What Matters in Kansas

The evolution of creationism.
By William Saletan

Listen
to this story on NPR's Day to Day This week, the Kansas State Board of Education will wrap up hearings on "intelligent design," a theistic alternative to the theory of evolution. Scientists have refused to testify, dismissing ID as tarted-up creationism. Newspapers are comparing the hearings to the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Liberals, editorialists, and biologists wonder aloud how people can refuse to see evolution when it's staring them in the face. Maybe they should ask themselves. It's the creationists in Kansas who are evolving. And it's the evolutionists who can't see it. To understand the fight in Kansas, you have to study what evolutionists accuse creationists of neglecting: the historical record. In the Scopes trial, creationists defended a ban on the teaching of evolution. That was the early, authoritarian stage of creationism—the equivalent of Australopithecus , the earliest hominid. Gradually, evolution gained the upper hand. In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled that states couldn't even require equal treatment of evolution and creationism. By 1999, creationists were asking the Kansas board not to rule out their beliefs entirely. This was creationism's more advanced

I. Background:
Kansas still has a misdemeanor sodomy law. No openly LGBT officials, elected or appointed, reside in Kansas. No hate laws. No protection against discrimination. One thing Kansas does have going for it is that those folks at the State Board of Education respond to inquiries succinctly and if the reply isn't what you would refer to as warm, at least it is prompt The American Bar Association (ABA) recommended in 1990 that all state codes on judicial conduct adopt non-discrimination prohibitions that include sexual orientation, which 25 states did, including Kansas. The regular state legislative session runs from Jan-08 to May-06 and the state's Home Page is at URL http://www.accesskansas.org/ and there you can find contact information for the Governor and the Legislature.

Legal woes may shut down Kansas schools
June 16, 2005 TOPEKA, Kan. Still smarting from a fight over evolution, Kansas schools now face an almost unthinkable possibility: They might not reopen in the fall because of a political and legal battle over education funding. The Kansas Supreme Court has ordered legislators to provide millions more in aid to schools by July 1. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has called a special legislative session for June 22 to act on the order. Some Republicans who control the Legislature want to defy the court, arguing it cannot tell them exactly what to spend on anything. Their tough talk has educators and others worried the court will order schools to remain closed until legislators comply. Such orders have been issued or threatened in other states, and a Kansas judge even told the state last year that it could not spend a penny on its schools until legislators fixed the funding system, a decision that would have kept classrooms closed and 445,000 students at home had the Supreme Court not put it on hold. "It truly does seem to me to be the natural consequence," said Dan Biles, an attorney for the State Board of Education.

New education dean wants strong ties with K-12 schools
By Sophia Maines Contact Friday, August 12, 2005 Rick Ginsberg wasn’t looking for a job at Kansas University. But after being recruited for the top seat as dean of the School of Education, he quickly warmed to the opportunity. Ginsberg has been director of Colorado State University’s School of Education. He will earn $160,000 a year at KU when he begins in August. He holds degrees from the University of Chicago and the State University of New York at Albany. He also has worked at the University of South Carolina, University of New Orleans and the City Colleges of Chicago. Ginsberg has written three books and more than 50 articles and chapters in more than two dozen books. His research and writings cover such topics as school reform, learning disabilities, minorities in higher education, administrator training and school law. Improving programs and moving up in the rankings are among Ginsberg’s goals. He said he would continue to develop what already is a very strong teacher preparation program.

When Public Understanding of Science Thwarts Standards-Based Science Education John R. Staver Center for Science Education Kansas State University 1999 President, Association for the Education of Teachers in Science What a strange set of historical circumstances, what odd disconnect between science and society, can explain the paradox that organic evolution – the central operating concept of an entire discipline…– remains such a focus of controversy, even of widespread disbelief, in contemporary America?" (Stephen Jay Gould, 1999, p. 2087). All of us who work in institutions of higher learning know that the three traditional segments of a university’s mission are research, teaching, and service. As a science educator working in the culture of a land grant institution, I have long held that research, teaching, and service must be integrated under the umbrella of a professional mission. The research that we conduct, the teaching that we do, and the service that we perform need to be considered as an integrated entity, one that informs, and is in turn informed by, society. I also know full well that many in the scientific community do not concur with this view. Many scientists focus on the research segment of a university’s mission. They integrate teaching with research only in their doctoral programs, and they leave the practical outcomes and implications of their work to others. I think that such a view can, in part, explain the paradox that Gould cites in the quote from his article in the June 25, 1999 issue of
