Dissemination, Access, and Preservation of Scholarly Information: A System in Flux
Ongoing Responses from KU and the KU Libraries
New economic experiments and new technologies are beginning to create a greater diversity of complementary not competing avenues for the dissemination of scholarly work. Institutional repositories such as KU ScholarWorks containing supplementary materials, working papers, and pre-prints extend the options for disseminating scholarly work beyond traditional publication of peer-reviewed articles and books. Open-access journals whose costs are covered through author-fees and other non-subscription revenue are emerging alongside traditional subscription-based journals. The KU Libraries make every effort to acquire the books, journals, and other information resources that faculty and students need for teaching and research. The Libraries work closely with other academic libraries in the state and region to achieve cost savings through shared purchases, and we carefully negotiate licenses for electronic services to protect the academic rights of the community.

I had a most interesting time at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library in Topeka, Kansas, yesterday! In addition to giving a well-received presentation on social technologies (pdf) for the Northeast Kansas Library System, Lots of wifi goodness stories, too (very important for public libraries, that wifi)! The stories she tells are amazing, and we all agreed that this great stuff should get into Flickr ! Albums with ‘objectionable material’ removed from Kansas libraries
The Kansas attorney general has withheld more than 1,600 compact discs from distribution to state libraries because officials determined the albums promote violence or illegal activity, records show.
The albums removed by Attorney General Phill Kline's office were part of 51,000 discs given to Kansas as part of a nationwide settlement to resolve allegations of price fixing.
The CDs included recordings by 25 musicians, including rap artists such as OutKast and Notorious B.I.G., rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Stone Temple Pilots, and even older acts such as Lou Reed and the 1980s experimental group Devo. Story from CNN

  • The Kansas State Historical Society bases its interlibrary loan policies on the guidelines established by the American Library Association's Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States
and the Kansas Interlibrary Loan Code established by the KIC Council and Kansas Interlibrary Loan Board of Directors (KILBD). Borrowing libraries are referred to these resources for additional information. In addition, the following policies are in place for all loans from the collections at the Kansas State Historical Society. Borrowing Library Responsibilites Both the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States and the Kansas Interlibrary Loan Code stipulate that the borrowing libraries are responsible for the safe use and return of ILL items. Borrowing libraries should submit requests on ALA interlibrary loan forms (via mail or fax), or via the KICNET system (KICNET available to Kansas libraries only). At this time we do not accept requests via the OCLC system or via the internet. Borrowing libraries should provide accurate citations to the items requested, including reel numbers. Whenever possible, KSHS staff will make an effort to determine the reel requested, but may be unable to do so if there is inadequate information provided by the requestor. Requests with incomplete citations may be unable to be filled, and may be returned to the requestor for additional information. See examples of commonly requested items later in this document for guidance on citations.
