Washington, D.C. - infoZine - They don't have any friends, no peers to talk with and don't know anything about the school they're about to enter, the neighborhood they live in, or the community they just moved into. That's the dilemma of hundreds of military-connected students every time their parents move to different assignments around the world. Because of the frequent problematic situations for teenagers, the Military Child Education Coalition created an innovative program called "Student to Student," or S2S, to help solve the problem. Paul Callen, S2S project director, and a team of school counselors, students and school liaison officers featured the program during MCEC's recently completed 7th annual conference here.

Master of Science In Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner Major
The content for the Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum focuses on the knowledge and skills required to educate nurses to provide primary health care to clients and families across the lifespan. The Primary Care core courses include primary care didactic (theory) courses, practice-focused clinical courses, and an intensive preceptorship experience. The curriculum builds upon knowledge and competencies of baccalaureate education and integrates into the Primary Care core courses knowledge and competencies gleaned in graduate core courses required for all advanced practice nurses. The MS degree with a specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum has three major components: the Common Core segment, the Advanced Practice Core segment, and the Primary Care Specialty Core segment. Full time and part-time study are available. For part-time study, students must complete the Common Core courses (Theory 1, Theory 11, Health Care Professionalism, and Health Care Research) and some of the Advanced Practice and Specialty Core courses (Health Promotion, Advanced Pathophysiology, and Applied Drug Therapy) before enrolling in Advanced Health Assessment. Advanced Health Assessment is the gateway course into the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty courses. Once a student begins the assessment course, it is necessary to proceed directly through the Primary Care courses and Research Project to graduation. This ensures that the national certifying exam will be taken as close to the clinical courses as possible.

At the same time, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and biomedical programs expanded at KUMC to form basic and clinical research projects in fetal, neonatal and early developmental problems in children. For four decades the work has expanded. Associated with the intervention mission is a continuing effort to improve state and national service delivery systems so persons with disabilities can continue to move away from living in large, segregated institutions toward inclusive living environments that more closely resemble family life.

Contact: Jody C. Patterson, LMLP - Director Family and Children Community Services (FCCS) is a program that is dedicated to helping children with serious emotional disturbances (SED) live at home and remain involved in the community. This is achieved by assisting youth and their families in accessing the wraparound network of community services that are available in Sedgwick County. FCCS is available to children under 18 years of age (up to 22 in certain circumstances) who have serious emotional and social problems that disrupt community, school and family relationships. These are children at risk for out-of-home placement or psychiatric hospitalization. Children who meet the criteria for serious emotional disturbance can be referred to FCCS by a family member, physician, therapist, psychologist, teacher, school counselor, or other concerned person. The initial screening to determine FCCS eligibility is completed by the referral and intake contact person at FCCS. FCCS also works closely with Crisis Intervention Services to determine whether hospitalization is required. Fees for FCCS services are based on a sliding scale set by the family’s level of earned income. Medicaid and some health insurances are accepted.

The goal of the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) is to prevent lead poisoning in children by eliminating harmful levels of lead in KC by assuring blood lead screening, case management of lead poisoned children, lead hazard control, and education. Resource Description: Follow up of lead poisoned children is a very important aspect of the work done by nurses at the Kansas City Health Department. If a child has been found to have an elevated blood lead level of 10-14mcg/dL, the nurse works closely with the family to teach them and their child how to prevent further lead poisoning. The nurse will try to help the family determine how the lead exposure occured and also suggest ways to eliminate or lessen the lead contamination. These children need to be tested every three months to monitor their lead levels. Letters are sent and phone calls are made to families when follow up and educational support are needed.
The Lead Programs' nurse case managers provide follow up services to children with lead levels at or above 15mcg. The children and their families receive personalized, family centered care until the child's lead level falls within acceptable limits. Interventions consist of home visits, phone calls, and follow up blood lead tests as well as education and consultation with other members of the child's health care team.

Kansas City March of Dimes and Saint Luke’s Hospital chosen to be 1 of 13 NICU Family Support Programs in the United States
13-Mar-04 Kansas City, MO — The anticipation of welcoming a new baby to the family is one of life's most joyful experiences. However, when a baby is born sick or very small, the birth experience can be a challenging one for the family. Babies who are admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) receive highly specialized medical care to increase their chances of surviving and becoming healthy, active children. For parents, the sight of their baby attached to various machines by tubes and wires can leave them feeling overwhelmed and powerless to help. The March of Dimes Greater Kansas Chapter and Saint Luke's Hospital are partners in an exciting new program to support families of babies who are admitted to the NICU. The March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program is designed to complement Saint Luke's commitment to the philosophy of family-centered care. The program will respond to the unique emotional and informational needs of the families of nearly 400 babies each year who spend their first days, weeks, or even months, in the NICU at Saint Luke's. This special program addresses issues that arise during the family's NICU stay, their transition to home, or in the sad event of their baby's death.

Children, Youth and Families At the time of the 2002 Citistates Report , the Kansas City’s urban school districts were seen as being full of potential, but unable to overcome a myriad of social, educational and financial challenges. At the time, the Kansas City, Missouri School District had lost its accreditation, only 61percent of its students were graduating, and only 11percent were scoring at or above the national average on the ACT. Today, in 2004, increased percentages of local urban school students are reading at or above proficiency levels, and there have been significant advances in math test scores at several inner city high schools. As a result of Kansas City, Kansas’s "First Things First" reform program, there are improvements on social issues: Higher attendance rates, increases in family participation in school conferences and increases in graduation rates. In addition, governance in the Kansas City, Missouri School District has improved, as shown by a functioning school board and efforts to improve fiscal responsibility. Despite these recent gains, the quality of education in local urban schools continues to need, and to deserve, direct and sustained attention. The Foundation’s approach to improving the lives of children in the community can be summarized in two words: Education reform. Before children even start school, they need assurance that they will be able to learn once they arrive. Once in public, urban schools, they need to have teachers with the factual knowledge, interpersonal and instructional skills needed to help them learn. During before and after school times, they will need to have access to programs that will help them grow as individuals, and that will provide healthy, safe environments for further recreation and learning.

In 1990, Smith County, Kansas, where Lebanon is located, was a thriving region. By the late 1990s the population had dwindled to 4,500, having suffered a drop of 150% in 100 years. If this trend continued, Smith County and Lebanon would essentially disappear. When Jim Rightner and his wife, Christine, came to town, they planned to retire there, ready for small town life. During his first day in town, Jim decided to change things. Before long it became a perfect model of small town America. Lebanon proved to be a town willing, in part, to accept this man's dream if it meant surviving. As we learn more about his grand plan, we begin to learn more about what drives him, and what's really behind his dream to rebuild Lebanon, Kansas.
Program Credits One Family in a Kansas Town was produced by Steven Lickteig, with production assistance from Rob Hilton. The editor was Gemma Hooley and the sound engineer was Thom Woodward. This program was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional assistance by Mike Horan and Paul Schmidt. Special thanks also to Kim Bancroft, Norman Bemmelmans, Darrell Brogden, Ruth Maddell, Bill Martin, Patricia Priest, Victory Foth Sherry, Melinda Weir, and Laura Wexler. We have an update to this piece. Jim Rightnar died May 18, 2003. His widow, Christeen, and their son, Christian, who is now divorced, still reside in Lebanon. Jim's dream of a revitalized Lebanon has not yet been realized.
