Co-teaching, instructional delivery seen as key
The author: Julie Tollefson is managing editor at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. This article originally appeared in the September 1998 issue of Strategram, a newsletter for SIM teachers. Floyd Hudson, who has devoted the last 30 years to the field of learning disabilities, sees changes on the horizon for special educators. "I am convinced that the future for us is in instructional delivery, not curriculum content," said Hudson, professor of special education in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas. "The other direction we're going to see much more of is co-teaching." Hudson expanded on these two points and others related to the future of special education during an address to members of the International SIM Trainers' Network in July.
Co-teaching
The concept of co-teaching is very familiar to Hudson, who is the originator of one of the oldest and largest inclusion programs in the country. In fact, co-teaching is central to his Class-within-a-Class program. In this program, general education and special education teachers work together in the general education classroom.

Rethinking Staff Development
About the author: Carl Skordahl is director of special education for Osseo Area Schools, Minnesota This article originally appeared in the January 1997 issue of Strategram, a newsletter for SIM teachers. Minnesota school districts, like many districts in other states, are facing serious fiscal limitations. The district I represent not only faces reduced state-level support but also is located in an area that does not have a strong tax base for generating local funds. This fiscal dilemma is occurring in the face of inflation and increased learner needs for those with and without disabilities. Consequently, staff and leadership must address this problem and take steps for its resolution. This article is an attempt to share with you one possible solution for meeting the needs of students and staff despite fiscal limitations. The solution will be presented in the context of the district I represent. The Osseo Area School District is located in a west suburban area of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Osseo Area Schools serve 21,000 students in 20 elementary schools (grades K-6), four junior high schools (grades 7-9), and three senior high schools (grades 10-12). About 11% of the population receives special education services, and 85% to 90% of those students are labeled mildly disabled.

Biosciences Continuing Education: Working to Support Growth in the Biosciences
A top priority is to support KU and the greater Kansas City area in the quest for national prominence in life sciences research. The University of Kansas plays a vital role in this effort through its research in the biosciences and related fields. KU's broad-based basic and applied research in the biological sciences, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, drug-delivery systems, medical sciences, and related research is essential to reaching the area's life science goals. Kansas City seeks to become a national leader in biotechnology by making new discoveries in aging and related diseases, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, and cancer and infectious diseases. KU's research interests parallel these emphasis areas. KU Continuing Education is positioned to play an important role in the life sciences. With ties to natural- and social science-based programs on the Lawrence campus, and nationally accredited programs for health professionals at KU Medical Center, Continuing Education has established relationships with leading bioscience researchers, both in and outside KU.

There are many reasons individuals give for overlooking sexuality education for special education students. They include (1) the students do not need to know anything about sexuality because they will not have sex; (2) they cannot understand the information; (3) they are already excluded from sexuality education classes; and (4) there is no curriculum for them. After several phone calls from the field requesting a curriculum, information, and/or resources for students with disabilities, we at the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) decided to investigate previous state efforts in this area and to determine what the state needed to do in the future.

Kansas Education Curriculum Evolves Away From Creationism
by Jim Geraghty , SpeakOut.com Staff Writer
Thursday, February 15, 2001 Sue Gamble is one of the Kansas State Board of Education who voted to reinstate curriculum about evolution. Two years ago, the Kansas State Board of Education ignited a firestorm of controversy by voting to remove from the state's public school curriculum the theory of evolution as the sole explanation of the origin of man. But in a 7-to-3 vote Wednesday, the board reversed that decision, reinstating evolution as the sole theory and essentially mandating evolution be taught in public schools throughout the state. An omen of the change came last August when voters in a Republican primary defeated two of the members of the school board who had supported the earlier anti-evolution decision. A third conservative board member resigned and moved out of the state. All three of the new board members who replaced those conservatives, Republicans Sue Gamble, Bruce Wyatt, and Carol Rupe voted in favor of the new standards. The anti-evolution standards, crafted by religious conservatives on the previous board, brought Kansas international attention and significant ridicule from scientists and science groups.
