Introduction to Kansas - The United States of America " I n 1822, the Santa Fe Trail brought hundreds and hundreds of wagons through Kansas, and as the population grew, Kansas became a state in 1861. Cattle drives and railroads continued to change the face of the state, and Dodge City became home to the largest cattle market in the world, gaining notoriety in the process as the rough and tumbling home to the likes of Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson. Today, cattle, wheat, corn, and soybeans form the base for the agricultural economy." A lot more found here. - illustrated - From Netstate.com - http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/ks_intro.htm

Overview - The Missouri Census Data Center has created a family of related applications that provide access to distilled demographic summaries of a wide array of geographic areas based on the results of the 2000 and 1990 decennial censuses. Each application is comprised of a similar set of software components:
  • A report-generating web application that accepts standardized parameters (mostly geographic codes) and dynamically generates a profile (a report using HTML) based on those specifications. These reports are sent directly to the web browser. In addition to the demographic data, they include a series of hyperlinks to metadata and related applications. These web applications are all written using the SAS(r) software package.
  • A hierarchal system of menu pages
  • The underlying datasets that provide the data being displayed by the applications. These datasets are organized within special directories, and direct access to the data is available via a special web application called

W elcome to Kansas, nicknamed the Sunflower State, but also known as the Jayhawk State, the Midway State, and the Wheat State. This region of plains and prairie is the breadbasket of the country, growing more wheat than any other state in the union. I n 1822, the Santa Fe Trail brought hundreds and hundreds of wagons through Kansas, and as the population grew, Kansas became a state in 1861. Cattle drives and railroads continued to change the face of the state, and Dodge City became home to the largest cattle market in the world, gaining notoriety in the process as the rough and tumbling home to the likes of Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson. Today, cattle, wheat, corn, and soybeans form the base for the agricultural economy. THE NAME: The state of Kansas was named after the river. The Kansas River was named by the French after the Kansas, Omaha, Kaw, Osage and Dakota Sioux Indian word "KaNze" meaning, in the Kansas language "south wind." The state name for Arkansas shares its origins with Kansas.
