Wynar donates 11,000 volumes to University of Kansas Libraries LAWRENCE, Kansas - In summer 1999 the University of Kansas Libraries received an impressive gift of over 11,000 volumes from the private library of Bohdan S. Wynar of Englewood, Colo. The collection focuses on Ukrainian studies with an emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. The University Libraries have excellent Ukrainian collections, the core of which were built by Michael Palij who retired as Slavic Bibliographer in the early 1980s. The Wynar collection fills the university's gaps in the late Soviet period. Mr. Wynar is the founder and chief executive officer of Libraries Unlimited, a publishing firm specializing in library and information science. Born in Lviv, he came to the United States in 1950 after earning degrees in economics and political science. In 1958 he earned an M.A. in library science from the University of Denver. He has been a professor of library science and was dean of the State University of New York School of Library and Information Science. Mr. Wynar has published extensively in the fields of library science and Ukrainian library history and bibliography. Maria Carlson, director of the Center for Russian and East European Studies, noted that "the donation of Mr. Wynar's collection to the University of Kansas Libraries represents a significant step towards meeting the center's goal of enhancing Ukrainian studies in this country."

Internet filter costs may exceed penalty
Many Kansas libraries still plan to comply with federal requirement The Associated Press Tuesday, July 15, 2003 Kansas City, Mo. Despite that, libraries across the state are making plans for installing the filters following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this month that upheld the Children's Internet Protection Act. advertisement Under the 2001 law, libraries that receive federal funding must install the filters to keep young Internet surfers away from pornography or lose the money. The law says libraries cannot use federal funds to pay for the filtering and must ensure the filters can be quickly and easily turned off for adults who request it. State Librarian Duane Johnson said most libraries would install the filters because they were told to, and the prospect of losing federal funds didn't have much to do with it. "It's a mistake to think the decision will be made on the small amount of money involved," he said. "For many libraries, they're looking at it as a Supreme Court endorsement of a federal law. A lot of boards are looking at this as a matter identified as a law of the land." Others consider the high court's ruling a violation of the First Amendment and will give up federal funds instead of installing filters. The Hays Public Library, for instance, doesn't plan to install the filters anytime soon if ever.

54. Transcript - Carnegie Libraries: Andrew Carnegie & Public Libraries In Kansas
Transcript of television feature on the impact and heritage of Carnegie's donations in the state.
http://ktwu.wuacc.edu/journeys/scripts/1208a.html
Produced by Scott Williams Narrator: Around the turn of the last century, libraries were built in towns of all sizes throughout the United States, using funds provided by millionaire Andrew Carnegie. Many of these buildings are still in use today, not only across the country but across Kansas as well. Roy Bird: We're in the Carnegie room of the original Stockton Public Library. This was the original portion of the library. The upstairs of course was the library portion, lower part was used for other purposes for many years. The facility was requested in May of 1909 and it was dedicated in January, 1911 here in Stockton. It was a community effort with a grant of $5,000 from the Carnegie's library program. They had about 1,400 square feet here and they used that as the public library for the community of Stockton, which served around 1,800 persons from 1911 until the new edition was opened in 1984. Narrator: In his position at the State Library in Topeka, Roy has been called in to libraries across the state as a consultant. Roy: During the last 12 or 13 years I've been at the state libraries' federal project coordinator and until 1997 we had federal funds for public library construction. We consult to a large extent with the Carnegie libraries as we do with all the public libraries in the state. And um, its fascinating to watch how the Carnegie's have developed and to see the importance in a community that a Carnegie library has because in a town such as Stockton, you see, three generations have viewed this building as the public library and this is where they came to acquire their information, their education, their culture, their recreation, this is a part of the communities heritage and its difficult to give that up.
