@import url(/css/core.css); State and Federal Requirements Search through our directory of State Departments of Education , which offers contact information and Web links to help you find information about licensure, alternative routes to teacher certification, and financial aid. State Department of Education Requirements Although all states must comply with the federal provision of No Child Left Behind, many states have programs for mid-career changers individuals who already have a bachelor's degree—that are alternatives to the traditional route to teacher certification. Just as teacher certification requirements differ from state to state, so do alternative certification program offerings. In the State Departments of Education directory, RNT provides resources developed by the National Center for Alternative Certification: a coded list of alternative certification programs offered in each state, and an alternative licensure key that describes details about the types of programs offered by each state.
As this information about alternative certification is subject to change, you will still want to call for the most up-to-date information. Some states offer this information online and others will mail you a packet about state-approved alternative certification programs and requirements.

The term “Deaf-Blind” has been spelled in several different ways, i.e., “deaf-blind”, “Deaf-blind”, “Deaf-Blind”, “Deafblind”, “deafblind”, etc. The chosen spelling is often reflective of one’s personal view and/or involvement with deaf-blindness. Regardless however of the term’s “grammatically-correct” English spelling, deaf-blindness refers to the unique condition resulting from the combined effect of the loss of both vision and hearing. Thus, those with a dual-sensory impairment are not deaf and blind nor blind and deaf. They are uniquely “Deaf-Blind”. The federal definition for the “Deaf-blind” is: “Deaf-blindness means concomitant hearing and visual impairments, the combination of which causes such severe communication and other developmental and educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for children with deafness or children with blindness.” 34 CFR 300.7 (c) (2)

      • Pilot Progam Implementation Status Home In an effort to meet the reporting requirements of the Federal No Child Left Behind legislation and reduce the data burden on local schools and districts, the Kansas State Department of Education is working to develop a student-level record system, known as Kansas Individual Data on Students, or KIDS. The KIDS system, when fully implemented, will maintain student confidentiality while allowing for more accurate data available in multiple formats in a more timely manner than currently possible. Implementing this system, however, will require a fundamental change in how schools collect and disseminate data. This web page is offered as an avenue for sharing current information on the purpose and progress of the KIDS project, as well as for collecting feedback on the effectiveness of the project and suggestions for improvement. Please refer to this site often and send your comments and questions to the contacts you will find listed here. Project Overview The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) will develop a student-level record system, to be called Kansas Individual Data on Students (KIDS), that contains a randomly generated state identification number for every student attending accredited public or private schools in the state. The goals of KIDS are to reduce data burden on local schools and districts; encourage better policy-making by maintaining a cost effective and reliable method of reporting and accessing accurate and timely educational information among agencies and educational communities; and eliminate the need for manual operations before data can be used. Through the use of the state identifier, KIDS will provide more accurate data, reduce the time needed for data collection, and allow quicker responses to data requests.
