Applied to the Ogallala Aquifer under Southwest Kansas M. Driessen, J. Howard

ES 351 : Introduction to Geospatial Analysis

The Ogallala aquifer is only a part of the High Plains aquifer, yet it is the single most important water source of the southwest corner of Kansas. The High Plains aquifer underlies an area of about 45,660 km (174,000 mi ) that extends through parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. The High Plains aquifer system approximates the boundary of the Great Plains physiographic region. The Ogallala aquifer is one of four major formations of the High Plains aquifer system. The water level in the Ogallala aquifer ranges from 15 to 120 meters (50 to 400 feet). Because of its lack of contact with the surface, the water contained in the Ogallala aquifer is very clean, and is used for agricultural, livestock, industrial, and domestic consumption. In 2003, many different studies were done on the portion of the Ogallala aquifer underlying southwest Kansas. One report was investigating the impact of community water systems on the Ogallala aquifer. In this report, the conclusion was that very little was done to monitor the water coming from the Ogallala, due to its relative availability, and the actual impact on the aquifer water level was extremely insignificant when compared to the biggest influence in water level: farming. Much of the former prairie of western Kansas is now irrigated cropland, major crops being corn, wheat and sorghum. Corn is among one of the biggest cash crops of Kansas, and also the one of the many crops raised that requires substantial amounts of water. This has lead to a disturbing trend in the availability.

CRAWFORD COUNTY
No history of this county was prepared by the proper officer. The history of the schools of Pittsburg, one of its largest cities, was written by Supt. C. M. Light. PITTSBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS During the summer of 1877, the first school building was erected in the town, at a cost of $1,200. It was a wooden structure, two stories high, 28 feet by 40 feet, and is now known as the Fifth Street building. In 1884, an eight-room brick building was erected, but was sold and torn down in 1888, and a beautiful 12-room building erected in its stead, known as the Granby building. In 1887, the high-school building was erected, which gave the city eight additional rooms, besides the high-school rooms. In 1891, two four-room brick buildings were erected, so that at the present time the city has 32 schoolrooms, and the board of education is now planning to erect a central high-school building on the site of the old wooden Fifth Street building. Each building is well equipped with all the modern school appliances and illustrative apparatus.

Overview - The Missouri Census Data Center has created a family of related applications that provide access to distilled demographic summaries of a wide array of geographic areas based on the results of the 2000 and 1990 decennial censuses. Each application is comprised of a similar set of software components:
  • A report-generating web application that accepts standardized parameters (mostly geographic codes) and dynamically generates a profile (a report using HTML) based on those specifications. These reports are sent directly to the web browser. In addition to the demographic data, they include a series of hyperlinks to metadata and related applications. These web applications are all written using the SAS(r) software package.
  • A hierarchal system of menu pages
  • The underlying datasets that provide the data being displayed by the applications. These datasets are organized within special directories, and direct access to the data is available via a special web application called

CHAPTER 11
THE GREAT PLAINS AND PRAIRIES
T he historian Walter Prescott Webb, in his book The Great Plains , suggested that the northwest Europeans who settled much of the United States faced three great "environmental encounters"areas where climatic conditions were so unlike those of their home region that the agricultural crops and settlement patterns developed in Europe were inappropriate. The first of these encounters was with the high summer temperatures and humidity levels of the Southeast. The second was the arid Southwest and interior West. The third was the great continuous grasslands located astride the center of the country ( Map 10 Among the problems on the grasslands, average annual precipitation was much less than in the East, although violent storms accompanied by high winds, hail, and tornadoes were common. Blizzards with wintry blasts intensifying the cold drove the snow into immense drifts. The hot, dry winds of summer parched the soil and sometimes carried it away in great billowing clouds of dust. The region's sparse natural water supply would not support tree vegetation except along the stream courses. Many of these streams were small and flowed only intermittently. Eastern farmers, accustomed to a plentiful supply of water for crops and animals, as well as ample wood for building, fencing, and heating, had to adapt to quite different conditions in their attempts to settle the Great Plains.

http://www.areacode-info.com/headline/2000/mo000426.htm
Consider Consumers; Split Area Codes By Geography Date: 04/26/00 22:00
The substantial growth in communication devices has created the need for a new area code in the Kansas City region. The official proposal put forward to deal with this matter is to "overlay" the new area code inside the same boundary of the current 816 area code. But this is not the route that should be followed by the Missouri Public Service Commission.
Instead, the commission should create what's called a "geographic split." The region served by the 816 area code roughly would be divided in two. The 816 prefix would continue to be used in part of the region and the new area code would be used in the other.
Many people would be able to keep the same area code, while others would get the new one. But the split would be clean and would happen in one swift move. In addition, this action would make sense geographically because people in large parts of the Kansas City region would share the same area code.
The overlay plan is favored by NeuStar, which administers telephone numbering systems; it is the simplest way for telephone companies to add area codes.
