By Jeff Arnett At the midpoint of the 20th century, none of baseball's 16 marquee clubs had settled farther than midway across the United States. In fact, by 1950, St. Louis was both the westernmost and southernmost big league city, with the senior Cardinals and junior Browns each sharing Sportsman's Park, near Missouri's bank of the Mississippi River. Moreover, no franchise had pulled up stakes and perched elsewhere in a half-century since 1903, when the original Baltimore Orioles became the New York Highlanders, better known later as the Yankees. In 1953, however, the major league landscape suddenly lurched, commencing a distinct geography lesson as relocation and expansion of teams shaped the "Grand Old Game." Before 1958, when the Giants abandoned New York for San Francisco and the Dodgers left Brooklynites brokenhearted by moving to Los Angeles, there were the oft-overlooked Braves, Browns and Athletics. The hapless Browns, no longer competitive with the more popular Cardinals, moved east 798 miles to Baltimore after 1953's disastrous 54-100 curtain call in St. Louis. Reborn as the Orioles in 1954, their transfer fell between the 1953 relocation of the Boston Braves and the 1955 migration of the Philadelphia Athletics. With the Braves maneuvering 1,050 miles to Milwaukee and the A's shifting 1,118 miles to Kansas City, Major League Baseball's latitude and longitude were more northern and western than ever before.

The new meat geography in rural America Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City - Economic Review Third Quarter 1999 by Drabenstott, Mark Henry, Mark Mitchell, Kristin
Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. The meat industry is an economic powerhouse for rural America-accounting for roughly one of every 16 rural manufacturing jobs. Moreover, this rural powerhouse is adding jobs at a fast clip, with recent growth of 8.5 percent a year versus just 1.2 percent a year for all rural manufacturing industries. Finally, rural America has captured a commanding 52 percent of all meat industry jobs, far above the level of a decade ago. While all these figures are welcome news to rural areas eager to expand employment, geographic shifts under way in the industry raise fresh doubts over which rural communities will land new meat plants. Once concentrated in midwestern urban centers like Chicago, the meat industry is now most often found in rural towns and hamlets-and often far from the Midwest. Poultry processing has moved to the Southeast. Beef packing plants have moved to the Great Plains. And pork packing plants have begun moving out of the Corn Belt to the Southeast and Great Plains, but where they go next is highly uncertain, with the future location of hog production itself very much in question (Drabenstott).

Aerial Photographs of Colorado
University of Colorado, Map Library
Aerial photographs dramatically portray the changing landscape of Colorado: a mountain valley can be seen where there is now a reservoir; changes in the vegetation and ground cover can be traced over the years, and the growth of towns and cities documented. This website provides access to over 1,700 digitized aerial photographs of Colorado taken by the U.S. Forest Service in the years from 1938 to 1947. The photographs can be searched or browsed using a map search or a geographic keyword search. Searches will bring up information and metadata about each photograph and a 150 dpi image that can be downloaded free of charge. (See "Using This Site" for more information.) The photographs available through this web site cover eight counties: Boulder, Clear Creek, Eagle, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, Larimer, and Summit.
Cattle Trails of the West
Colorado Historical Society
The collections of the Colorado Historical Society contain a wealth of primary resources, books, and magazine articles that illustrate the "real life" of the cowboy. Information about various aspects of the cattle trade provides a wider context within which to understand the lives of cowboys and cowgirls, ranchers and their families, businessmen, and townspeople of the West as the cattle moved through.

July 19, 2004 The long layover in Kansas City was necessary to fulfill all the ceremonial and educational responsibilities these men find themselves responsible for. Virtually everywhere they stop, people want to meet with them, ask questions, visit the boats, and look at their equipment. Scott Mandrell, who is playing Lewis, has to give talks and grant interviews all along the route. Their days in Kansas City were fully scheduled. And a few spectators want to go along. Twice in June people offered to join the group and play the role of York, Clark's slave, for a while. One of them was an African visiting the United States. Volunteers should know that it's not all fun and speeches. A certain amount of work has to get done every day on the three boats the reenactors are traveling in. One day the mast of the keelboat was tangled in grapevines hanging from a tree. The only way to cut it free was for someone to climb the mast. Mandrell one day made an oar, from scratch. (Lewis and Clark had to do this periodically as well.)
