Linguistic Geography of the Mainland United States
Traditionally, dialectologists have listed three dialect groups in the United States: Northern, Midland, and Southernalthough some scholars prefer a two-way classification of simply Northern and Southern, and one may also find significant difference on the boundaries of each area. The map shown above represents a synthesis of various independent field studies this century. These are in chronological order: the Linguistic Atlas fieldwork begun under the direction of Hans Kurath in the 1930's; the informal but extensive personal observations of Charles Thomas in the 1940's; the DARE fieldwork of the 1960's under Frederic Cassidy; and the Phonological Atlas fieldwork of William Labov during the 1990's.
Although it may seem that a great amount of data has been collected over a short time span, the shifts in American dialects this century have been rapid enough to outpace the data collection. What appears to be a well-entrenched dialect marker today such as the Northern Cities Shift, may barely appear in earlier studiesaffecting both classification and mapping. Nevertheless, some basic observations on current American linguistic geography can be made.

Understanding the Geography of China:
An Assemblage of Pieces
Essay by Robert W. McColl Understanding the interaction between a natural environment and various human and cultural patterns is an essential aspect of geography. To fully appreciate China's broad geographic and cultural diversity, one needs to identify general characteristics that act as guidelines. The technical term used to describe distinctive areas is "homogeneous regions." Today "fingerprint" carries the same idea, namely some thing or place that is distinctive. Just as fingers share general characteristics, each has a unique "print" or pattern. This same principle can be used to facilitate understanding complex cultures and societies, such as those in China. A distinct geographic print might include the following variables: physical and environmental features, such as climates, soils, topography, and location; historic patterns and their relationship to the natural environment; the economic activities and resources that define the area today. An aid to creating an understanding of the nature of such fingerprints would be tables showing each region's common (yet distinctive) characteristics. An important characteristic is vernacular housing (houses built without architects and that reflect local materials and conditions), but today many people live in apartment buildings, especially in urban areas. Social organization, transportation, and food are other important aspects of a fingerprint.

    Kansas Geography
The Kansas landscape is as varied as the more than 2.5 million people who live here. The Kansas Landscape
The 14th largest state in the country, Kansas has a huge surface area - a total of more than 50 million acres. Look for the eleven different regions on the map:
  • Ozark Plateau Cherokee Lowlands Osage Cuesta Glaciated Region Flint Hills Smoky Hills High Plains Arkansas River Lowlands Red Hills Wellington-McPherson Lowlands

  • Southeast Kansas: A Coal Mining Heritage
You have probably read about the coal mines of West Virginia, but did you know that coal also is mined in Kansas?
Do you know how your town got its name? The names of the cities and town of Kansas, as well as the roads and streets within them, all tell us something about their unique histories.
    The Name Game
Match the names of Kansas towns with their geographical features. A Ride with the Wind
"Everybody thinks Kansas is flat: it's not flat at all," said Jason Cole about his bicycle ride across Kansas last summer. Preserving the Prairie Kansas harbors one of the our country's most precious natural resources - native prairie. The Flint Hills region is one of the few remaining locations in the United States where great stretches of unplowed grassland remain.

    http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/planning/research/data/about/geography.html
ABOUTST. LOUIS: GEOGRAPHY LOCATION The City of St. Louis is located on 61 square miles just south of the "Meeting of the Rivers," where the Missouri and Illinois Rivers join the Mississippi River. The City is at the center of a 12 county, 7,000 square mile metropolitan area that includes approximately 2.5 million people. The area is a relatively short distance by airplane, automobile or train from such other cities as Kansas City (250 miles), Chicago (300 miles) Indianapolis (250 miles) and Memphis (300 miles). PHYSIOGRAPHY GEOLOGY DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS The City of St. Louis is 100% urbanized. However, as a result of abandonment, dereliction and contamination of properties, there are many opportunities for redevelopment of small sites within the city limits. More challenging is combining small sites some publicly-owned by the city's Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) or other agencies, and some privately owned to create substantially sized sites for new residential and industrial development. Office Space: Retail: Traditionally, downtown St. Louis was the premier retail center of the metropolitan area. Although that role has declined, downtown retains a substantial selection of unique shops, as well as two department stores (Dillard's and Famous-Barr) and two enclosed shopping malls (Union Station and St. Louis Centre). Outside downtown, City retail generally consists of corner stores and strip development along major arteries. Significant retail strips include the Central West End shopping and restaurant district along Euclid Avenue, the Grand South Grand area just south of Tower Grove Park, and Cherokee Street with its Hispanic businesses west of Jefferson Ave. and "Antique Row" east of Jefferson Ave. A few major auto-oriented shopping centers are located in the City. They include the Hampton Village Shopping Center at Hampton and Chippewa, Lindell Marketplace at Lindell and Sarah, and City Plaza at Union and Natural Bridge.

geography OF NOWHERE. Lawrence is one of the fastest growing cities in Americaand will soon merged into kansas CityTopeka megalopolis dubbed Kantopence.
    http://www.larryville.com/articles/chamber.htm
By Clark H. Coan POLITICAL AGENDA . The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce is a highly-political organization dedicated to those special interests of developers, bankers, and large corporations, not family-owned businesses. The Chamber’s "party line" is to:
    • Support rampant growth and suburban sprawl at all costs. Make longtime residents pay for the new taxes required to service and build new developments (witness how much property taxes to pay for new schools have risen in recent years). Divert scarce city resources and services from older neighborhoods to new suburban developments. Make taxpayers pay for tax abatements, industrial revenue bonds and other corporate welfare for companies paying below-poverty level wages. Encourage giant chain commercial developments on the outskirts of town at the detriment of locally-owned downtown businesses. Make the "little guy" pay for city services by relying more on the very regressive sales tax instead of the more progressive property tax (which large companies have to pay).
POLITICAL ACTIVITIES With its huge budget, the Chamber is able to have full-time staff lobbying public officials day in day out. They also are effective at political propaganda trying to convince the public that their agenda is the best for the community. Since developers and other economic special interests get their bread buttered from city policies favorable to them, they also devote a considerable amount of time to lobbying.
