Introduction to Kansas - The United States of America " I n 1822, the Santa Fe Trail brought hundreds and hundreds of wagons through Kansas, and as the population grew, Kansas became a state in 1861. Cattle drives and railroads continued to change the face of the state, and Dodge City became home to the largest cattle market in the world, gaining notoriety in the process as the rough and tumbling home to the likes of Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Bat Masterson. Today, cattle, wheat, corn, and soybeans form the base for the agricultural economy." A lot more found here. - illustrated - From Netstate.com - http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/ks_intro.htm

TALES OUT OF SCHOOL
October 1993
THE HISTORIC INDIANS OF KANSAS Michael J. Marchand To study the tribal peoples who lived on and traveled over the land we call Kansas, is to partake in an intellectually expanding adventure which works to erode the possibility of seeing American myths as singular verity. To investigate the history of peoples diverse and distinctive can be entertaining and it can be a moral enterprise. It is to see the images before us as something more, something richer. It can throw a new light upon the background of our mirrored reflections. It is a path to questions and a steadfast means for dismantling premature conclusions about what and where we are. This edition of Tales Out of School invites educators to take students on journeys into the past, to think about the people who stood, and stand, on the banks of the Cimarron, Arkansas, Smoky Hill, Kansas and Republican rivers.

Introduction
Earth science research at Emporia State University under the Kansas NASA EPSCoR
program is directed toward understanding response of forest cover and wetland to climatic events and human impact during the past three decades. This project is part of a larger effort to model changes in rural resources of Kansas, conducted in cooperation with Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. The forest project includes Landsat and IKONOS satellite imagery, climatic records, tree-ring cores from oaks, and ground observations in upland (oak) and bottomland (cottonwood) study forests at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In addition, we are developing techniques in kite aerial photography (KAP) to acquire low-height, large-scale, high-resolution imagery of the forest canopy. The satellite image below depicts the Fort Leavenworth vicinity in 1987, a year that was especially good for tree growth.

By Chuck Munson / InfoShop News - Apr 26, 2005 09:46 Kansas City The sad state of the American labor movement has been the subject of much debate and discussion in recent years, but this weekend workers from around the Midwest gathered to talk about strategies to reverse that situation. The conference, held on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus, brought together workers from Minnesota, Illinois, Arizona, St. Louis, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and the metropolitan Kansas City area. Unions represented by attendees included the UAW, ATU, IWW, NEA, IBEW, the United Transportation Union, PACE, and several others.

Kansas - A State Unit Study This mini unit on KANSAS uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study KANSAS. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about KANSAS and enjoyable for all who are participating. Kansas' State Flag On a navy blue field is a sunflower, the state flower. Also, the state seal and the words "Kansas". In the picture of the state seal are thirty-four stars representing the order of statehood. Above the stars is the motto "To the Stars Through Difficulties". On the seal a sunrise overshadows a farmer plowing a field near his log cabin, a steamboat sailing the Kansas River, a wagontrain heading west and Native Americans hunting bison. Flag adopted 1927. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.
