The term “Deaf-Blind” has been spelled in several different ways, i.e., “deaf-blind”, “Deaf-blind”, “Deaf-Blind”, “Deafblind”, “deafblind”, etc. The chosen spelling is often reflective of one’s personal view and/or involvement with deaf-blindness. Regardless however of the term’s “grammatically-correct” English spelling, deaf-blindness refers to the unique condition resulting from the combined effect of the loss of both vision and hearing. Thus, those with a dual-sensory impairment are not deaf and blind nor blind and deaf. They are uniquely “Deaf-Blind”. Home In an effort to meet the reporting requirements of the Federal No Child Left Behind legislation and reduce the data burden on local schools and districts, the Kansas State Department of Education is working to develop a student-level record system, known as Kansas Individual Data on Students, or KIDS. The KIDS system, when fully implemented, will maintain student confidentiality while allowing for more accurate data available in multiple formats in a more timely manner than currently possible. Implementing this system, however, will require a fundamental change in how schools collect and disseminate data.
