NEW YORK, July 6 Middle and high school students in Kansas City, Kansas ¢â‚¬" where a comprehensive school reform initiative called First Things First was first adopted ¢â‚¬" registered increased rates of student attendance and graduation, reduced student dropout rates, and improved student performance on state tests of reading and mathematics, according to a new study from MDRC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization. First Things First seeks major changes in school structure, instruction, and accountability and governance policies in both middle schools and high schools with large proportions of low-income students. Confirming and expanding on earlier studies, MDRC found that academic gains in Kansas City were sustained over several years and were pervasive across the district's schools. Research results in four districts where First Things First was later replicated ¢â‚¬" Houston, the Riverview Gardens School District in suburban St. Louis, and two districts in Mississippi (Greenville and Shaw) ¢â‚¬" are less certain: It is not yet clear whether these expansion sites, which had operated the initiative for only two or three years at the time of the study, will achieve the impressive findings produced in Kansas City.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. With the onset of recession in early 2001, the U.S. travel and tourism industry fell into its worst slump since World War II. The September 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent tightening of airport restrictions dealt the industry an unprecedented blow. Many travel destinations continued to suffer in 2002 and early 2003 from a declining stock market, sluggish economic recovery, and war in Iraq. Prior to these recent difficulties, however, travel and tourism's role in the national economy had been rising steadily for decades. As in the nation, the travel and tourism industry has become increasingly important in the Tenth Federal Reserve District.1 Indeed, by the late 1990s, the industry contributed more to gross output in the district than either agriculture or oil and gas extraction, the region's defining industries for much of the 20th century. Travel and tourism is especially important in the district's Rocky Mountain states, which are home to popular vacation spots like Yellowstone National Park, Santa Fe, and the Colorado ski resorts, as well as Denver, a top business travel destination.

July 06, 2005 School Reform Initiative Increases Student Achievement in Kansas City, Kansas
Too Early to Tell If Replication of "First Things First" Is Working in Other Districts The study, The Challenge of Scaling Up Educational Reform: Findings and Lessons from First Things First , comes at an important time. Recent political and public focus has centered on low-performing high schools, where many students fail to graduate and where those who do are often unprepared for the challenges of postsecondary education and work. Nearly four years after the passage of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, students, schools, and school districts continue to struggle with meeting high expectations for performance in times of fiscal uncertainty. “First Things First is a complex intervention that seeks to transform both the way schools are structured and how students learn inside those schools,” said Janet Quint, MDRC senior associate and lead author of the study. “From the outset, the Kansas City, Kansas, school district embraced First Things First, committing resources for many years, which helps account for its success.”

Urban E-Government: An Assessment of City Government Websites
by Darrell M. West, Brown University Email: Darrell_West@Brown.edu September, 2001 Table of Contents Executive Summary A Note on Methodology Overview of City E-Government Online Information ... Individual City Profiles Executive Summary E-government refers to the delivery of information and services online through the Internet. Many city governmental units have placed a wide range of materials on the web from publications to databases. In this report, we study the features that are available online at city government websites in the United States. Using a detailed analysis of 1,506 government websites in the 70 largest metropolitan areas, we measure the information and services that are online, chart the variations that exist across cities, and discuss how urban e-government can be improved. In general, we found that cities have made some strides toward placing information and services online. However, there is considerable variation across cities in how much material is on city government websites. Not all cities have made the same progress and a large number of cities need to address problems in the areas of privacy, security, and special needs populations such as the handicapped. We close our report by making several practical suggestions for improving the delivery of government information and services over the Internet. Among the more important findings of the research are:
