college teachingKansas State University's military historians have aimed to match the actual
national need for professionals in the field with the real interests of their students. This is the only military history graduate program authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The History Department has consistently sought to meet the varying needs of individual M.A. and Ph.D. students by responsibly adapting the general program to each specific case. The result is that students can develop a personal connection and close working relationship not only with their major professors but also with other members of their committees in major, minor, and supporting fields. At the same time, the students have the chance to bring their expectations and goals into alignment with the emerging opportunities in the historical profession.
In addition to their direct service through traditional teaching and degree programs, K.S.U.'s military historians have been actively involved with various units and bodies within the armed forces and branches of the federal government, providing expertise either on an individual basis or, at times, through institutional agreements. The individual research, writing, and publishing commitments of military history faculty at K.S.U. have extended this commitment to foster public education in the civic interest, as well as to work on national and international professional committees.
